The root kuha covers getting, taking, collecting, capturing, and obtaining. It is exceptionally useful but morphologically irregular: patient kunin returns to kuha in kinuha and kinukuha, then has contemplated kukunin. Related families select the getter, obtained item, source, photographic target, or successful result.
The core family
All unmarked forms below are (neutral). Memorize each surface series; adding one suffix mechanically to kuha will not produce every standard form.
| Family and function | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Typical frame |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kuhanin is also an accepted dictionary-recorded basic variant of kunin. The compact series kunin–kinuha–kinukuha–kukunin remains extremely frequent and must be learned; accepting kuhanin does not license invented forms such as kinukunin.
Kumuha and kunin
Actor kumuha selects the getter. Patient kunin selects the item. Compare the same person and umbrella:
Kumuha si Nena ng payong sa estante bago lumabas.
Nena took an umbrella from the shelf before going outside. (completed actor voice; neutral)
Nena took the yellow umbrella from the shelf before going outside. (completed patient voice; neutral)
The actor-voice clause selects si Nena and gives the item ng marking. The patient-voice clause selects the identifiable yellow umbrella and marks Nena with ni. Sa estante marks the source in both.
Clients take a number before lining up at the window. (habitual incompleted actor voice; neutral)
I will collect the result from the laboratory on Thursday. (contemplated patient voice; neutral)
Kukuha and kukunin are not long and short versions of one future tense. They belong to different voices and require different markers.
Makuha: obtaining or understanding as a result
The ma- family can profile success, availability, or a result. In frequent nakuha, this meaning is often quite neutral rather than accidental.
Salve obtained the permit after submitting the missing document. (completed result; neutral)
You will be able to get the keys from the guard after two o'clock. (contemplated availability; neutral)
The same family extends to comprehension:
Hindi ko nakuha ang huling bahagi ng paliwanag dahil maingay sa labas.
I did not catch the last part of the explanation because it was noisy outside. (comprehension result; neutral)
This is a conventional extension. It does not mean that every English phrasal use of “get” should be translated with kuha.
Kunan or kuhanan: select a source or photographic target
Reduced kunan and expanded kuhanan are accepted variants. They can select a source from which something is taken or a target that is photographed. The thing removed or the image produced remains an ng phrase.
Dina took one bucket of water from the large tank. (source-selected voice; neutral)
The photographer took a picture of the entire group in front of the museum. (photographic-target voice; neutral)
In the second sentence, ang buong pangkat is the photographed target; ng larawan names what is produced. The frames are related but not identical. The variation is covered under the -an family.
Manguha and distributed collecting
Manguha is an established actor-voice family associated with gathering or taking items, often from several locations or as a repeated activity. Nasal substitution removes the root-initial k after mang-.
The siblings are gathering dry branches for the stove. (incompleted distributed activity; neutral)
This is not simply a more emphatic kumuha. For one specified pickup, kumuha is usually the safer neutral choice; manguha lexicalizes gathering or acquisitive activity.
Having another person retrieve something
Ipakuha keeps the requested item as pivot, adds a causer, and marks the person sent to retrieve it with sa/kay.
Lora had Ben get the extra table before the guests arrived. (completed causative patient voice; neutral)
Lora arranged the retrieval; the sentence does not say that she personally carried the table. The item-selecting causative frame contrasts with pinakuha, which can select the retriever in an appropriate context.
Conversation and fixed uses
Bare noun kuha can mean a take, capture, shot, or manner of capturing. Kuha mo? “Do you get it?” is common (informal), while Nakuha mo ba? is a fuller neutral question.
—Did you get my message? —Yes, but I will not collect the package until tomorrow. (neutral conversation)
The first nakuha means received/understood according to context. The second kukunin describes deliberate future collection of a selected package.
Common Mistakes
Marking the item with ang after actor voice
❌ Kumuha si Aldo ang pulang sobre.
Incorrect — kumuha selects Aldo as pivot, so the item takes ng.
✅ Kumuha si Aldo ng pulang sobre.
Aldo took a red envelope. (actor voice; neutral)
Keeping a si-marked getter with patient voice
❌ Kinuha si Aldo ang sobre sa kabinet.
Incorrect — patient-voice kinuha requires a ni-form getter.
✅ Kinuha ni Aldo ang sobre sa kabinet.
Aldo took the envelope from the cabinet. (patient voice; neutral)
Building the incompleted form from visible kunin
❌ Kinukunin ni Aldo ang mga resibo ngayon.
Incorrect incompleted form — this paradigm restores kuha in kinukuha.
✅ Kinukuha ni Aldo ang mga resibo ngayon.
Aldo is collecting the receipts now. (incompleted patient voice; neutral)
Regularizing the basic form as kuhain
Avoid this as the neutral standard model — use established kunin or kuhanin.
Get the blue umbrella from behind the door. (patient-voice command; neutral)
This guide teaches highly frequent kunin and accepted kuhanin. Regional or analogical kuhain is not used here as the neutral model. See allomorphy after vowels and glides.
Key Takeaways
- Do not derive the irregular patient family mechanically: learn kunin–kinuha–kinukuha–kukunin.
- Match actor kumuha ... ng item with patient kunin ... ang item.
- Label kunan/kuhanan as accepted variants that select a source or photographic target.
- Use makuha for attainment or comprehension and ipakuha when another person is sent to retrieve the selected item.
