Hortative بیا and بیایید

Persian commonly turns the imperative بیا “come” or بیایید “come” into an invitation to act together: بیا برویم “let’s go,” بیایید شروع کنیم “let’s begin.” The first word addresses the listener; the following verb is a first-person plural present subjunctive, because the proposed action includes both speaker and addressee.

This construction is a hortative: it proposes joint action rather than simply ordering “you” to act. English packages that meaning into let’s. Persian makes the invitation structure visible—roughly, “come, may we do this.”

بیا این مشکل را با هم حل کنیم.

biyâ in moshkel râ bâ ham hal konim.

Let's solve this problem together. (one familiar addressee; careful spoken standard)

بیایید پیش از رأی‌گیری همه‌ی گزینه‌ها را بررسی کنیم.

biyâyid pish az ra'y-giri hame-ye gozine-hâ râ barresi konim.

Let's examine all the options before voting. (formal collective proposal)

بیا بعد از شام کمی قدم بزنیم.

biyâ ba'd az shâm kami qadam bezanim.

Let's take a short walk after dinner. (one familiar addressee; friendly proposal)

The second verb has ـیم, not a second-person ending. With a simple verb it normally also has subjunctive بـ: برویم، بخوانیم، بزنیم. With compound کردن, neutral modern Persian commonly omits that prefix: شروع کنیم، صحبت کنیم، بررسی کنیم. The underlying person-and-prefix system is reviewed on Present Subjunctive Formation.

💡
Track two grammatical persons. بیا / بیایید agrees with the person or people being invited; the following ـیم form includes “we”—the speaker plus those addressees—in the proposed action.

Literal “come” versus hortative “let’s”

بیا remains an ordinary motion command when it tells someone to approach. It becomes hortative when it introduces an inclusive first-plural action. The number on the following verb makes the difference especially clear.

بیا اینجا؛ از پشت شیشه صدایت را نمی‌شنوم.

biyâ injâ; az posht-e shishe sedâ-yat râ nemi-shenavam.

Come here; I can't hear you through the glass. (literal singular command)

بیا این نمودار را ببین.

biyâ in nemudâr râ bebin.

Come look at this chart. (two singular directives: come, then look)

بیا این نمودار را با هم ببینیم.

biyâ in nemudâr râ bâ ham bebinim.

Let's look at this chart together. (hortative; first plural ببینیم)

The difference is not merely English translation. In بیا ببین, only the listener is grammatically told to look. In بیا ببینیم, the speaker commits to looking too. The optional phrase با هم makes that inclusive meaning explicit but does not create it; ـیم already does.

Choosing بیا or بیایید

Use بیا with one person addressed as تو. Use بیایید with several listeners or one listener addressed respectfully as شما. In a lecture, meeting, article, or public speech, بیایید ... کنیم is a conventional inclusive appeal (formal or academic), even though nobody is being asked literally to come anywhere.

بیایید میان هزینه‌ی فوری و سود بلندمدت فرق بگذاریم.

biyâyid miyân-e hazine-ye fowri-yo sud-e boland-muddat farq begozârim.

Let us distinguish between immediate cost and long-term benefit. (academic exposition)

بیایید از اول شروع کنیم تا چیزی جا نماند.

biyâyid az avval shoru' konim tâ chizi jâ na-mânad.

Let's start from the beginning so nothing gets left out. (polite or plural standard)

Bare first-plural subjunctive can itself make a suggestion: برویم؟ “Shall we go?” or برویم! “Let’s go!” Adding بیا / بیایید more explicitly recruits the listener and often gives the proposal a warmer or more urging tone. It is not mandatory before every English let’s.

Negative joint proposals

To propose avoiding an action together, keep the invitation marker and use a first-plural negative subjunctive: بیا عجله نکنیم, بیایید فراموش نکنیم. Negative نـ replaces the main verb’s affirmative بـ exactly as elsewhere in the subjunctive system.

بیا عجله نکنیم؛ هنوز نیم ساعت وقت داریم.

biyâ ajale nakonim; hanuz nim sâ'at vaqt dârim.

Let's not rush; we still have half an hour. (familiar joint proposal)

بیایید نتیجه را پیش از تأیید داده‌ها منتشر نکنیم.

biyâyid natije râ pish az ta'yid-e dâde-hâ montasher nakonim.

Let's not publish the result before verifying the data. (formal collective caution)

This is not a negative command directed only at “you.” Compare منتشر نکنید “do not publish it” with بیایید منتشر نکنیم “let’s not publish it.” The first assigns restraint to the addressees; the second presents restraint as a shared decision.

💡
Use the person ending to test inclusiveness: ـید after the main verb means “you do it”; ـیم means “we do it.” The initial بیایید does not change that division of labor.

Social force: invitation, rallying cry, or pressure

The construction sounds collaborative, but it can still exert pressure. بیایید منطقی باشیم “let’s be reasonable” includes the speaker grammatically while often criticizing the listener pragmatically. In public prose, بیایید بپذیریم که... can lead readers toward the writer’s conclusion (formal rhetorical use).

بیایید صادق باشیم؛ این برنامه در یک هفته تمام نمی‌شود.

biyâyid sâdeq bâshim; in barnâme dar yek hafte tamâm nemi-shavad.

Let's be honest: this plan won't be finished in a week. (formal-neutral rhetorical proposal)

بیا امشب درباره‌اش تصمیم نگیریم و فردا دوباره حرف بزنیم.

biyâ emshab darbâre-ash tasmim nagirim-o fardâ do-bâre harf bezanim.

Let's not decide about it tonight; let's talk again tomorrow. (familiar, conciliatory proposal)

Intonation, reasons, and genuine willingness to share the action determine whether the form feels cooperative. The grammar cannot guarantee politeness by itself.

Colloquial Tehran forms

Everyday Tehran Persian (informal, regional: Tehran) normally reduces برویم to بریم and plural/polite بیایید to بیاین. Compound کنیم often stays کنیم, while other surrounding words may also take colloquial shapes.

بیا بریم یه چیزی بخوریم.

biyâ berim ye chizi bekhorim.

Come on, let's go get something to eat. (informal, regional: Tehran)

بیاین اول قیمت‌ها رو مقایسه کنیم، بعد بخریم.

biyâyin avval qeymat-hâ ro moqâyese konim, ba'd bekharim.

Let's compare the prices first, then buy. (informal, regional: Tehran; plural/polite)

In edited prose, write بیایید برویم or omit the invitation marker and use برویم. A hybrid such as formal بیایید followed by strongly colloquial بریم may occur in real speech during register shifting, but it is not the clean model for either standard writing or consistent casual dialogue.

A short exchange

امشب در خانه بمانیم یا بیرون برویم؟

emshab dar khâne bemânim yâ birun beravim?

Shall we stay home tonight or go out? (careful spoken standard)

بیا غذای ساده‌ای درست کنیم و فیلم ببینیم.

biyâ ghazâ-ye sâde-i dorost konim-o film bebinim.

Let's make something simple to eat and watch a film. (familiar proposal)

Common Mistakes

1. Using the infinitive for the joint action

❌ بیا با هم تا میدان رفتن.

Incorrect — the infinitive رفتن has no first-plural person marking and cannot head the joint proposal.

✅ بیا با هم تا میدان برویم.

biyâ bâ ham tâ meydân beravim.

Let's go together as far as the square.

2. Mistaking a second-plural directive for an inclusive proposal

بیایید این موضوع را بررسی کنید is grammatical as two directives to the listeners: “Come and examine this issue.” Because بررسی کنید is second-person plural/polite, however, it does not include the speaker. For an inclusive proposal, the main verb must be first plural:

✅ بیایید این موضوع را مرحله‌به‌مرحله بررسی کنیم.

biyâyid in mowzu' râ marhale-be-marhale barresi konim.

Let's examine this issue step by step.

3. Using indicative می‌ on the proposed action

With a pause, بیا، فردا می‌رویم کتابخانه is grammatical as two clauses: “Come; tomorrow we are going to the library.” The indicative می‌رویم reports a plan, however; it does not form a hortative with بیا. For a joint proposal, use the first-plural subjunctive:

✅ بیا فردا صبح به کتابخانه برویم.

biyâ fardâ sobh be ketâbkhâne beravim.

Let's go to the library tomorrow morning.

4. Confusing بیاید with plural imperative بیایید

❌ دوستان، بیاید برنامه را شروع کنیم.

Incorrect in direct plural address — بیاید is third-singular subjunctive; the plural imperative is بیایید.

✅ دوستان، بیایید برنامه را با معرفی کوتاهی شروع کنیم.

dustân, biyâyid barnâme râ bâ mo'arrefi-ye kutâhi shoru' konim.

Friends, let's begin the program with a brief introduction.

5. Using an affirmative prefix inside a negative proposal

❌ بیا امشب بنکنیمش.

Incorrect — negative نـ replaces affirmative بـ and attaches to کن; the object clitic follows the complete verb.

✅ بیا این کار را امشب انجام ندهیم.

biyâ in kâr râ emshab anjâm nadahim.

Let's not do this tonight.

Key Takeaways

  • بیا / بیایید + first-plural subjunctive invites the addressee to share an action.
  • بیا addresses one familiar person; بیایید addresses several people or one respected person.
  • A following singular or second-plural imperative directs “you”; a following ـیم form creates the inclusive “we.”
  • Negative joint proposals use first-plural negative subjunctive: بیایید عجله نکنیم.
  • Bare برویم؟ / برویم! can already mean “shall we go? / let’s go”; بیا / بیایید adds explicit recruitment and pragmatic warmth or urgency.
