فهمیدن fahmidan: to Understand

فهمیدن means “to understand, comprehend, or realize.” It can describe successful interpretation—understanding a sentence, explanation, joke, or person—or the moment when new information becomes clear: فهمیدم اشتباه کرده‌ام “I realized I had made a mistake.” That transition into understanding separates it from stative دانستن “to know.”

The verb is current in every register. Everyday Tehran speech reduces some personal endings but preserves the stem; formal prose sometimes chooses دریافتن or درک کردن, especially for abstract analysis. Neither alternative makes فهمیدن informal.

Principal parts

FormPersianRomanizationUse
infinitiveفهمیدنfahmidanto understand
past stemفهمیدfahmidفهمیدم “I understood/realized”
present stemفهمfahmمی‌فهمم “I understand”
past participleفهمیدهfahmideفهمیده‌ام “I have understood”
imperativeبفهم / بفهمیدbefahm / befahmidunderstand; often forceful or instructional
negative imperativeنفهم / نفهمیدnafahm / nafahmiddo not understand; rare outside rhetorical contexts

The infinitive minus ـن gives past stem فهمید; present stem فهم drops ـید as well. Because the stem ends in م and the first-person ending is written ـم, فهمم contains two consecutive written م letters. They are pronounced fahm-am, with the short vowel of the ending between them, inside می‌فهمم. The spelling is not می‌فهمیم for “I understand.”

حرف‌هایش را خوب فهمیدم، اما با نتیجه‌گیری‌اش موافق نیستم.

harf-hâ-yash râ khub fahmidam, ammâ bâ natije-giri-ash movâfeq nistam.

I understood what she said well, but I disagree with her conclusion. (neutral standard)

این بخش از قرارداد را نمی‌فهمم.

in bakhsh az qarârdâd râ nemi-fahmam.

I don't understand this part of the contract. (neutral standard)

Core paradigm

Negatives are نمی‌فهمم، نفهمیدم، نفهمیده‌ام، نفهمم. A present negative denies current comprehension; simple past نفهمیدم can report one failed act of comprehension or serve conversationally as “I didn't catch that.”

Unvowelled می‌فهمید has two grammatically distinct but identically pronounced readings: second-person plural/polite present “you understand” and third-person singular past imperfective “he/she understood, used to understand.” Only person and time context distinguish them.

ممکن است کودک منظور این کنایه را نفهمد.

momken ast kudak manzur-e in kenâye râ nafahmad.

The child may not understand the point of this irony. (neutral standard; negative subjunctive)

اسم خیابان را نفهمیدم؛ دوباره می‌گویید؟

esm-e khiyâbân râ nafahmidam; do-bâre mi-guyid?

I didn't catch the street name; would you say it again? (polite careful speech)

Direct objects: language, meaning, and people

A text, utterance, explanation, rule, or meaning can be a direct object; a specific one normally takes را. کسی را فهمیدن means understanding a person's motives, feelings, or behavior—not merely hearing their words. English “understand about” does not require a Persian preposition: the understood content is normally direct.

بعد از چند بار خواندن، منظور نویسنده را فهمیدم.

ba'd az chand bâr khândan, manzur-e nevisande râ fahmidam.

After reading it several times, I understood the author's point. (neutral standard)

می‌فهمم چرا از آن تصمیم ناراحت شدی.

mi-fahmam cherâ az ân tasmim nârâhat shodi.

I understand why that decision upset you. (empathetic, neutral speech)

In the second example, فهمیدن conveys empathy as well as intellectual comprehension. Tone matters: bare فهمیدم can mean a cooperative “got it,” while repeated فهمیدم، فهمیدم may impatiently mean “yes, I heard you.”

💡
Use را with a specific understood item: منظورت را فهمیدم. Do not import English “understand about” as از unless از belongs to another phrase in the sentence.

Realization and factive clauses

When فهمیدن takes a clause with که, it often describes discovering that the proposition is true. In an affirmative assertion, the speaker normally commits to that complement: فهمیدم که در بسته است both reports the realization and presents the door as closed. This is the verb's factive tendency.

وقتی چراغ‌ها خاموش شد، فهمیدیم که فروشگاه بسته است.

vaqti cherâgh-hâ khâmush shod, fahmidim ke forushgâh baste ast.

When the lights went out, we realized that the shop was closed. (neutral narrative)

از لحن پیامش فهمیدم که عجله دارد.

az lahn-e payâm-ash fahmidam ke ajale dârad.

From the tone of her message, I realized that she was in a hurry. (neutral standard)

Negation and questions complicate commitment. نفهمید که جلسه لغو شده can still imply that the meeting really was canceled; only the person's awareness is denied. But آیا درست فهمیدم که...؟ explicitly asks the listener to confirm the interpretation. The larger structure is covered on Finite Complement Clauses with که.

درست فهمیدم که فردا تعطیل هستید؟

dorost fahmidam ke fardâ ta'til hastid?

Did I understand correctly that you're closed tomorrow? (polite neutral)

فهمیدن versus دانستن

دانستن profiles knowledge as a state; فهمیدن profiles interpretation or entry into that state. Compare جواب را می‌دانم “I know the answer” with جوابش را فهمیدم “I understood his/her answer.” Simple past فهمیدم is the ordinary word for “I realized,” while simple دانستم is more formal and narrative in that inchoative meaning.

MeaningNatural PersianWhy

know a personاو را می‌شناسمpersonal familiarity

قاعده را می‌دانستم، ولی دلیلش را تازه فهمیدم.

qâ'ede râ mi-dânestam, vali dalil-ash râ tâze fahmidam.

I knew the rule, but I only just understood its reason. (neutral; state versus new comprehension)

Imperative, causative, and register

Bare بفهم! is grammatically ordinary but pragmatically marked: one cannot always choose to understand instantly, so it often sounds impatient—“get it through your head!” Polite teaching favors سعی کنید بفهمید “try to understand” or a concrete instruction. The causative فهماندن “make someone understand, get a point across” takes the learner or addressee with به and the content as an object or clause.

می‌خواستم به او بفهمانم که این رفتار قابل‌قبول نیست.

mi-khâstam be u befahmânam ke in raftâr qâbel-qabul nist.

I wanted to make him or her understand that this behavior was unacceptable. (neutral standard)

In everyday Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), the common forms are می‌فهمم، می‌فهمی، می‌فهمه، می‌فهمیم، می‌فهمین، می‌فهمن. The first-person form looks like careful standard; third and plural endings identify the colloquial paradigm.

نمی‌فهمم چی می‌گی؛ صدات قطع و وصل می‌شه.

nemi-fahmam chi mi-gi; sedât qat'-o vasl mi-she.

I can't understand what you're saying; your audio keeps cutting out. (informal, regional: Tehran)

💡
Conversational می‌فهمه / می‌فهمن is fully current, but standard prose requires می‌فهمد / می‌فهمند. The stem itself remains فهم in both registers.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping the past stem in the present

❌ من این توضیح را می‌فهمیدم.

Incorrect for current ‘I understand’ — می‌فهمیدم is past imperfective, ‘I used to understand/was understanding.’

✅ حالا توضیح مرحله‌ی آخر را می‌فهمم.

hâlâ towzih-e marhale-ye âkhar râ mi-fahmam.

Now I understand the explanation of the last stage.

2. Adding a preposition to the direct object

❌ از منظور شما را فهمیدم.

Incorrect — the direct object cannot carry both از and را.

✅ منظور اصلی شما را درست فهمیدم.

manzur-e asli-ye shomâ râ dorost fahmidam.

I understood your main point correctly.

3. Using دانستن for active comprehension

❌ صدای تماس واضح نیست و حرفت را نمی‌دانم.

Incorrect for failed speech comprehension — this is not stored factual knowledge.

✅ صدای تماس واضح نیست و حرفت را نمی‌فهمم.

sedâ-ye tamâs vâzeh nist va harf-at râ nemi-fahmam.

The call isn't clear, and I can't understand what you're saying.

4. Writing the imperfective prefix separately

❌ کم‌کم می فهمم مشکل کجاست.

Incorrect standard orthography — می‌ requires a ZWNJ before the verb.

✅ کم‌کم می‌فهمم مشکل از کجاست.

kam-kam mi-fahmam moshkel az kojâ-st.

I'm gradually understanding where the problem comes from.

Key Takeaways

  • Store فهمیدن — فهمید — فهم; the present begins می‌فهمم.
  • Use a direct object for understood content and که for a realized proposition.
  • فهمیدن profiles comprehension or realization; دانستن profiles an existing state of knowledge.
  • Bare بفهم is often forceful, while فهماندن به کسی causatively gets a point across.
  • Tehran speech uses می‌فهمه / می‌فهمن; neutral writing uses می‌فهمد / می‌فهمند.
