This explicitly original A2 paragraph describes one person’s ordinary workday. It brings together the habitual present, clock times, را objects, motion phrases, compound verbs, and coordinated actions. The goal is close reading: every sentence uses grammar already taught in isolation and shows how it works across a connected text.
The paragraph uses neutral written standard that can also be read aloud as careful speech. A Tehran speaker might reduce forms such as میروم to میرم, but the text does not mix those informal spellings into the standard narrative. Review the basic tense on Talking about Daily Routines.
The complete original text
man ruz-hâ-ye kâri sâ'at-e shesh-o nim bidâr mi-shavam. avval panjare râ bâz mi-konam va yek livân âb mi-khoram. ba'd sobhâne mi-khoram va khabar-hâ-ye sobh râ mi-khânam. sâ'at-e haft-o nim az khâne birun mi-ravam va bâ metro be mahal-e kâr mi-rasam. tâ zohr javâb-e imeyl-hâ râ mi-daham va bâ hamkârân-am jalase dâram. zohr nâhâr mi-khorim, ammâ ma'mulâ ziyâd esterâhat nemi-konim. asr be khâne bar-mi-gardam, kami varzesh mi-konam va shâm dorost mi-konam. shab bâ khânevâde-am sohbat mi-konam va hodud-e sâ'at-e yâzdah mi-khâbam.
On workdays I wake up at six thirty. First I open the window and drink a glass of water. Then I eat breakfast and read the morning news. At seven thirty I leave home and take the metro to work. Until noon I answer emails and have meetings with my colleagues. At noon we eat lunch, but we usually do not rest much. In the evening I return home, exercise a little, and make dinner. At night I talk with my family and go to sleep around eleven.
The translation chooses idiomatic English. Persian با مترو به محل کار میرسم literally says “with/by metro I reach the workplace,” but ordinary English prefers “I take the metro to work.” Similarly, جواب ایمیلها را میدهم is structurally “give the answer of the emails,” yet naturally means “answer emails.”
Establishing a recurring time frame
من روزهای کاری ساعت شش و نیم بیدار میشوم.
man ruz-hâ-ye kâri sâ'at-e shesh-o nim bidâr mi-shavam.
On workdays I wake up at six thirty. (habitual present)
روزهای کاری establishes repetition before the first verb. The present indicative میشوم can describe an event that recurs, and the time expression ساعت شش و نیم locates each occurrence. Persian does not need a preposition equivalent to English at before a clock time.
The compound بیدار شدن treats the waking person as the subject entering a state. English uses the simple verb wake up; a word-for-word translation of شدن as become would be grammatical but unnatural here.
روزهای تعطیل معمولا یک ساعت دیرتر بیدار میشوم.
ruz-hâ-ye ta'til ma'mulâ yek sâ'at dirtar bidâr mi-shavam.
On days off, I usually wake up an hour later. (habitual contrast)
معمولا and روزهای تعطیل both favor a habitual reading. The time difference یک ساعت دیرتر appears without an extra preposition.
Ordered actions with اول and بعد
اول پنجره را باز میکنم و یک لیوان آب میخورم.
avval panjare râ bâz mi-konam va yek livân âb mi-khoram.
First I open the window and drink a glass of water. (neutral standard)
اول sets sequence. The known window is specific and takes را. By contrast, یک لیوان آب introduces an amount and normally has no را in this context. The shared subject “I” is stated once; each coordinated verb still carries first-person ـم.
بعد صبحانه میخورم و خبرهای صبح را میخوانم.
ba'd sobhâne mi-khoram va khabar-hâ-ye sobh râ mi-khânam.
Then I eat breakfast and read the morning news. (neutral standard)
صبحانه خوردن is a conventional collocation and does not require an article corresponding to English breakfast. خبرهای صبح is a specific set in the routine and takes را as the object of خواندن.
Motion and destination
ساعت هفت و نیم از خانه بیرون میروم.
sâ'at-e haft-o nim az khâne birun mi-ravam.
At seven thirty I leave home. (habitual present)
The source takes از. بیرون رفتن is the predicate, with the verb in final position. Persian can omit من after the opening sentence because ـم continues to identify the first-person subject.
با مترو به محل کار میرسم.
bâ metro be mahal-e kâr mi-rasam.
I get to work by metro. (neutral standard)
با مترو expresses means, and به محل کار is the endpoint selected by رسیدن. English arrive work cannot be copied: Persian explicitly uses به for the destination.
Workday compounds
تا ظهر جواب ایمیلها را میدهم.
tâ zohr javâb-e imeyl-hâ râ mi-daham.
Until noon I answer emails. (neutral standard)
The whole predicate is جواب دادن, not a literal act of handing over an answer. ایمیلها is linked to جواب by ezafe, and the full definite theme جواب ایمیلها takes را. This illustrates why compound verbs must be learned with their argument pattern.
با همکارانم جلسه دارم.
bâ hamkârân-am jalase dâram.
I have meetings with my colleagues. (neutral workplace language)
جلسه داشتن packages a scheduled work activity. با همکارانم names the other participants. The Persian singular جلسه can describe the recurring activity without copying English plural marking.
Noon and evening coordination
ظهر ناهار میخوریم، اما معمولا زیاد استراحت نمیکنیم.
zohr nâhâr mi-khorim, ammâ ma'mulâ ziyâd esterâhat nemi-konim.
At noon we eat lunch, but we usually do not rest much. (neutral standard)
The shift from میخورم to plural میخوریم signals that colleagues now share lunch. Persian does not have to restate ما. اما marks contrast, and negation attaches before می as the single written form نمیکنیم.
عصر به خانه برمیگردم و کمی ورزش میکنم.
asr be khâne bar-mi-gardam va kami varzesh mi-konam.
In the evening I return home and exercise a little. (neutral standard)
برمیگردم contains the preverb برـ before می. ورزش کردن is another lexical compound; کمی measures the activity rather than serving as an object.
شب شام درست میکنم و با خانوادهام حرف میزنم.
shab shâm dorost mi-konam va bâ khânevâde-am harf mi-zanam.
At night I make dinner and talk with my family. (neutral conversation)
This sentence deliberately uses حرف زدن, a conversational alternative to text-level صحبت کردن. Both are modern; حرف زدن is somewhat more informal, not incorrect.
Common Mistakes
1. Using the progressive for a general routine
⚠️ هر روز ساعت شش دارم بیدار میشوم.
har ruz sâ'at-e shesh dâram bidâr mi-shavam.
Every day at six I am in the middle of waking up. (grammatical words, but the progressive conflicts with the intended general routine)
✅ بیشتر روزها پیش از ساعت هفت بیدار میشوم.
bishtar-e ruz-hâ pish az sâ'at-e haft bidâr mi-shavam.
Most days I wake up before seven.
2. Separating the imperfective prefix
❌ صبحانه می خورم و می روم.
Incorrect standard spacing — productive می attaches with a ZWNJ.
✅ صبحها صبحانه میخورم و زود بیرون میروم.
sobh-hâ sobhâne mi-khoram va zud birun mi-ravam.
In the mornings I eat breakfast and leave early.
3. Copying English destination marking
❌ ساعت هشت محل کار میرسم.
Incorrect — رسیدن marks its destination with به.
✅ روزهای بارانی دیرتر به اداره میرسم.
ruz-hâ-ye bârâni dirtar be edâre mi-rasam.
On rainy days I reach the office later.
4. Leaving the coordinated verb uninflected
❌ شب کتاب میخوانم و خوابیدن.
Incorrect — both coordinated habitual predicates need finite forms.
✅ آخر شب چند صفحه کتاب میخوانم و بعد میخوابم.
âkhar-e shab chand safhe ketâb mi-khânam va ba'd mi-khâbam.
Late at night I read a few pages and then go to sleep.
Key Takeaways
- A recurring-time phrase plus می present creates a habitual reading.
- Clock times normally need no equivalent of English at.
- Keep each compound verb intact: بیدار شدن، جواب دادن، جلسه داشتن، ورزش کردن.
- Coordinated verbs share an omitted subject, but each verb still carries its personal ending.
- Standard میروم and informal Tehran میرم are parallel register choices; keep one style coherent within a text.
