Constraints on Scrambling

Persian permits extensive scrambling: an object, prepositional phrase, adverbial, or other constituent may appear away from its neutral position to mark topic, contrast, or discourse continuity. But “flexible word order” does not mean “words may be rearranged freely.” Movement favors complete constituents, interacts strongly with specificity and را, and becomes restricted across relative clauses, adjuncts, and coordination.

At C1, it is also important to distinguish actual extraction from left dislocation. A phrase at the left edge may have moved from a gap inside the clause, or it may have been introduced as a detached topic and resumed by آن, a clitic, or an understood pronoun. Linguists do not analyze every borderline example identically; the diagnostics below are more useful than a false promise of one mechanical rule.

What can scramble within a clause?

Canonical SOV is a neutral template. Persian can place a complete constituent earlier when it is already accessible, contrastive, or selected as the topic.

Fronted unitWhat travels with itTypical interpretation
specific direct objectthe whole noun phrase plus راtopic or contrast
prepositional phrasepreposition plus its complementframe, contrast, or scene setting
adverbial phrasethe complete phrasetemporal, spatial, or contrastive frame
heavy complementnormally the whole constituentend weight may compete with topicalization

این پرونده را من دیروز تحویل دادم، نه پرونده‌ی قبلی را.

in parvande râ man diruz tahvil dâdam, na parvande-ye qabli râ.

It was this file that I submitted yesterday, not the previous one. (contrastive object fronting)

این پرونده را is a complete specific object; را remains attached to it. The explicit contrast makes the marked OSV order easy to process. Compare the broader introduction to OSV fronting and topical objects.

درباره‌ی بودجه، فردا با مدیر صحبت می‌کنم.

darbâre-ye budje, fardâ bâ modir sohbat mi-konam.

As for the budget, I'll speak with the director tomorrow. (neutral topic frame)

The preposition درباره‌ی moves with بودجه. Persian does not productively strand a preposition the way colloquial English can in the person I spoke with.

Specificity and the tight bare-object zone

Specific objects marked by را scramble comparatively freely because their discourse identity is already established or recoverable. A bare nonspecific object often forms a close semantic unit with the verb and strongly favors the preverbal position.

من دیروز برای سفر بلیت خریدم.

man diruz barâ-ye safar belit kharidam.

I bought a ticket for the trip yesterday. (neutral nonspecific object)

این بلیت را من برای مادرم خریدم.

in belit râ man barâ-ye mâdaram kharidam.

I bought this ticket for my mother. (specific, contrastive fronting)

Fronting bare بلیت by itself is not absolutely impossible: with emphatic contrast, a generic reading, or poetic styling, speakers can improve otherwise poor orders. That fact is why acceptability judgments are gradient. Still, learners should not take marked rescue contexts as the neutral grammar.

💡
Specificity is a strong tendency, not a magic movement license. را-marking helps identify a displaced object, but prosody, discourse status, constituent weight, and the boundaries crossed still matter.

Constituents stay internally intact

Scrambling normally moves phrases, not arbitrary substrings. An ezâfe chain such as نتایج پژوهش تازه‌ی دانشگاه has internal dependencies; pulling a modifier or possessor away can destroy the intended grouping. Similarly, clitics and postpositions cannot be left behind at random.

نتایج پژوهش تازه‌ی دانشگاه را فردا منتشر می‌کنند.

natâyej-e pazhuhesh-e tâze-ye dâneshgâh râ fardâ montasher mi-konand.

They will publish the results of the university's new study tomorrow. (whole object fronted)

The entire chain precedes را. Moving only دانشگاه to the left would not preserve the intended possessive relation unless it were reintroduced as a separate topic with a resumptive element: دانشگاه، نتایج پژوهش تازه‌اش را....

دانشگاه، نتایج پژوهش تازه‌اش را هفته‌ی آینده منتشر می‌کند.

dâneshgâh, natâyej-e pazhuhesh-e tâze-ash râ hafte-ye âyande montasher mi-konad.

As for the university, it will publish the results of its new study next week. (left-dislocated topic with resumptive -ash)

This is not simply the possessor extracted out of an ezâfe phrase. دانشگاه is a discourse topic outside the following clause, and ـش resumes it inside the noun phrase.

Island effects: boundaries that resist extraction

A constituent inside a relative clause, an adjunct clause, or one half of a coordination is difficult or impossible to extract as ordinary scrambling. These domains are often called islands. Persian can still place a related topic at the left edge, but the internal clause then normally contains a resumptive pronoun, clitic, or full phrase.

این همان نویسنده‌ای است که مقاله‌اش جایزه گرفت.

in hamân nevisande-i ast ke maqâle-ash jâyeze gereft.

This is the writer whose article won a prize. (relative clause with resumptive -ash)

The relation between نویسنده‌ای and the possessor position is expressed by ـش. Trying to leave a bare possessor gap inside مقاله ... جایزه گرفت produces an English-like structure that Persian does not naturally accept.

Coordination behaves similarly. A topic can be related to both conjuncts when each relation is explicit:

این پژوهشگر، مقاله‌اش را خواندم و سخنرانی‌اش را هم دیدم.

in pazhuheshgar, maqâle-ash râ khândam va sokhanrâni-ash râ ham didam.

As for this researcher, I read their article and also watched their talk. (detached topic with resumption in both conjuncts)

Extracting one phrase from only the first conjunct usually disrupts coordination and creates an unclear dependency. Balanced resumption makes the discourse relation transparent.

Extraction versus base-generated topics

Clause-internal scrambling often leaves an interpreted gap and preserves markers such as را on the moved phrase. By contrast, left dislocation usually has a pause after the topic and an internal resumptive expression.

این گزارش را مدیر گفت که فردا منتشر می‌کند.

in gozâresh râ modir goft ke fardâ montasher mi-konad.

This report, the director said that he would publish tomorrow. (marked long-distance topicalization; judgments vary)

Some Iranian Persian speakers accept this with a strong topic reading; others prefer an explicit resumptive pronoun. The more robust formal version is:

این گزارش، مدیر گفت که فردا آن را منتشر می‌کند.

in gozâresh, modir goft ke fardâ ân râ montasher mi-konad.

As for this report, the director said that he would publish it tomorrow. (careful speech or writing; resumed topic)

This contrast supports two possible structural analyses, but no single surface test settles every case. Pause, resumptive material, specificity, and speaker judgment must be considered together.

💡
When a topic is separated from its role by an embedded clause or an island, resumption is the safest standard strategy. It turns a risky extraction into a transparent topic–comment relation.

Why acceptability is gradient

Scrambling judgments are affected cumulatively by several factors: a specific phrase is easier than a bare nonspecific one; a short dependency is easier than a long one; one moved constituent is easier than several; contrastive stress can rescue an order that is poor without it; and formal prose tolerates some balanced structures that spontaneous speech avoids.

این پیشنهاد را، با وجود همه‌ی مخالفت‌هایی که مطرح شده بود، هیئت پذیرفت.

in pishnehâd râ, bâ vojud-e hame-ye mokhâlefat-hâyi ke matrah shode bud, hey'at paziroft.

This proposal, despite all the objections that had been raised, the board accepted. (formal, strongly topicalized object)

This is acceptable because the object is specific, fully marked, and linked to a gap in the same matrix clause; the long adjunct increases processing cost but does not extract anything from inside itself. A speaker may still choose subject-first order for easier real-time comprehension.

Common Mistakes

Stranding را after a scrambled object

❌ این نامه من دیروز را فرستادم.

Incorrect — را belongs to the complete specific object این نامه and cannot be left near the verb.

✅ این نامه را من دیروز فرستادم.

in nâme râ man diruz ferestâdam.

This letter, I sent yesterday. (contrastive object fronting)

Fronting a preposition's complement alone

❌ این استاد، من دیروز با صحبت کردم.

Incorrect — Persian does not strand با in this construction.

✅ با این استاد، من دیروز صحبت کردم.

bâ in ostâd, man diruz sohbat kardam.

With this professor, I spoke yesterday. (contrastive PP fronting)

Extracting a possessor out of an ezâfe chain

❌ سارا را کتاب دیروز پس دادم.

Incorrect for ‘As for Sara, I returned her book’ — سارا is not the direct object and cannot take را here.

✅ سارا، کتابش را دیروز پس دادم.

sârâ, ketâb-ash râ diruz pas dâdam.

As for Sara, I returned her book yesterday. (left dislocation with resumptive clitic)

Treating a newly introduced indefinite like a ready-made topic

⚠️ یک کتاب، من از نمایشگاه خریدم.

yek ketâb, man az namâyeshgâh kharidam.

Possible with strong contrastive-topic prosody, but marked and misleading as a context-free introduction of a nonspecific book.

✅ من از نمایشگاه یک کتاب خریدم.

man az namâyeshgâh yek ketâb kharidam.

I bought a book at the fair. (neutral nonspecific object)

Key Takeaways

  • Scrambling moves complete constituents and serves topic, focus, contrast, and information flow.
  • Specific را-marked objects scramble more readily than bare nonspecific objects closely associated with the verb.
  • Prepositions, را, and internal ezâfe dependencies cannot simply be stranded.
  • Relative clauses, adjuncts, and coordination resist extraction; detached topics with resumption often express the intended relation safely.
  • Acceptability is gradient because specificity, distance, weight, prosody, register, and processing cost accumulate.
