OSV Fronting and Topical Objects

Persian can move a direct object before an overt subject, producing object–subject–verb (OSV): این گزارش را من نوشتم “As for this report, I wrote it.” The order is grammatical because را identifies the object and the verb remains final, but it is not a neutral substitute for SOV.

OSV normally packages discourse. The fronted object is already under discussion, sharply contrasted, or selected from a known set; the following subject often carries corrective focus. English usually conveys the same distinction through stress or “as for,” so copying word order alone misses why Persian chooses OSV.

Neutral SOV and marked OSV

PatternPersianLikely information structureRegister
SOVسارا این نسخه را ویرایش کردneutral report about Saraall registers
OSVاین نسخه را سارا ویرایش کردknown/contrasted version; Sara is informativeneutral when licensed
left topic + core clauseاین نسخه، سارا ویرایشش کردdetached topic resumed by cliticespecially conversational
object focusهمین نسخه را سارا ویرایش کردthis version, not another onecareful speech and writing

سارا این نسخه را دیشب ویرایش کرد.

Sârâ in noskhe râ dishab virâyesh kard.

Sara edited this version last night. (neutral SOV; broad-focus report)

این نسخه را سارا دیشب ویرایش کرد، نه من.

in noskhe râ Sârâ dishab virâyesh kard, na man.

It was Sara who edited this version last night, not me. (OSV; known object and corrective subject focus)

The sentences describe the same participants and event. The second is natural only in a context where the version is already salient or being contrasted. Its most informative material is سارا, and careful speech normally gives that subject the strongest prominence.

💡
To restore an unmarked sentence, move the subject before the را phrase: این نسخه را سارا ویرایش کرد → سارا این نسخه را ویرایش کرد. If the context loses nothing important, the OSV order was probably discourse-driven.

را makes the fronted object's role visible

Fronting is easiest to process with a discourse-identifiable object marked by را. Once این سؤال را appears, the listener knows it is not the subject even though it comes first. The following noun phrase and the verb's agreement then identify the subject.

این سؤال را هیچ‌کس در جلسه جواب نداد.

in so'âl râ hich-kas dar jalase javâb na-dâd.

Nobody answered this question at the meeting. (neutral standard; topical specific object)

شیرینی را نازنین خرید؛ چای را من درست کردم.

shirini râ Nâzanin kharid; chây râ man dorost kardam.

Nazanin bought the pastries; I made the tea. (neutral conversation; parallel object topics divide responsibility)

Bare nonspecific objects are less transparent when fronted. کتاب علی خرید can be forced into a marked or literary interpretation, but it is not a reliable neutral way to say “Ali bought a book.” The ordinary علی کتاب خرید keeps a nonspecific object close to its predicate. Animacy also matters: an animate, definite initial phrase without را is especially liable to be read as a subject.

This is why را is not a decorative “emphasis particle.” It signals an identifiable direct object and simultaneously protects the grammatical-role contrast created by scrambling. Its broader semantics are covered in The Postposition را: First Orientation.

Topic and contrast are not the same

A topic tells the listener what the clause is about; focus identifies the informative alternative. In OSV, the object often functions as topic while the subject or predicate receives focus. But a fronted object can itself be contrastively focused when words such as همین، فقط or an explicit correction select it.

همین بخش را من نفهمیدم، نه فصل قبلی را.

hamin bakhsh râ man na-fahmidam, na fasl-e qabli râ.

It was this very section that I didn't understand, not the previous chapter. (careful speech; contrastive object focus)

این هزینه‌ها را شرکت می‌پردازد؛ سهم کارکنان جدا حساب می‌شود.

in hazine-hâ râ sherkat mi-pardâzad; sahm-e kârkonân jodâ hesâb mi-shavad.

The company pays these expenses; the employees' share is calculated separately. (formal-neutral; object topic followed by informative subject)

Written OSV does not record intonation completely. In speech, a small boundary may follow a topical object, while corrective focus receives a pitch prominence. With همین بخش را, prominence can stay inside the fronted phrase. Readers infer the intended structure from را, particles, parallelism, and context.

💡
Do not label every initial object “focused.” Ask which constituent supplies the alternatives. In این نسخه را سارا ویرایش کرد، نه من, the object is the topic and سارا is the correction.

Scrambling versus left dislocation and resumption

An OSV را phrase can remain inside the clause with no resumptive clitic: این فیلم را من دیدم. Conversation also allows a more detached topic, followed by a core clause containing a matching clitic: اون فیلم، من دیدمش. The pause and resumptive ـش show that the topic sits at the left edge rather than occupying the ordinary object position.

این فیلم را من سال گذشته در جشنواره دیدم.

in film râ man sâl-e gozashte dar jashnvâre didam.

I saw this film at the festival last year. (neutral standard; clause-internal OSV, no resumptive clitic)

اون فیلم، من پارسال تو جشنواره دیدمش.

un film, man pârsâl tu jashnvâre didam-ash.

That film—I saw it at the festival last year. (informal, regional: Tehran; detached topic plus resumptive clitic)

Colloquial اون فیلم رو، من پارسال دیدمش with both رو and a clitic also occurs as emphatic topic–comment packaging. It is marked doubling, not the neutral model for every object. Formal prose normally chooses either clause-internal آن فیلم را دیدم or an explicit topic construction whose repetition serves a clear rhetorical purpose. Clitic Doubling and Resumptive Use treats that wider register-sensitive pattern.

Subjects may remain overt because they are contrastive

Persian usually omits a recoverable subject, but OSV often keeps it precisely because the subject is the new or corrected information. In این کار را من انجام می‌دهم, overt من contrasts with someone else. Removing it yields این کار را انجام می‌دهم, a natural clause meaning “I will do this task,” but it loses the correction “I, not someone else.”

این تماس را من می‌گیرم؛ تو به بقیه‌ی کارها برس.

in tamâs râ man mi-giram; to be baqiyye-ye kâr-hâ be-res.

I'll make this call; you take care of the other tasks. (neutral conversation; contrastive division of labor)

An overt subject without contrast can sound needlessly heavy, especially when several clauses repeat it. Fronting does not cancel Persian pro-drop; it merely creates a frequent reason to pronounce the subject.

A short dialogue

— این فایل‌ها را چه کسی فرستاد؟ — فایل‌های مالی را مینا فرستاد؛ بقیه را خودم فرستادم.

— in fâyl-hâ râ che kasi ferestâd? — fâyl-hâ-ye mâli râ Minâ ferestâd; baqiyye râ khod-am ferestâdam.

— Who sent these files? — Mina sent the financial files; I sent the rest myself. (neutral workplace conversation; parallel OSV contrasts)

The question establishes the files as a known set. Each answer fronts a subset and contrasts the responsible sender. This is exactly the context that licenses OSV; without that setup, neutral SOV would be more natural.

💡
OSV becomes especially clear in parallel contrasts: X را A ...؛ Y را B .... The repeated structure tells the listener that objects define the topics and subjects distinguish the alternatives.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting را before the object

❌ را این نامه مریم فرستاد.

Incorrect — را follows the whole object phrase even when that phrase is fronted.

✅ این نامه‌ی رسمی را مریم از اداره فرستاد.

in nâme-ye rasmi râ Maryam az edâre ferestâd.

Maryam sent this formal letter from the office.

2. Losing agreement after a fronted object

❌ این نامه را مریم فرستادم.

Incorrect — the verb must agree with subject مریم, not with an understood ‘I.’

✅ این نامه را مریم پیش از تعطیلات فرستاد.

in nâme râ Maryam pish az ta'tilât ferestâd.

Maryam sent this letter before the holidays.

3. Marking both object and subject with را

❌ این بسته را پیک را آورد.

Incorrect — پیک is the subject and does not take object marker را.

✅ این بسته را پیک ساختمان آورد.

in baste râ peyk-e sâkhtemân âvard.

The building courier brought this package.

4. Using plural agreement with هیچ‌کس

❌ این سؤال را هیچ‌کس جواب ندادند.

Incorrect — هیچ‌کس is grammatically singular and requires نداد.

✅ این سؤال حساس را هیچ‌کس جواب نداد.

in so'âl-e hassâs râ hich-kas javâb na-dâd.

Nobody answered this sensitive question.

Key Takeaways

  • OSV is grammatical but marked: it normally reflects topic, contrast, or a known set.
  • را makes a specific fronted object's grammatical role visible.
  • A fronted object may be the topic while the overt subject receives corrective focus.
  • Clause-internal OSV needs no resumptive clitic; detached colloquial topics often use one.
  • Restore SOV to check the neutral structure, but preserve OSV when its discourse contrast matters.
