Conversation in Iran is not sealed off from written Persian. A station announcement may contain میباشد, a lecturer may choose زیرا, and a speaker may quote an office that wrote مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. These expressions are understandable in speech, but they do not become neutral everyday choices merely because someone says them aloud.
The goal here is receptive control: recognize a bookish or institutional expression, recover its ordinary meaning, and notice why it entered the conversation. You can then answer naturally without copying the register. English speakers do something similar when they hear pursuant to and respond with ordinary okay rather than reproducing legal language.
Bookish does not mean obsolete
This page uses bookish for vocabulary strongly associated with edited prose, official language, elevated speech, or reading aloud. Some forms are fully current in those settings. Others sound pompous in an ordinary chat. That is a register restriction, not necessarily an age restriction.
| Bookish or institutional form | Everyday counterpart | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| زیرا | چون / برای اینکه | edited explanation, prepared speech |
| ایشان | ایشون / اون / اونا | respectful or formal human reference |
| میباشد | است / هست / ـه | bureaucratic and administrative style |
| مورد بررسی قرار گرفتن | بررسی شدن / بررسی کردن | official passive packaging |
| به اطلاع رساندن | خبر دادن / گفتن | notices and formal announcements |
| اقدام نمودن | اقدام کردن / کاری کردن | administrative prose |
زیرا: a written connector heard in prepared speech
زیرا means “because/for,” linking a reason to a preceding claim. It is normal in written-standard and formal explanatory speech. In spontaneous conversation, چون and برای اینکه are much more ordinary. A lecturer can use زیرا without sounding archaic; a friend who uses it in a casual anecdote may sound deliberately elevated, playful, or unusually careful.
این فرض پذیرفتنی نیست، زیرا با دادهها سازگار نیست.
in farz paziroftani nist, zirâ bâ dâde-hâ sâzgâr nist.
This assumption is unacceptable because it is inconsistent with the data. (academic/formal)
امشب نمیام، چون باید تا دیر وقت کار کنم.
emshab nemiyâm, chun bâyad tâ dir-vaqt kâr konam.
I'm not coming tonight because I have to work late. (informal conversation)
The clauses have the same reason relation, but the surrounding grammar supports different voices. Replacing only چون with زیرا would be grammatically possible; it would also make the speaker sound more written or theatrical.
ایشان: formality, respect, and human reference
ایشان refers only to people. In formal writing it can mean “he/she” respectfully or “they.” The verb commonly appears in the plural as part of respectful agreement. Colloquial Tehran ایشون preserves the respect reading in conversation. Ordinary اون or اونا lacks that added honorific value.
ایشان پس از پایان جلسه پاسخ خواهند داد.
ishân pas az pâyân-e jalase pâsokh khâhand dâd.
He or she will respond after the meeting. (formal and respectful; plural agreement)
ایشون گفتن تا ظهر برمیگردن.
ishun goftan tâ zohr bar-mi-gardan.
He or she said they'd be back by noon. (informal respectful, regional: Tehran)
If an interviewer mentions ایشان, context must resolve whether the referent is one respected person or several people. Do not infer number from the plural verb alone.
میباشد: current but institutionally marked
میباشد is a finite form of بودن used as a copular alternative in official, commercial, and bureaucratic language. It is not a “more correct” replacement for every است. Many editors prefer simpler است, and spontaneous conversation normally uses هست or a short copula. Still, learners will frequently hear میباشد when written wording is read aloud.
زمان تحویل مدارک روز سهشنبه میباشد.
zamân-e tahvil-e madârek ruz-e se-shanbe mi-bâshad.
The document-submission date is Tuesday. (bureaucratic/formal)
آخرین فرصت تحویل مدارک سهشنبه است.
âkharin forsat-e tahvil-e madârek se-shanbe ast.
The deadline for submitting the documents is Tuesday. (plain standard)
آخرین مهلت سهشنبهست، درسته؟
âkharin mohlat se-shanbe-st, doroste?
The deadline's Tuesday, right? (informal conversation)
These are not three different facts. They package the same relation for an institutional notice, plain information, and casual confirmation.
Formal compounds: find the semantic core
Official Persian often distributes a simple idea across a noun plus a light verb or a larger passive frame. Locate the nonverbal element first: بررسی “review,” اطلاع “information,” اقدام “action,” تصمیم “decision.” Then identify whether the clause reports an action, an instruction, or a passive event.
درخواستهای ناقص مورد بررسی قرار نخواهند گرفت.
darkhâst-hâ-ye nâqes mowred-e barrasi qarâr na-khâhand gereft.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. (formal administrative passive)
درخواست ناقص رو بررسی نمیکنن.
darkhâst-e nâqes ro barrasi nemi-konan.
They don't review an incomplete application. (informal generic third-plural active)
The formal sentence backgrounds the reviewers. The conversational sentence uses an unspecified “they,” a common Persian alternative to a heavy passive.
به اطلاع مسافران میرسانیم که پرواز با تأخیر انجام میشود.
be ettelâ'-e mosâferân mi-rasânim ke parvâz bâ ta'khir anjâm mi-shavad.
Passengers are advised that the flight is delayed. (formal announcement)
گفتن پرواز دیرتر راه میافته.
goftan parvâz dirtar râh mi-ofte.
They said the flight's leaving later. (informal, regional: Tehran)
The everyday paraphrase may change the syntax because natural translation follows communicative purpose rather than replacing one word at a time. For a deeper account of institutional predicates, see Formal Nominalization plus a Light Verb.
Why bookish language appears in conversation
Speakers may be reading a notice, quoting an authority, adopting a professional role, speaking humorously, or emphasizing distance. Listen for a prosodic or quotation boundary rather than assuming the speaker's whole conversation has become formal.
اپراتور گفت: «تماس شما ضبط میگردد.» بعد خودش سادهتر توضیح داد که صدای مکالمه را ضبط میکنند.
operâtor goft: «tamâs-e shomâ zabt mi-gardad.» ba'd khod-ash sâde-tar towzih dâd ke sedâ-ye mokâleme râ zabt mi-konand.
The operator said, ‘Your call is recorded.’ Then he explained more simply that they record the conversation audio. (quoted institutional wording followed by plain speech)
دوستم با خنده گفت: «اینجانب فعلا قادر به حرکت نمیباشم!»
dust-am bâ khande goft: «injâneb fe'lan qâder be harekat nemi-bâsham!»
My friend laughed and said, ‘The undersigned is presently unable to move!’ (humorous imitation of bureaucratic language)
The joke works because اینجانب and نمیباشم are recognizable as disproportionate to the casual situation.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating میباشد as a universal polite copula
⚠️ مامانم الان توی آشپزخونه میباشد.
mâmân-am alân tu-ye âshpazkhune mi-bâshad.
My mom is in the kitchen now. (grammatical, but comically bureaucratic in an ordinary chat)
✅ مامانم الان توی آشپزخونهست.
mâmân-am alân tu-ye âshpazkhune-st.
My mom's in the kitchen now. (informal conversation)
2. Reading plural agreement with ایشان as proof of several people
⚠️ چون گفتند ایشان میآیند، حتما چند نفرند.
chun goftand ishân mi-âyand, hatman chand nafar-and.
Because they said ایشان میآیند, it must refer to several people. (well-formed, but the inference is false: respectful singular is possible)
✅ ایشان ممکن است یک نفر محترم یا چند نفر باشند.
ishân momken ast yek nafar-e mohtaram yâ chand nafar bâshand.
ایشان may denote one respected person or several people.
3. Copying an entire announcement to answer casually
⚠️ در پاسخ دوستم گفتم که مراتب متعاقبا به اطلاع وی خواهد رسید.
dar pâsokh-e dust-am goftam ke marâteb mota'âqeban be ettelâ'-e vey khâhad resid.
I told my friend that the matter would subsequently be communicated to him. (grammatical, but needlessly bureaucratic for the relationship)
✅ به دوستم گفتم بعدا خبرش میکنم.
be dust-am goftam ba'dan khabar-ash mi-konam.
I told my friend I'd let him know later. (neutral conversation)
4. Calling every bookish item archaic
⚠️ زیرا و میباشد در فارسی امروز هیچ کاربردی ندارند.
zirâ va mi-bâshad dar fârsi-ye emruz hich kârbordi nadârand.
زیرا and میباشد have no use in Persian today. (well-formed statement, but factually wrong: both remain current in restricted registers)
✅ زیرا رسمیتر است و میباشد بیشتر رنگ اداری دارد.
zirâ rasmi-tar ast va mi-bâshad bishtar rang-e edâri dârad.
زیرا is more formal, and میباشد has a more administrative flavor.
Key Takeaways
- Modern formal expressions can be current yet inappropriate for a relaxed chat.
- زیرا is common in edited explanation; چون is the everyday default.
- ایشان is human, respectful or formal, and compatible with singular reference plus plural agreement.
- میباشد is institutionally marked, not a universally superior است.
- Reduce formal compounds to their semantic core, then respond in the register appropriate to your own role.
