Careful spoken Persian is clear speech that largely retains standard forms such as است، را، میرود، میخواهم، میکنند. It is common when reading aloud, teaching, presenting, interviewing, broadcasting, or speaking across regional backgrounds. It is not identical to formal writing: speakers still use natural pauses, pro-drop, short clauses, questions, repairs, and everyday vocabulary.
This register forms a bridge. A learner who controls standard writing can pronounce it carefully and be broadly understood; later, the same learner can map full forms into coherent Tehran colloquial speech. The goal is not to speak artificially slowly or pronounce invisible short vowels as letters. The staged foundation is explained on Written Forms First: The A1-A2 Contract.
Register Map
| Mode | Morphology | Syntax and vocabulary | Typical setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| reading style | full standard forms | follows written sentence closely | reading a text aloud, prepared news |
| careful spoken standard | mostly full standard forms | conversational clauses and ordinary words | class, presentation, cross-dialect talk |
| formal speech | full forms | formal vocabulary and planned organization | ceremony, official statement |
| Tehran colloquial | systematic reductions | spoken constructions and local phonology | informal urban conversation |
Reading Style: Follow the Written Form
When reading a prepared text, speakers normally voice است as ast, را as râ, and full verb endings. Prosody groups the sentence into meaningful units; punctuation helps, but good reading is not a word-by-word recital.
این نمایشگاه تا پایان هفته برای بازدید عموم باز است.
in namâyeshgâh tâ pâyân-e hafte barâ-ye bâzdid-e omum bâz ast.
This exhibition is open to the public through the end of the week. (reading style / formal-neutral announcement)
نتایج پژوهش پس از بررسی نهایی منتشر خواهند شد.
natâyej-e pazhuhesh pas az barrasi-ye nahâyi montasher khâhand shod.
The research results will be published after final review. (formal reading style)
The second sentence is suited to a written announcement. In spontaneous explanation, نتایج را بعد از بررسی نهایی منتشر میکنیم may be clearer and more direct.
Careful Conversation with Full Forms
Careful speech can use first-person viewpoint, short coordination, and ordinary predicates while retaining standard pronunciation. It therefore sounds less compressed than bureaucratic prose and less locally reduced than intimate Tehran conversation.
فکر میکنم بهتر است اول هزینهها را مقایسه کنیم.
fekr mi-konam behtar ast avval hazine-hâ râ moqâyese konim.
I think we should compare the costs first. (careful spoken standard)
من بخش آخر پرسش شما را متوجه نشدم؛ ممکن است تکرار کنید؟
man bakhsh-e âkhar-e porsesh-e shomâ râ motavajjeh na-shodam; momken ast tekrar konid?
I didn't understand the last part of your question; could you repeat it? (careful spoken standard)
بله، این روش سادهتر است، اما در همهی موارد جواب نمیدهد.
bale, in ravesh sâde-tar ast, ammâ dar hame-ye mavâred javâb na-mi-dahad.
Yes, this method is simpler, but it doesn't work in every case. (careful discussion)
The overt من in the clarification example may be omitted when no contrast is intended. Full verbal forms do not require full noun-phrase repetition.
Classroom and Explanatory Speech
Teachers often use careful standard forms so learners or a mixed audience can follow the structure. They may repeat a key term, reformulate, or pause before new information. Commands use respectful/plural ـید for the class.
لطفا مثال دوم را بخوانید و فعل جمله را پیدا کنید.
lotfan mesâl-e dovvom râ be-khânid va fe'l-e jomle râ peydâ konid.
Please read the second example and find the verb in the sentence. (classroom careful speech)
همانطور که میبینید، فعل در پایان جمله آمده است.
hamân-towr ke mi-binid, fe'l dar pâyân-e jomle âmade ast.
As you can see, the verb has come at the end of the sentence. (classroom explanation)
This speech may be slower than friendly chat, but speed is not the defining feature. A fast broadcaster can use careful forms; a hesitant learner can use colloquial forms slowly.
News and Public Speech
Broadcast speech often combines standard morphology with formal vocabulary and planned phrasing. Interviews within the same program may move toward ordinary careful speech or colloquial forms depending on participant and topic. There is no single immutable “news accent.”
سازمان هواشناسی اعلام کرده است که بارندگی تا فردا ادامه دارد.
sâzmân-e havâshenâsi e'lâm karde ast ke bârandegi tâ fardâ edâme dârad.
The meteorological organization has announced that the rain will continue until tomorrow. (news-style standard)
به گفتهی سخنگو، مسیر اصلی اکنون باز است.
be gofte-ye sokhangu, masir-e asli aknun bâz ast.
According to the spokesperson, the main route is now open. (formal broadcast style)
Learners should recognize اکنون as formal-neutral and الان as broadly conversational. Both are modern; neither is simply a pronunciation of the other.
The Bridge to Tehran Colloquial
Many mappings recur: standard است، را، خانه، میرود، میخواهم، آنها correspond in Tehran colloquial to ـه، رو/ـو، خونه، میره، میخوام، اونا. Apply the mappings across a coherent sentence rather than replacing one conspicuous word.
شما این فیلم را قبلا دیدهاید؟
shomâ in film râ qablan dide-id?
Have you seen this film before? (careful standard; polite/plural)
تو این فیلم رو قبلا دیدی؟
to in film ro qablan didi?
Have you seen this film before? (informal, regional: Tehran; familiar singular)
The contrast includes address choice and verb agreement as well as sound reduction. A listener might naturally hear mixed degrees of reduction, but a course first teaches clear endpoints so learners know what each form does.
Conversational Syntax, Not Document Syntax
Careful spoken Persian favors manageable clauses and can place a heavy که-complement after the matrix verb. It does not need the nominal chains of administrative writing.
میخواهم توضیح بدهم که چرا این برنامه تغییر کرده است.
mi-khâham towzih bedaham ke cherâ in barnâme taghyir karde ast.
I want to explain why this schedule has changed. (careful spoken standard)
اگر موافق باشید، اول دربارهی زمانبندی صحبت میکنیم.
agar movâfeq bâshid, avval darbâre-ye zamân-bandi sohbat mi-konim.
If you agree, we'll talk about the schedule first. (polite careful discussion)
Minimal Contrast
نتیجهی بررسی متعاقبا به اطلاع متقاضیان خواهد رسید.
natije-ye barrasi mota'âqeban be ettelâ'-e motaqâziyân khâhad resid.
The result of the review will subsequently be communicated to applicants. (formal administrative wording)
بعد از بررسی، نتیجه را به شما میگوییم.
ba'd az barrasi, natije râ be shomâ mi-guyim.
We'll tell you the result after the review. (careful spoken standard)
Both retain standard morphology. The difference is formal nominal packaging versus a direct conversational subject and verb.
A Short Register Shift
— ممکن است کمی آهستهتر صحبت کنید؟ — بله، حتما. اگر بخشی روشن نبود، بپرسید.
— momken ast kami âheste-tar sohbat konid? — bale, hatman. agar bakhshi rowshan na-bud, be-porsid.
— Could you speak a little more slowly? — Yes, certainly. If any part isn't clear, ask. (careful standard)
This is natural interaction, not written prose read aloud. It uses full forms because clarity and respectful distance matter.
Common Mistakes
1. Equating careful speech with slow letter-by-letter reading
Careful speech does not require a pause between every word. It uses natural prosodic groups while articulating the chosen forms clearly.
✅ جمله را روشن و با آهنگ طبیعی میخوانیم.
jomle râ rowshan va bâ âhang-e tabi'i mi-khânim.
We read the sentence clearly and with natural intonation.
2. Making a half-colloquial hybrid by doubling endings
❌ شما فردا میرینید اداره؟
Malformed — میرینید combines two alternative second-person endings.
✅ شما فردا به اداره میروید؟
shomâ fardâ be edâre mi-ravid?
Are you going to the office tomorrow? (careful standard)
3. Treating bookish vocabulary as required for careful speech
⚠️ اینجانب متعاقبا مراتب را اعلام خواهم نمود.
injâneb mota'âqeban marâteb râ e'lâm khâham nemud.
I shall subsequently announce the matter. Grammatical formal/bureaucratic Persian, not necessary careful conversation.
✅ بعدا نتیجه را به شما اعلام میکنم.
ba'dan natije râ be shomâ e'lâm mi-konam.
I'll tell you the result later. (careful spoken standard)
4. Treating Tehran forms as careless mistakes
Do not call میرم and خونه inherently wrong. Both are well-formed members of an organized colloquial system; their suitability depends on register.
✅ «میرم خونه» گفتاری است و «به خانه میروم» معیار.
«miram khune» goftâri ast va «be khâne mi-ravam» me'yâr.
‘Miram khune’ is colloquial, and ‘be khâne mi-ravam’ is standard.
