Persian speakers manage conversational turns with small forms that may contribute little to literal content. خب can open a response, acknowledge a previous turn, or move the discussion forward. یعنی can hold the floor while a speaker reformulates, or invite a listener to restate something more precisely. ببین asks for attention before an explanation, objection, or boundary-setting move.
English translations such as well, I mean, and look are approximate. The important meaning is interactional: who has the floor, whether a thought is complete, and how strongly the next point is directed at the listener. Frequency also matters. Native use is common but purposeful; inserting one after every pause sounds hesitant or confrontational.
Turn-Management Map
| Form | Conversation job | Content use to keep separate | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| خب | open, acknowledge, transition, prompt | no independent lexical meaning in most such turns | neutral spoken; uncommon in expository prose |
| یعنی | reformulate, repair, infer, hold floor | “means”: این واژه یعنی... | neutral speech and writing |
| ببین | direct attention, preface explanation/objection | literal imperative “look” | informal/familiar; ببینید polite but still directive |
The broader meanings of خب and یعنی are catalogued on خب، پس، حالا and یعنی. Here the focus is turn ownership.
خب: Open, Acknowledge, or Move On
Turn-initial خب can show that the speaker has heard the previous point and is preparing a response. It may also prompt the other person to continue or close one stage and begin another.
خب، از کدام بخش گزارش شروع کنیم؟
khob, az kodâm bakhsh-e gozâresh shoru' konim?
Right, which section of the report should we start with? (neutral conversation; opens a task)
خب، حرفت را شنیدم؛ حالا راهحل پیشنهادیات چیست؟
khob, harf-at râ shenidam; hâlâ râh-hall-e pishnehâdi-at chist?
All right, I've heard your point; now what solution do you propose? (neutral; acknowledgment plus transition)
— بعدش چی شد؟ — خب... مدیر آمد و جلسه را لغو کرد.
— ba'd-ash chi shod? — khob... modir âmad va jalase râ laghv kard.
— What happened next? — Well... the manager came and cancelled the meeting. (informal narrative; brief planning delay)
Lengthened خب... can buy a little planning time, but it also signals that an answer is coming. Silence after it therefore differs from yielding the floor completely.
یعنی: Reformulate without Yielding
Discourse یعنی tells the listener to reinterpret what came before. The speaker may correct wording, make an implication explicit, or replace an overstrong claim with a more precise one.
جلسه لغو نشده؛ یعنی، فعلا عقب افتاده است.
jalase laghv nashode; ya'ni, fe'lan aqab oftâde ast.
The meeting hasn't been cancelled; I mean, it has been postponed for now. (neutral; self-repair)
بودجه کافی نیست؛ یعنی باید بخشی از طرح را حذف کنیم.
budje kâfi nist; ya'ni bâyad bakhshi az tarh râ hazf konim.
The budget isn't enough; that is, we have to remove part of the plan. (formal-neutral; inference made explicit)
منظورم این نبود؛ یعنی میخواستم بگویم هنوز وقت داریم.
manzur-am in nabud; ya'ni mi-khâstam beguyam hanuz vaqt dârim.
That wasn't what I meant; I mean, I wanted to say we still have time. (neutral; repair while holding the turn)
As a listener response, یعنی؟ asks for a reformulation or checks an implication. It is more pointed than a general چی؟ “what?” because it requests the intended meaning.
— شاید قرارداد تمدید نشود. — یعنی باید دنبال خانهی دیگری بگردیم؟
— shâyad qarârdâd tamdid nashavad. — ya'ni bâyad donbâl-e khâne-ye digari begardim?
— The contract may not be renewed. — Do you mean we need to look for another home? (neutral clarification/inference)
Content یعنی versus Discourse یعنی
Lexical یعنی can form a definition: این واژه یعنی چه؟ “What does this word mean?” Discourse یعنی comments on an earlier utterance. Position and intonation separate them.
«هماتاقی» یعنی کسی که با شما در یک اتاق زندگی میکند.
«ham-otâqi» ya'ni kasi ke bâ shomâ dar yek otâq zendegi mi-konad.
Ham-otâqi means someone who lives in the same room as you. (neutral definition; content use)
یعنی... بهتر است اول با خودش صحبت کنیم.
ya'ni... behtar ast avval bâ khod-ash sohbat konim.
I mean... we'd better speak with her directly first. (neutral conversation; floor-holding reformulation)
ببین: Direct the Listener's Attention
Conversation-opening ببین is historically and synchronically the familiar imperative “look,” but often asks for cognitive attention rather than literal vision. It commonly prefaces an explanation, disagreement, refusal, or request for patience.
ببین، مشکل پول نیست؛ برای تحویل کار وقت نداریم.
bebin, moshkel pul nist; barâ-ye tahvil-e kâr vaqt nadârim.
Look, money isn't the problem; we don't have time to deliver the work. (familiar neutral; attention before correction)
ببین، اجازه بده اول حرفم را تمام کنم.
bebin, ejâze bede avval harf-am râ tamâm konam.
Listen, let me finish what I'm saying first. (familiar; holding or reclaiming the floor)
ببینید، من با اصل پیشنهاد موافقم، اما زمانش مناسب نیست.
bebinid, man bâ asl-e pishnehâd movâfeq-am, ammâ zamân-ash monâseb nist.
Look, I agree with the proposal in principle, but the timing isn't suitable. (polite plural form, yet still directive)
ببینید adds polite/plural agreement but does not erase the directive force. In a formal disagreement, اجازه بدهید نکتهای را روشن کنم “Allow me to clarify a point” may be safer.
Literal ببین takes a visual object or direction:
ببین چراغ آشپزخانه روشن مانده یا نه.
bebin cherâgh-e âshpazkhâne rowshan mânde yâ na.
Check whether the kitchen light has been left on. (familiar; literal/perceptual imperative)
Minimal Contrast
خب، دربارهی بودجه چه تصمیمی گرفتید؟
khob, darbâre-ye budje che tasmimi gereftid?
So, what did you decide about the budget? (opens a new turn/topic)
یعنی دربارهی بودجه هنوز تصمیم نگرفتهاید؟
ya'ni darbâre-ye budje hanuz tasmim nagerefte-id?
Do you mean you still haven't decided about the budget? (reformulates an implication)
ببینید، تصمیم گرفتهایم، ولی هنوز اعلامش نکردهایم.
bebinid, tasmim gerefte-im, vali hanuz e'lâm-ash nakarde-im.
Look, we have decided, but we haven't announced it yet. (claims attention before correcting the inference)
A Short Dialogue
— خب، بالاخره میای یا نه؟ — ببین، میخوام بیام؛ یعنی، اگه کارم تا شش تموم بشه، حتما میام.
— khob, bâlâkhare miyây yâ na? — bebin, mi-khâm biyâm; ya'ni, age kâr-am tâ shesh tamum beshe, hatman miyâm.
— Well, are you coming or not? — Look, I want to come; I mean, if I finish work by six, I'll definitely come. (informal, regional: Tehran; prompt, floor claim, then reformulation)
Common Mistakes
Translating Every خب as Lexical “Well”
⚠️ خب همیشه دربارهی خوب بودن چیزی حرف میزند.
khob hamishe darbâre-ye khub budan chizi harf mi-zanad.
Grammatical wording but a false analysis — turn-management خب need not evaluate anything as good or well.
✅ خب، حالا باید ببینیم چه گزینههایی داریم.
khob, hâlâ bâyad bebinim che gozine-hâ-yi dârim.
Right, now we need to see what options we have.
Conjugating Discourse یعنی
❌ من یعنی میکنم هنوز آماده نیستیم.
Incorrect — discourse یعنی is a fixed reformulation marker, not a light verb built with کردن.
✅ یعنی هنوز برای شروع آماده نیستیم.
ya'ni hanuz barâ-ye shoru' âmâde nistim.
In other words, we still aren't ready to begin.
Using ببین as a Neutral Politeness Formula
⚠️ ببین، لطفا گذرنامهتان را بدهید.
bebin, lotfan gozarnâme-tân râ bedahid.
Look, please give me your passport. (grammatical but socially mismatched: familiar ببین conflicts with polite plural address)
✅ لطفا گذرنامهتان را به مسئول باجه بدهید.
lotfan gozarnâme-tân râ be mas'ul-e bâje bedahid.
Please give your passport to the counter clerk. (polite neutral instruction)
Filling Every Pause with یعنی
⚠️ یعنی من یعنی فردا یعنی شاید بیایم.
ya'ni man ya'ni fardâ ya'ni shâyad biyâyam.
I mean, I, like, tomorrow, I mean, may come. (interpretable disfluent speech, but repeated یعنی obscures the repair structure)
✅ شاید فردا بیایم؛ عصر خبر میدهم.
shâyad fardâ biyâyam; asr khabar mi-daham.
I may come tomorrow; I'll let you know this evening.
Key Takeaways
- خب opens, acknowledges, prompts, or transitions; it often adds no literal content.
- یعنی holds the floor during reformulation and can ask for a more precise interpretation.
- Content یعنی defines a word; discourse یعنی reaches back to a prior proposition.
- ببین claims attention and may sound confrontational; ببینید is polite in agreement but still directive.
- Purposeful markers organize turns; indiscriminate fillers make the discourse harder to follow.
