Persian focus particles tell the listener which alternatives matter. هم adds the focused item to an existing set: “X too/also.” حتی ranks X as surprising or extreme: “even X.” مگر challenges an expectation or checks a proposition against prior belief: “surely not / wasn't it the case?” Their placement matters because moving a particle changes which constituent is added, ranked, or challenged.
English often puts too at the end of a sentence and lets intonation resolve its scope. Persian normally places هم directly after the focused constituent. حتی normally precedes its focus and often pairs with following هم. مگر typically frames a whole question, with stress selecting the challenged part.
Construction Map
| Particle | Position | Meaning contribution | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| هم | after focused constituent | additive “too/also”; sometimes scalar “even” | neutral across registers |
| حتی | before focused constituent | marks an unexpected endpoint | neutral to formal |
| حتی X هم | frame around focus | makes scalar “even X” explicit | neutral across speech and writing |
| مگر | usually clause-initial | challenges expectation or recalls shared belief | neutral/careful; مگه informal Tehran |
Additive هم: Expand a Set
هم presupposes a parallel proposition. من هم آمدم implies that someone else came. فردا هم میآیم implies another time when I come. این گزارش را هم خواندم adds this report to other things read.
من هم برای کارگاه ثبتنام کردم.
man ham barâ-ye kârgâh sabt-nâm kardam.
I registered for the workshop too. (speaker focus; other people registered)
من پنجشنبه هم به دفتر میآیم.
man panj-shanbe ham be daftar mi-âyam.
I'm coming to the office on Thursday too. (time focus; another day is already relevant)
نسخهی فارسی را هم برای مدیر فرستادم.
noskhe-ye fârsi râ ham barâ-ye modir ferestâdam.
I sent the Persian version to the manager as well. (object focus; another version was sent)
با سارا هم دربارهی سفر صحبت کردم.
bâ Sârâ ham darbâre-ye safar sohbat kardam.
I spoke with Sara about the trip too. (prepositional-phrase focus; another person was consulted)
With a را-marked object, هم follows the complete object phrase: گزارش را هم. Putting it between the noun and را breaks the natural constituent.
The separate word هم differs from derivational هم in هماتاقی and lexical همکار. The Associative Prefix هم creates a new word; additive هم adds an alternative in the sentence.
Scalar هم and Explicit حتی
Context can give هم a scalar “even” reading, especially with negation and a low endpoint: یک نفر هم نیامد “not even one person came.” حتی makes the unexpected ranking overt and precedes the constituent it ranks.
یک نفر هم به تماسهای من جواب نداد.
yek nafar ham be tamâs-hâ-ye man javâb nadâd.
Not even one person answered my calls. (scalar هم under negation)
حتی مدیر پروژه هم از این تغییر خبر نداشت.
hattâ modir-e porozhe ham az in taghyir khabar nadâsht.
Even the project manager did not know about this change. (unexpected person)
او حتی در تعطیلات هم ایمیلهایش را جواب میدهد.
u hattâ dar ta'tilât ham imeyl-hâ-yash râ javâb mi-dahad.
She answers her emails even during holidays. (unexpected time interval)
این برنامه روی گوشی قدیمی هم اجرا میشود.
in barnâme ru-ye gushi-ye qadimi ham ejrâ mi-shavad.
This app runs even on an old phone. (scalar interpretation supplied by context)
Additive and scalar readings share alternatives. The scalar reading additionally ranks one alternative as less expected. Stress usually falls within the focused phrase, while هم itself remains prosodically light.
مگر: Challenge an Expectation
Question particle مگر signals that the speaker has a prior belief, has noticed an inconsistency, or expects a particular answer. It is not a neutral yes/no marker.
مگر قرار نبود جلسه ساعت چهار شروع شود؟
magar qarâr nabud jalase sâ'at-e chahâr shoru' shavad?
Wasn't the meeting supposed to start at four? (careful standard; recalled plan)
مگر تو شمارهی تعمیرکار را نداری؟
magar to shomâre-ye ta'mirkâr râ nadâri?
Don't you have the repair technician's number? (neutral; checking an expectation)
مگر من چه قولی داده بودم؟
magar man che qowli dâde budam?
What promise had I supposedly made? (defensive challenge; focus on من/چه قولی)
In (informal, regional: Tehran) speech, مگر normally becomes مگه:
مگه نگفتی امشب خونهای؟
mage nagofti emshab khune-i?
Didn't you say you'd be home tonight? (informal, regional: Tehran; surprised reminder)
Do not confuse interrogative مگر / مگه with exception مگر “except” or مگر اینکه “unless.” The expectation effect in questions is developed on Rhetorical Questions and مگر.
Minimal Scope Contrasts
من هم سارا را دعوت کردم.
man ham Sârâ râ da'vat kardam.
I too invited Sara. (other inviters are relevant)
من سارا را هم دعوت کردم.
man Sârâ râ ham da'vat kardam.
I invited Sara too. (other invitees are relevant)
من حتی سارا را هم دعوت کردم.
man hattâ Sârâ râ ham da'vat kardam.
I even invited Sara. (Sara was an unexpected invitee)
The participants do not change, but particle position changes the alternatives under discussion.
A Short Dialogue
— مگه نیما هم برای شام میاد؟ — آره، حتی خواهرش رو هم دعوت کردم. — پس برای دو نفر دیگه هم غذا آماده کنیم.
— mage Nimâ ham barâ-ye shâm miyâd? — âre, hattâ khâhar-ash ro ham da'vat kardam. — pas barâ-ye do nafar-e dige ham ghazâ âmâde konim.
— Is Nima coming to dinner too? — Yes, I even invited his sister. — Then let's prepare food for two more people as well. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
Copying English Sentence-Final Too
⚠️ من فردا برای جلسه میآیم هم.
man fardâ barâ-ye jalase mi-âyam ham.
Marked and scope-unclear as a neutral additive sentence; ordinarily هم follows the time or participant it adds.
✅ من جمعه هم برای جلسهی هماهنگی میآیم.
man jom'e ham barâ-ye jalase-ye hamâhangi mi-âyam.
I'm coming to the coordination meeting on Friday too.
Placing هم inside the Specific Object
❌ گزارش هم را برای حسابدار فرستادم.
Incorrect — را completes the focused object phrase before additive هم.
✅ گزارش مالی را هم برای حسابدار فرستادم.
gozâresh-e mâli râ ham barâ-ye hesâbdâr ferestâdam.
I sent the financial report to the accountant too.
Reversing the حتی X هم Frame
❌ حتی هم مدیر بخش پاسخ نداد.
Incorrect — حتی precedes the focused phrase and هم follows it.
✅ حتی مدیر بخش هم به این پرسش پاسخ نداد.
hattâ modir-e bakhsh ham be in porsesh pâsokh nadâd.
Even the department manager did not answer this question.
Using مگر in a Completely Neutral Question
⚠️ مگر اسم شما چیست؟
magar esm-e shomâ chist?
What is your name, then? (grammatical only with a challenge or prior expectation; not a neutral introduction)
✅ ببخشید، اسم شما چیست؟
bebakhshid, esm-e shomâ chist?
Excuse me, what is your name? (neutral polite question)
Key Takeaways
- هم follows its focus and adds that item to salient alternatives.
- حتی precedes a surprising focus; حتی X هم makes the scalar frame explicit.
- Under negation, هم readily means “even,” especially with a minimal item.
- مگر / مگه challenges an expectation rather than asking neutrally.
- Particle position and contrastive stress determine scope, so moving a particle changes the implied comparison.
