Modern Iranian Persian preserves older politeness in blessings, ceremonial speech, traditional letters, family affection, religious settings, and playful irony. Expressions such as عمرتان دراز باد, قربانت گردم, and به عرض میرساند are intelligible today, but they do not all belong to one usable “formal” style. Some remain sincere formulas, some are literary, some are bureaucratic survivals, and some sound archaic unless quoted or reused humorously.
The advanced task is genre awareness. A historically deferential expression can create warmth in one family, solemnity at a commemoration, parody in a text message, or uncomfortable servility in a modern workplace. Morphology alone cannot select among those readings.

Living Blessings with Older Shapes
Optative باد “may it be” remains productive mainly in fixed or elevated blessings: شاد باد، پاینده باد، عمرتان دراز باد. It is (literary/ceremonial), not the ordinary future of بودن. More everyday blessings use subjunctives or imperatives such as زنده باشید and خدا حفظتان کند.
omr-etân derâz bâd va del-etân hamishe shâd.
May you live long and may your heart always be happy. (literary/ceremonial blessing)
zende bâshid, kheyli be mâ lotf kardid.
Bless you/thank you; you were very kind to us. (living polite formula)
khodâ sâye-tân râ az sar-e mâ kam na-konad.
May God preserve you for us. (traditional, affectionate blessing)
The last formula remains sincere in family or ceremonial contexts. Used toward a manager after a trivial favor, it can sound hyperbolic or ironic.
Affectionate Hyperbole: قربان and فدا
قربانت گردم/بروم and فدایت شوم literally present the speaker as a sacrifice, but living uses often mean “dear,” “thank you,” or an affectionate appeal. Short قربانت is common in warm speech. The longer forms sound more traditional, emphatic, or playful.
qorbân-at, residam khâne; negarân na-bâsh.
Thanks/dear, I'm home; don't worry. (informal affectionate)
fadây-at shavam, in-qadar khod-at râ khaste na-kon.
My dear, don't tire yourself out so much. (traditional affectionate, intimate)
qorbân-e mohabbat-e shomâ, digar vâqe'an zahmat na-keshid.
You're very kind; please truly don't trouble yourself any further. (ceremoniously polite)
These are relational formulas, not literal propositions. Even so, they are not socially empty: age, intimacy, regional habit, and performance style determine whether they feel warm or excessive.
نامهنگاری and Bureaucratic Survivals
Traditional letter writing developed humble self-reference and elevated addressee reference. به عرض میرساند “it is respectfully submitted/informed” survives in official and bureaucratic correspondence. Contemporary clear prose often prefers a direct finite sentence such as به اطلاع شما میرسانیم که... or simply اعلام میکنیم که....
be arz mi-rasânad ke darkhâst-e shomâ dar dast-e barrasi ast.
It is respectfully submitted that your request is under review. (formal/bureaucratic formula)
be ettelâ'-e shomâ mi-rasânim ke darkhâst-etân pazirofte shode ast.
We inform you that your application has been accepted. (modern formal)
dar pâsokh be nâme-ye shomâ, zamân-e jalase râ ta'yid mi-konim.
In response to your letter, we confirm the meeting time. (clear modern formal prose)
The modern alternative is not less respectful; it simply reduces inherited hierarchy and nominal distance. The humble predicate عرض کردن is analyzed on عرض کردن: to Say Humbly.
Ceremonial Speech
Commemorations, religious addresses, wedding speeches, and formal welcomes may deliberately raise the register. A phrase such as قدم رنجه فرمودید “you honored us by coming” combines honorific فرمودن with an older hospitality idiom. It is marked but still usable ceremonially.
qadam ranje farmudid va majles-e mâ râ rowshan kardid.
You honored us by coming and graced our gathering. (ceremonial/traditional)
yâd-e ostâd gerâmi bâd va râh-eshân por-rahrow.
May the esteemed professor's memory endure, and may many follow their path. (memorial/literary)
Ceremony licenses elevated parallelism that would sound theatrical in a routine email.
Archaism, Quotation, and Pastiche
Forms such as تصدقت گردم, قربان حضور انورت گردم, and elaborate دستبوس closings belong to older correspondence and stylized social voices. In a historical novel or quotation they help locate speaker and period. In modern messaging they often signal affectionate parody or irony.
tasaddoq-at gardam, marqum farmude budid ke be-zudi tashrif mi-âvarid.
My dear, you had written that you would honor us with a visit soon. (archaic letter-style pastiche; constructed example)
qorbân-e hozur-e anvar-at gardam, bâlâkhare javâb-e payâm-e mâ râ ham mi-dahid?
May I be sacrificed before your luminous presence—will you finally answer our message too? (archaic formula reused ironically; constructed)
The irony comes from collision between extravagant deference and an impatient modern request. Without shared humor, the same line can sound mocking or hostile.
Minimal Contrast
az hozur-etân dar in marâsem sepâsgozârim.
We thank you for attending this ceremony. (modern formal)
az inke qadam ranje farmudid, bi-nehâyat sepâsgozârim.
We are infinitely grateful that you honored us with your presence. (ceremonial/traditional)
Both can be sincere. The second performs greater ceremony and social elevation.
Genre-Aware Dialogue
— ostâd, sâye-tân mostadâm. — zende bâshid; in harf-hâ chist? be-farmâyid be-neshinid.
— Professor, long may your presence endure. — Bless you; there's no need for such words. Please sit. (ceremonial deference gently declined)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating an archaic formula as ordinary business style
qorbân-e hozur-e anvar-at gardam, fâyl peyvast shod.
May I be sacrificed before your luminous presence; the file is attached. Grammatically interpretable, but comic or archaic in ordinary business mail.
fâyl dar peyvast ersâl mi-shavad; bâ sepâs.
The file is attached; thank you. (modern formal)
2. Reading affectionate sacrifice literally
Do not read living قربانت literally as a wish to be sacrificed. In ordinary warm interaction it is a conventional affectionate or grateful formula.
qorbân-at, kheyli zud khabar-am kardi.
Thanks, dear; you let me know very quickly. (informal affectionate)
3. Assuming older language is always more respectful
Older wording is not automatically more respectful toward a customer. An opaque or theatrical formula can distance, confuse, or appear to mock the reader.
az saburi-ye shomâ sepâsgozârim; moshkel tâ fardâ bar-taraf mi-shavad.
Thank you for your patience; the problem will be resolved by tomorrow. (clear modern formal)
4. Missing ironic prosody and context
che lotf-e azimi farmudid!
What an immense kindness you bestowed! Valid ceremonial praise or sharp irony; context and intonation decide.
mamnun ke in kâr râ be-mowqe' anjâm dâdid.
Thank you for doing this on time. (unambiguous modern polite wording)
Key Takeaways
- Classify inherited politeness as living formula, ceremonial style, bureaucratic survival, literary archaism, or ironic reuse.
- Optative باد survives chiefly in blessings and elevated slogans.
- قربانت and فدایت شوم are conventional affectionate hyperbole, not literal propositions.
- Prefer clear modern wording in routine institutions unless ceremony is intentional.
- Label archaic pastiche and never present it as productive neutral speech.
- Interpret ironic reuse through genre, relationship, and intonation—not morphology alone.
