Conversational Persian can place two plausible numbers side by side to express a small approximate range: دو سه روز “two or three days,” ده دوازده نفر “ten or twelve people.” There is no و or یا between the two numbers. Their adjacency, ascending order, and single prosodic contour tell the listener to interpret them as rough endpoints.
This is not careless omission. It is a productive construction with restrictions. The pair normally moves upward, the values must define a sensible local range, and the following counted noun stays singular.
The compact pattern
The structure is lower estimate + upper estimate + singular noun. General counting تا may follow the pair, and human نفر can itself serve as the counted expression.
| Pattern | Example | Reading | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| two nearby small numbers + noun | دو سه روز | do se ruz | rough short duration |
| special low pair + noun | یکی دو دقیقه | yeki do daqiqe | one or two, a very small amount |
| pair + general counter + noun | سه چهار تا نامه | se chahâr tâ nâme | conversational item count |
| nonconsecutive conventional pair + human counter | ده دوازده نفر | dah davâzdah nafar | rough attendance |
| round-number span + noun | بیست سی دقیقه | bist si daqiqe | broad conversational estimate |
برای پیدا کردن جای پارک دو سه دور زدیم.
barâ-ye peydâ kardan-e jâ-ye pârk do se dowr zadim.
We drove around two or three times looking for parking. (conversational approximation)
یکی دو دقیقه صبر کن؛ مدیر الان میرسد.
yeki do daqiqe sabr kon; modir alân mi-rasad.
Wait a minute or two; the manager is about to arrive. (neutral conversation)
یکی دو is the established low-end variant, not literal coordination of pronoun یکی “one person/one item” with cardinal دو. It presents the amount as minimal and approximate.
Ascending order is part of the construction
The ordinary approximate pair goes from a lower value to a higher one: سه چهار، پنج شش، ده دوازده. Reversing it does not normally yield the same range. A speaker can utter descending numbers while correcting themself, but that is hesitation or repair, not the settled juxtaposed-range pattern.
پنج شش نفر جلوی باجه منتظر بودند.
panj shesh nafar jelow-ye bâje montazer budand.
Five or six people were waiting in front of the counter. (conversational; ascending pair)
ده دوازده صفحهی آخر را هنوز نخواندهام.
dah davâzdah safhe-ye âkhar râ hanuz na-khânde-am.
I still haven’t read the last ten or twelve pages. (neutral conversation)
The two values need not be consecutive. They must, however, be pragmatically close at the scale in question. ده دوازده نفر gives a modest local span; ده هزار نفر یک میلیون نفر cannot function as one natural loose pair because the proposed endpoints do not form a conversationally coherent estimate.
Prosody: two numbers, one estimate
Say the two cardinals without a pause and without an inserted -o-: do se ruz. The pair forms one intonational unit with the following noun; the upper value and noun carry the forward movement of the phrase. A pause can turn the first number into a false start: “two—three days.”
سه چهار تا سؤال کوتاه ازت دارم.
se chahâr tâ so'âl-e kutâh az-at dâram.
I have three or four quick questions for you. (informal conversation; one smooth range phrase)
کار تعمیر بیست سی دقیقه بیشتر طول نمیکشد.
kâr-e ta'mir bist si daqiqe bish-tar tul nemi-keshad.
The repair won’t take more than twenty or thirty minutes. (conversational estimate)
Romanization preserves this difference: بیست و سه is bist-o-se, while بیست سی is bist si. The missing linker is audible grammar, not merely an orthographic choice.
The noun and counter remain singular
The pair occupies the numeral slot of an ordinary counted phrase. The noun therefore remains singular: دو سه روز, not روزها. General تا can package individual objects: دو سه تا بشقاب. Human نفر follows the pair: ده دوازده نفر.
دو سه تا جعبه برای بستهبندی لازم داریم.
do se tâ ja'be barâ-ye baste-bandi lâzem dârim.
We need two or three boxes for packing. (conversational item count)
حدود بیست سی نفر در حیاط جمع شده بودند.
hodud-e bist si nafar dar hayât jam' shode budand.
Roughly twenty or thirty people had gathered in the courtyard. (conversational; human plural agreement)
The last sentence layers حدود over an already loose pair and is deliberately very approximate. In edited reporting, choose a cleaner expression such as بین بیست تا سی نفر if endpoints matter.
For the counter system itself, see Counting Words تا and نفر.
Approximation versus exact coordination
Juxtaposition does not mean “and.” Compare a rough duration with two exact calendar positions:
دو سه روز در شیراز میمانیم.
do se ruz dar Shirâz mi-mânim.
We’ll stay in Shiraz for two or three days. (approximate duration)
روزهای دوم و سوم در شیراز میمانیم.
ruz-hâ-ye dovvom-o-sevvom dar Shirâz mi-mânim.
We’ll stay in Shiraz on the second and third days. (two exact coordinated ordinals)
The second sentence contains ordinary conjunction و and refers to both named days. The first leaves the duration unresolved within a small range.
دو یا سه روز also gives alternatives, but makes the choice between two and three explicit. بین دو تا سه روز frames lower and upper endpoints. Juxtaposed دو سه روز is more compact and conversational.
تحویل سفارش بین دو تا سه روز کاری زمان میبرد.
tahvil-e sefâresh beyn-e do tâ se ruz-e kâri zamân mi-barad.
Delivery takes between two and three business days. (formal-neutral; explicit endpoints)
Register and writing
Juxtaposed ranges are common in speech, messages, interviews, and informal narrative. They also occur in accessible written prose, but contracts, scientific reports, and statistical tables usually require an explicit interval or a single estimate with حدود or تقریبا.
— چند روز برای جواب آزمایش صبر کنم؟ — دو سه روز کاری.
— chand ruz barâ-ye javâb-e âzmâyesh sabr konam? — do se ruz-e kâri.
— How many days should I wait for the test result? — Two or three business days. (neutral conversation)
In a public notice, نتیجه ظرف دو تا سه روز کاری اعلام میشود is less conversational and makes the interval more explicit.
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing the settled range
❌ سه دو روز آنجا میمانیم.
Incorrect as one settled approximate-range phrase — the ordinary construction proceeds upward.
✅ احتمالا دو سه روز در روستا میمانیم.
ehtemâlan do se ruz dar rustâ mi-mânim.
We’ll probably stay in the village for two or three days.
2. Pronouncing an unwritten linker
❌ پنج شش دقیقه
panj-o-shesh daqiqe
Incorrect approximate-range reading — no numeric و links the two endpoints.
✅ پنج شش دقیقهی دیگر برمیگردم.
panj shesh daqiqe-ye digar bar-mi-gardam.
I’ll be back in five or six minutes.
3. Pluralizing the directly counted noun
❌ دو سه روزها منتظر ماندیم.
Incorrect — the approximate numeral pair directly counts a singular-form noun.
✅ دو سه روز برای پاسخ منتظر ماندیم.
do se ruz barâ-ye pâsokh montazer mândim.
We waited two or three days for an answer.
4. Putting counting تا after the noun
❌ دو سه کتاب تا از نمایشگاه خریدم.
Incorrect counter position — counting تا follows the number pair and precedes the noun.
✅ از نمایشگاه دو سه تا کتاب کودک خریدم.
az namâyeshgâh do se tâ ketâb-e kudak kharidam.
I bought two or three children’s books at the fair.
5. Using bare adjacency for a formal exact interval
⚠️ ظرفیت رسمی سالن ۲۰ ۳۰ نفر است.
zarfiyyat-e rasmi-ye sâlon bist si nafar ast.
Possible only as a loose spoken estimate — bare adjacency is unsuitable for a formal exact capacity.
✅ ظرفیت مجاز سالن بین ۲۰ تا ۳۰ نفر است.
zarfiyyat-e mojâz-e sâlon beyn-e bist tâ si nafar ast.
The hall’s permitted capacity is between twenty and thirty people. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Put the lower estimate before the higher one: دو سه، پنج شش، ده دوازده.
- Pronounce the pair without و and without a pause that turns it into self-correction.
- Keep the counted noun singular; place optional تا after the whole pair.
- Use juxtaposition for compact conversational approximation, not a formal exact interval.
- Distinguish approximate adjacency from exact coordination, explicit alternatives with یا, and bounded ranges with بین ... تا ....
