Persian can package an event as a noun. An infinitive such as خواندن khândan “to read/reading” or an action noun such as بررسی barrasi “examination” can head a noun phrase, and ezâfe can link it to an object or another argument: خواندن کتاب khândan-e ketâb “reading the book,” بررسی درخواست barrasi-ye darkhâst “examination of the request.”
This nominal pattern reverses the ordinary verb phrase. A clause-like expression has the object before the verb or infinitive: کتاب خواندن ketâb khândan “to read books/book-reading.” A noun-like event expression begins with the action and links rightward: خواندن کتاب khândan-e ketâb. Because consonant-final ezâfe is normally unwritten, خواندن کتاب and fully marked pedagogical خواندنِ کتاب are the same construction in ordinary orthography, not two different written standards.
Three ways to package the same event
| Shape | Example | Reading | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| object + infinitive | کتاب خواندن | ketâb khândan | verb-like activity; neutral and common |
| infinitive + ezâfe + object | خواندن کتاب | khândan-e ketâb | noun-like event, “the reading of the book” |
| finite object + verb | کتاب را خواندم | ketâb râ khândam | asserted event with tense and person |
| action noun + ezâfe + object | بررسی درخواست | barrasi-ye darkhâst | institutional or formal nominal style |
These choices overlap in meaning but differ in grammar and discourse. کتاب خواندن presents an activity without selecting a particular book. خواندن این کتاب makes the reading itself the head and identifies its object. این کتاب را خواندم asserts who did what in a completed clause.
کتاب خواندن پیش از خواب آرامم میکند.
ketâb khândan pish az khâb ârâm-am mi-konad.
Reading books before bed calms me. (neutral; object + infinitive activity)
خواندن این کتاب حدود سه ساعت وقت میگیرد.
khândan-e in ketâb hodud-e se sâ'at vaqt mi-girad.
Reading this book takes about three hours. (neutral standard; nominalized infinitive + object)
این کتاب را دیشب تا آخر خواندم.
in ketâb râ dishab tâ âkhar khândam.
I read this book to the end last night. (finite clause)
What ezâfe does to the object
A transitive verbal noun preserves the conceptual participants of its verb: someone reads something, examines something, or translates something. Ezâfe can link the event noun to its patient/theme, roughly like English of in “the reading of the report.” It does not turn the embedded noun into a finite-clause object marked independently with را.
بررسی درخواست شما فردا آغاز میشود.
barrasi-ye darkhâst-e shomâ fardâ âghâz mi-shavad.
The examination of your application will begin tomorrow. (formal/administrative)
ترجمهی قرارداد دو هفته طول کشید.
tarjome-ye qarârdâd do hafte tul keshid.
The translation of the contract took two weeks. (formal-neutral)
The whole noun phrase can itself be a direct object of another verb. In بررسی درخواست را آغاز کردیم, را follows the completed event noun phrase, not the embedded درخواست alone.
بررسی درخواست را پس از جلسه آغاز کردیم.
barrasi-ye darkhâst râ pas az jalase âghâz kardim.
We began the examination of the request after the meeting. (formal-neutral)
Compare the finite alternative درخواست را بررسی کردیم “we examined the request.” The same referent can be embedded inside a nominal event or serve directly as the object of a finite verb; را marks the clause-level object in each structure.
Agent and object ambiguity
Ezâfe labels dependency but not semantic roles. With an action noun, a following human noun may be the agent, the object, or simply an associated possessor. انتقاد مدیر enteqâd-e modir can mean “the manager's criticism” and, in a suitable context, “criticism of the manager.” Good formal prose states the role when both readings are plausible.
انتقاد مدیر از طرح جدید بسیار صریح بود.
enteqâd-e modir az tarh-e jadid besyâr sarih bud.
The manager's criticism of the new plan was very explicit. (formal; مدیر is the critic)
انتقاد از مدیر در جلسهی بعدی هم ادامه یافت.
enteqâd az modir dar jalase-ye ba'di ham edâme yâft.
Criticism of the manager continued at the next meeting too. (formal; از marks the target)
This minimal contrast makes مدیر the ezâfe-linked agent in the first sentence and the از complement—the target of criticism—in the second. It is safer than asking the reader to infer the direction of انتقاد مدیر.
For administrative event nouns, توسط or از سوی can identify an agent explicitly. These phrases are formal and often heavier than a finite active clause.
بررسی پرونده توسط کمیتهی مستقل انجام شد.
barrasi-ye parvande tavassot-e komite-ye mostaqel anjâm shod.
The file was examined by an independent committee. (formal/administrative nominal style)
کمیتهی مستقل پرونده را بررسی کرد.
komite-ye mostaqel parvande râ barrasi kard.
An independent committee examined the file. (clearer active finite clause)
The second version names the agent as subject and the file as object. It is shorter and usually better in neutral prose when institutional impersonality is not important.
Dense formal nominal style
Academic and bureaucratic Persian often nests verbal nouns inside ezâfe chains: بررسی دقیق امکان اجرای طرح barrasi-ye daqiq-e emkân-e ejrâ-ye tarh “careful examination of the possibility of implementing the plan.” Every added event noun creates another potential argument relationship.
بررسی دقیق امکان اجرای طرح ضروری است.
barrasi-ye daqiq-e emkân-e ejrâ-ye tarh zaruri ast.
A careful examination of the possibility of implementing the plan is necessary. (formal/academic)
باید دقیق بررسی کنیم که آیا میتوان این طرح را اجرا کرد.
bâyad daqiq barrasi konim ke âyâ mi-tavân in tarh râ ejrâ kard.
We must examine carefully whether this plan can be implemented. (neutral, clause-based alternative)
Both are grammatical. The nominal version foregrounds procedures and abstractions; the finite version exposes the logical question and an understood human examiner. Heavy Noun Phrases and Rightward Weight gives criteria for revising chains that have become difficult to parse.
A short editorial exchange
منظورتان بررسی عملکرد کمیته است یا بررسی پرونده؟
manzur-etân barrasi-ye amalkard-e komite ast yâ barrasi-ye parvande?
Do you mean an examination of the committee's performance or an examination of the file? (formal/careful spoken)
بررسی پرونده به دست کمیته؛ خواهش میکنم همین را صریح بنویسید.
barrasi-ye parvande be dast-e komite; khâhesh mi-konam hamin râ sarih benevisid.
The examination of the file by the committee; please state exactly that. (formal editorial clarification)
The question turns the hidden roles into separate candidate phrases. The reply then names both the object and agent instead of leaving بررسی کمیته unresolved.
Common Mistakes
1. Silencing ezâfe after a nominalized infinitive
❌ خواندن کتاب وقت میگیرد.
khândan ketâb vaqt mi-girad
Incorrect reading for this head-first event noun — pronounce خواندنِ کتاب.
✅ خواندن کتابهای فنی وقت میگیرد.
khândan-e ketâb-hâ-ye fanni vaqt mi-girad.
Reading technical books takes time.
2. Treating ordinary kasre as mandatory spelling
❌ خواندن- کتاب دشوار بود.
Incorrect — do not expose consonant-final ezâfe with a hyphen or routinely written kasre in ordinary running text.
✅ خواندن مقاله دشوار بود.
khândan-e maqâle doshvâr bud.
Reading the article was difficult.
3. Dropping visible هی after a vowel-final action noun
❌ مطالعه پرونده تمام شد.
Incorrect for the intended ‘study of the file’ — مطالعه ends in silent ه and requires هی.
✅ مطالعهی پرونده تمام شد.
motâle'e-ye parvande tamâm shod.
The study of the file was completed.
4. Assuming the following noun has only one semantic role
❌ انتقاد مدیر همیشه یعنی مدیر انتقاد کرد.
Incorrect — without context, مدیر can be associated with either the source or target of criticism.
✅ انتقاد مدیر از بودجه در گزارش ثبت شد.
enteqâd-e modir az budje dar gozâresh sabt shod.
The manager's criticism of the budget was recorded in the report.
5. Placing را inside the nominal phrase
❌ بررسی را درخواست آغاز کردیم.
Incorrect — درخواست is linked inside the event noun phrase; را follows the completed phrase.
✅ بررسی درخواست را امروز آغاز کردیم.
barrasi-ye darkhâst râ emruz âghâz kardim.
We began examining the request today.
Key Takeaways
- کتاب خواندن is object + infinitive; خواندن کتاب is noun-like khândan-e ketâb with an often invisible ezâfe.
- Verbal nouns can link to their objects, but ezâfe does not label every argument role.
- Use از, توسط, از سوی, or a finite clause when agent and patient could be confused.
- را marks the completed event noun phrase when that phrase is a clause-level object.
- Formal nominal chains are grammatical but often clearer when unpacked into finite clauses.
