Persian indexed reflexives—خودم، خودت، خودش، خودمان، خودتان، خودشان—usually refer to the subject of their own clause. In a report of speech, thought, belief, or intention, however, they can sometimes point back to a perspective holder in a higher clause. That is why کامران گفت که ناهید مقالهی خودش را فرستاده است can leave the article’s owner ambiguous.
“Long-distance reflexive” names this cross-clause possibility; it does not mean that خودش may refer to any earlier noun. Locality, subjecthood, the clitic’s person and number, the reporting predicate, and discourse perspective all constrain the reading. Iranian speakers can disagree when context does not settle the competition, so responsible writing sometimes repeats a name.
Start with the local reading
In a simple clause, an indexed خود normally refers to that clause’s subject. As a direct object, the reflexive takes را; as a possessor, it follows the possessed noun through ezâfe.
| Role | Pattern | Default antecedent |
|---|---|---|
| direct object | subject + خودش را + verb | local subject |
| object of preposition | subject + به/از خودش + verb | local subject |
| possessor | subject + noun-e خودش + verb | local subject |
| inside a reported clause | speaker/thinking subject + که ... خودش ... | local subject often preferred; perspective holder also possible |
پروین خودش را در عکس گروهی شناخت.
Parvin khod-ash râ dar aks-e goruhi shenâkht.
Parvin recognized herself in the group photo. (neutral; local direct-object reflexive)
فرهاد یادداشت خودش را کنار رایانه گذاشت.
Farhâd yâddâsht-e khod-ash râ kenâr-e râyâne gozâsht.
Farhad put his own note beside the computer. (neutral; local reflexive possessor)
This local default is the safe starting point. The basic forms and the distinction from emphatic خودش are reviewed on خود as Reflexive Pronoun.
What changes across a clause boundary
In a sentence with گفت که، فکر کرد که، باور داشت که, two centers can compete. The embedded subject supplies the ordinary local antecedent; the matrix subject supplies the perspective from which the report or thought is presented.
کامران گفت که ناهید مقالهی خودش را فرستاده است.
Kâmrân goft ke Nâhid maqâle-ye khod-ash râ ferestâde ast.
Kamran said that Nahid had sent his or her own article. (potentially Nahid’s or Kamran’s; context required)
The local reading makes it Nahid’s article. A discourse in which Kamran is discussing his research can support the long-distance reading “Kamran’s article.” Neither the third-singular clitic ـش nor Persian’s gender-neutral pronoun system distinguishes them.
کامران گفت که ناهید مقالهی ناهید را فرستاده است.
Kâmrân goft ke Nâhid maqâle-ye Nâhid râ ferestâde ast.
Kamran said that Nahid had sent Nahid’s article. (explicit local-owner reading)
کامران گفت که ناهید مقالهی کامران را فرستاده است.
Kâmrân goft ke Nâhid maqâle-ye Kâmrân râ ferestâde ast.
Kamran said that Nahid had sent Kamran’s article. (explicit higher-owner reading)
Repeating a name can sound heavier than خودش, but it is often the better editorial decision in contracts, instructions, news, and any passage where ownership matters.
Person and number eliminate candidates
The clitic attached to خود must match its intended antecedent in person and number. This does not always identify one person, but it can exclude competitors.
من فکر میکردم همکارانم از پیشنهاد خودم حمایت میکنند.
man fekr mi-kardam hamkârân-am az pishnehâd-e khod-am hemâyat mi-konand.
I thought my colleagues supported my own proposal. (خودم forces a first-person antecedent)
کامران فکر میکرد همکارانش پیشنهاد خودش را رد کردهاند.
Kâmrân fekr mi-kard hamkârân-ash pishnehâd-e khod-ash râ rad karde-and.
Kamran thought his colleagues had rejected his proposal. (singular خودش cannot match plural همکاران)
In the second example, number and the attitude context work together: plural همکارانش cannot antecede singular خودش, while Kamran is the singular thinker whose perspective structures the complement.
Polite شما and respectful ایشان take plural-indexed خودتان and خودشان. Their grammatical number matters even when one person is addressed or respected.
شما گفتید که دستیاران نظر خودتان را ثبت کردهاند.
shomâ goftid ke dast-yârân nazar-e khod-etân râ sabt karde-and.
You said that the assistants had recorded your own opinion. (polite; خودتان identifies the higher addressee)
Speech, thought, and commands do not behave identically
Perspective-sensitive readings are easiest with conscious attitude holders: someone speaks, thinks, believes, hopes, fears, or evaluates. Mere physical distance is irrelevant. A random noun in a preceding clause does not automatically become an antecedent.
مینا گفت که عکس خودش را فردا میفرستد.
Minâ goft ke aks-e khod-ash râ fardâ mi-ferestad.
Mina said that she would send her own photo tomorrow. (neutral; Mina is both reporter and understood embedded subject)
سهراب از لیلا خواست که از خودش دفاع کند.
Sohrâb az Leylâ khâst ke az khod-ash defâ' konad.
Sohrab asked Leila to defend herself or him. (structurally possible ambiguity; local Leila reading is usually easier)
In the request sentence, لیلا is the understood subject of دفاع کند, strongly favoring “herself.” A context about defending Sohrab can make “him” available for some speakers, but it is poor writing to depend on that reading. Say از سهراب دفاع کند when Sohrab is intended.
The most elaborate viewpoint effects belong to Logophoric and Perspective Uses of خود. For B1 production, the rule is simpler: prefer a local reading and repair consequential ambiguity.
Bare خود is not a universal disambiguator
Bare خود occurs productively in generic and formal styles: هر کس باید به خود اعتماد کند. Indexed forms are more usual when a particular participant must be identified. Removing ـش does not create a magic long-distance form; it can instead make person and number less explicit.
هر پژوهشگر باید محدودیتهای کار خود را توضیح دهد.
har pazhuheshgar bâyad mahdudiyyat-hâ-ye kâr-e khod râ towzih dahad.
Every researcher must explain the limitations of their own work. (formal/generic; bare خود locally oriented)
Common Mistakes
1. Expecting third-person خودش to mean “my own”
⚠️ من فکر میکردم همه از تصمیم خودش راضیاند.
man fekr mi-kardam hame az tasmim-e khod-ash râzi-and.
Grammatical if the decision belongs to some third-singular person, but not for ‘my own decision’: a first-person antecedent requires خودم.
✅ من فکر میکردم همه از تصمیم خودم راضیاند.
man fekr mi-kardam hame az tasmim-e khod-am râzi-and.
I thought everyone was satisfied with my own decision.
2. Assuming the nearest noun always decides
⚠️ فریبرز گفت که مهسا طرح خودش را ارائه کرده است.
Fariborz goft ke Mahsâ tarh-e khod-ash râ erâ'e karde ast.
Grammatical but potentially ambiguous: the plan may be Mahsa’s or, in context, Fariborz’s.
✅ فریبرز گفت که مهسا طرح فریبرز را ارائه کرده است.
Fariborz goft ke Mahsâ tarh-e Fariborz râ erâ'e karde ast.
Fariborz said that Mahsa had presented Fariborz’s plan. (unambiguous)
3. Adding را inside a reflexive possessor phrase
❌ نازنین کتاب خودش را را آورد.
Incorrect — را follows the whole object phrase only once.
✅ نازنین کتاب خودش را برای من آورد.
Nâzanin ketâb-e khod-ash râ barâ-ye man âvard.
Nazanin brought me her own book.
4. Using a nonreflexive pronoun for an intended local reading
⚠️ بهرام گفت که او را در آینه دیده است.
Bahrâm goft ke u râ dar âyene dide ast.
Grammatical, but او normally identifies someone other than Bahram; it does not clearly mean ‘himself.’
✅ بهرام گفت که خودش را در آینه دیده است.
Bahrâm goft ke khod-ash râ dar âyene dide ast.
Bahram said that he had seen himself in the mirror.
Key Takeaways
- The local subject is the first candidate for indexed خود.
- Speech and thought can make a higher perspective holder available across a clause boundary.
- Person and number on خودم، خودتان، خودش constrain reference; third-singular خودش does not mark gender.
- A sentence may remain genuinely ambiguous after every grammatical test.
- Repeat the intended name or role when ownership or responsibility must be unmistakable.
