Logophoric and Perspective Uses of خود

Persian خود usually points back to a subject: مریم خودش را دید “Maryam saw herself.” In reported speech, thought, perception, and attitude, however, it can remain oriented toward the person whose perspective is being represented across a clause boundary. This long-distance, viewpoint-sensitive use is often called logophoric.

The result is expressive but potentially ambiguous. In علی گفت که رضا از خودش دفاع کند, خودش may be understood locally as Reza or, in a suitable context, as Ali, the source of the reported words. Persian does not impose a simple “nearest noun always wins” rule; subjecthood, person marking, verb meaning, and discourse perspective interact.

مریم خودش را در آینه دید.

maryam khod-ash râ dar âyene did.

Maryam saw herself in the mirror. (neutral standard; local reflexive)

علی فکر می‌کرد همه با خودش مخالف‌اند.

ali fekr mi-kard hame bâ khod-ash mokhâlef-and.

Ali thought that everyone was against him. (neutral standard; perspective-oriented خود)

Local subject orientation

Inside one clause, the subject is the default anchor. A reflexive direct object takes را; a reflexive possessor follows the possessed noun through ezâfe.

رضا خودش را برای مصاحبه آماده کرد.

rezâ khod-ash râ barâ-ye mosâhebe âmâde kard.

Reza prepared himself for the interview. (local direct-object reflexive)

سارا کلید خودش را روی میز گذاشت.

sârâ kelid-e khod-ash râ ru-ye miz gozâsht.

Sara put her own key on the table. (local reflexive possessor)

These cases differ from emphatic سارا خودش کلید را آورد “Sara herself brought the key,” where خودش adds focus rather than fills an object or possessor role. Review the basic distinction on the reflexive خود page.

Reported thought and the perspective holder

Attitude predicates such as فکر کردن، باور داشتن، امیدوار بودن، ترسیدن create a mental perspective. A reflexive inside their complement can refer to that perspective holder even when another noun intervenes.

لیلا باور داشت که همکارانش به توانایی خودش اعتماد دارند.

leylâ bâvar dâsht ke hamkârân-ash be tavânâyi-ye khod-ash e'temâd dârand.

Leila believed that her colleagues trusted her ability. (formal-neutral; خودش follows Leila's perspective)

نیما می‌ترسید تصمیم خودش به گروه آسیب بزند.

nimâ mi-tarsid tasmim-e khod-ash be goruh âsib bezanad.

Nima feared that his own decision would harm the group. (neutral standard; viewpoint holder)

The logophoric reading is not licensed by distance alone. The antecedent is typically a conscious participant whose speech, thought, knowledge, or evaluation organizes the embedded content.

💡
Ask “whose point of view is this clause reporting?” after checking the local subject. A matrix speaker or thinker can anchor خود, but an arbitrary nearby noun normally cannot.

Speech reports and command complements

Verbs of saying can create two competitors: the speaker of the report and the subject who performs the embedded action. Person marking sometimes resolves the relation, but third-person خودش does not distinguish two singular people.

مدیر به سارا گفت که گزارش خودش را اصلاح کند.

modir be sârâ goft ke gozâresh-e khod-ash râ eslâh konad.

The manager told Sara to revise her/his own report. (formally ambiguous: خودش may refer to Sara or the manager)

If the intended owner is Sara, write گزارش سارا; if it is the manager, write گزارش مدیر. Explicit repetition can be better style than elegant ambiguity.

مدیر به سارا گفت که گزارش سارا را اصلاح کند.

modir be sârâ goft ke gozâresh-e sârâ râ eslâh konad.

The manager told Sara to revise Sara's report. (unambiguous repair)

مدیر به سارا گفت که گزارش مدیر را اصلاح کند.

modir be sârâ goft ke gozâresh-e modir râ eslâh konad.

The manager told Sara to revise the manager's report. (unambiguous repair)

Person features can constrain reference

The enclitic on خود normally matches its antecedent. First- and second-person forms therefore rule out many third-person candidates.

من فکر می‌کردم همه از کار خودم راضی‌اند.

man fekr mi-kardam hame az kâr-e khod-am râzi-and.

I thought everyone was satisfied with my work. (خودم identifies the first-person perspective holder)

شما گفتید که نتیجه‌ی خودتان را اعلام می‌کنید.

shomâ goftid ke natije-ye khod-etân râ e'lâm mi-konid.

You said that you would announce your own result. (polite/plural; person marking resolves reference)

Polite شما takes خودتان and plural verb agreement. A third-person خودش cannot encode gender and should not be translated as automatically masculine.

Discourse antecedents and formal interpretation

In narratives, a sustained viewpoint can make a discourse-salient character the natural antecedent across more than one clause. This is strongest in free indirect style and reported consciousness. It is also where readers can disagree.

لیلا نامه را دوباره خواند. چرا دیگران حرف خودش را باور نمی‌کردند؟

leylâ nâme râ dobâre khând. cherâ digarân harf-e khod-ash râ bâvar nemi-kardand?

Leila reread the letter. Why didn't the others believe what she said? (constructed free-indirect-style example; singular خودش tracks Leila rather than plural دیگران)

Here number helps: singular خودش cannot match plural دیگران, while the free-indirect question sustains Leila's viewpoint. Formal analysis should preserve ambiguity when grammar and context do not decide it; do not silently choose the nearest noun simply because English reflexives are more locally restricted.

Common Mistakes

1. Applying an absolute nearest-noun rule

❌ در جمله‌ی «علی فکر می‌کرد همه با خودش مخالف‌اند»، خودش فقط به همه اشاره می‌کند.

Incorrect — viewpoint favors Ali; proximity alone does not decide reference.

✅ در این جمله خودش به علی برمی‌گردد.

dar in jomle khod-ash be ali bar-mi-gardad.

In this sentence, khodash refers back to Ali.

2. Claiming every third-person example is unambiguous

❌ گزارش خودش فقط می‌تواند گزارش سارا باشد.

Incorrect when a manager and Sara are both salient third-person candidates.

✅ گزارش سارا ابهام را از بین می‌برد.

gozâresh-e sârâ ebhâm râ az beyn mi-barad.

‘Sara's report’ removes the ambiguity.

3. Mismatching person on خود

❌ من از کار خودش راضی بودم.

as ‘my own work’

Incorrect for ‘my own work’ — first-person antecedent requires خودم.

✅ من از کار خودم راضی بودم.

man az kâr-e khod-am râzi budam.

I was satisfied with my own work.

4. Giving polite شما singular forms

❌ شما گفتی نظر خودت را می‌نویسی.

polite address

Incorrect in polite address — use plural agreement and خودتان.

✅ شما گفتید نظر خودتان را می‌نویسید.

shomâ goftid nazar-e khod-etân râ mi-nevisid.

You said you would write your own opinion. (polite)

Key Takeaways

  • Local subject orientation is the default, but speech and thought can license a perspective-holder antecedent across clauses.
  • Third-person خودش may be genuinely ambiguous when two salient singular people compete.
  • Person marking on خودم/خودتان constrains interpretation.
  • Repeat a name or role when accurate reference matters.
  • Formal analysis should distinguish grammatical possibilities from contextually preferred readings.
