Persian خود khod can intensify a person or thing: من خودم انجامش دادم “I did it myself,” خود کتاب گران نبود “the book itself was not expensive.” In this use, خود adds contrastive focus: the relevant participant personally acted, or the statement concerns the exact entity rather than something associated with it.
The same word also forms reflexives such as خودش را دید “he/she saw himself/herself.” Learners must distinguish the two by syntax. Emphatic خود can be removed while the clause retains its participants; reflexive خود fills an argument or possessor position and cannot simply disappear without changing who did what to whom.
Main emphatic patterns
| Pattern | Meaning | Example | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| pronoun + خود + matching clitic | I/you/etc. personally | من خودم | neutral/current |
| noun + خودش | that person personally | مدیر خودش | neutral, frequent in speech |
خودِ
| the entity itself, not something related | خودِ کتاب | neutral to formal |
| خودم without overt pronoun | I myself; subject recovered from context | خودم میروم | neutral/current |
After an independent pronoun, خود normally carries the matching pronominal enclitic: من خودم، تو خودت، او خودش، ما خودمان، شما خودتان، آنها خودشان. These endings identify the emphasized participant; they are not verb agreement.
من خودم این ایمیل را نوشتم.
man khod-am in imeyl râ neveshtam.
I wrote this email myself. (neutral standard; nobody wrote it for me)
شما خودتان نتیجه را اعلام میکنید؟
shomâ khod-etân natije râ e'lâm mi-konid?
Will you announce the result yourself? (polite, careful spoken standard)
آنها خودشان هزینهی سفر را پرداخت کردند.
ân-hâ khod-eshân hazine-ye safar râ pardâkht kardand.
They paid the travel expenses themselves. (neutral standard)
The verb agrees independently: میکنید matches polite/plural شما, and کردند matches plural آنها. A polite شما therefore pairs with خودتان and plural verb agreement, not singular خودت or میکنی.
Why emphasis is not reflexivity
Compare these sentences:
لیلا خودش گزارش را نوشت.
leylâ khod-ash gozâresh râ nevesht.
Leila wrote the report herself. (emphatic: Leila personally did it)
لیلا خودش را در آینه دید.
leylâ khod-ash râ dar âyene did.
Leila saw herself in the mirror. (reflexive direct object)
Remove خودش from the first sentence and لیلا گزارش را نوشت remains a complete clause with the same writer and report; only the “personally” contrast vanishes. Remove خودش را from the second and the object of “see” disappears. This deletion test is more useful than relying on English translation, where herself has both functions too.
Object marker را belongs to the reflexive noun phrase in the second example. Emphatic خودش beside the subject does not take را. For a full treatment of reflexive binding, see خود as a reflexive pronoun.
Postposed emphatic forms: من خودم
The common pattern places the emphatic immediately after the pronoun or noun it reinforces. It answers an implicit contrast such as “not an assistant,” “not someone else,” or “without help.”
دکتر خودش بعدازظهر با شما تماس میگیرد.
doktor khod-ash ba'd-az-zohr bâ shomâ tamâs mi-girad.
The doctor will personally call you this afternoon. (polite/neutral)
ما خودمان اتاق را رنگ کردیم، ولی برقکاری را سپردیم.
mâ khod-emân otâq râ rang kardim, vali barq-kâri râ sepordim.
We painted the room ourselves, but hired someone for the electrical work. (neutral standard)
Persian often omits an ordinary subject pronoun, but emphatic خودم can remain because it carries focus rather than merely repeating the verb ending.
خودم فردا مدارک را تحویل میدهم.
khod-am fardâ madârek râ tahvil mi-daham.
I'll hand in the documents myself tomorrow. (neutral standard)
English learners sometimes assume Persian must retain من because English needs an overt subject. It does not: first-person میدهم already identifies the subject, while خودم contributes the contrast.
Preposed خودِ کتاب
To single out an exact noun phrase, Persian can put خود before it and link the two with ezâfe: خودِ کتاب “the book itself,” خودِ مسئله “the issue itself,” خودِ مدیر “the manager personally.” Consonant-final ezâfe is heard but normally unwritten in the target.
خود کتاب گران نبود؛ هزینهی ارسال زیاد بود.
khod-e ketâb gerân nabud; hazine-ye ersâl ziyâd bud.
The book itself wasn't expensive; the shipping cost was high. (neutral standard)
مشکل از خود دستگاه نیست؛ کابلش خراب شده است.
moshkel az khod-e dastgâh nist; kâbel-ash kharâb shode ast.
The problem isn't with the device itself; its cable has failed. (neutral standard)
With a person, the preposed pattern can sound more contrastively pointed or formal than the ordinary postposed pattern. خود مدیر تصمیم گرفت foregrounds “the manager, not a delegate”; مدیر خودش تصمیم گرفت is a very natural conversational equivalent.
خود مدیر در جلسه حاضر شد، نه نمایندهاش.
khod-e modir dar jalase hâzer shod, na namâyande-ash.
The manager attended the meeting in person, not the manager's representative. (formal-neutral contrast)
Placement and information focus
Neutral emphatic خود stays next to the phrase it intensifies. Moving it to the far right as an afterthought is possible in informal speech—intonation can repair the connection—but edited prose favors adjacency. With multiple possible referents, immediate placement prevents ambiguity.
چه کسی این میز را تعمیر کرد؟
che kasi in miz râ ta'mir kard?
Who repaired this desk? (careful spoken standard)
صاحبخانه خودش تعمیرش کرد.
sâheb-khâne khod-ash ta'mir-ash kard.
The landlord repaired it personally. (careful spoken standard)
The first ـش identifies the emphasized subject; the second is an object clitic meaning “it.” Identical clitic shapes can perform different functions depending on their host and construction.
Register
من خودم and خود کتاب are current across speech and writing. In colloquial Tehran Persian, plural-person forms commonly have ـمون، ـتون، ـشون: ما خودمون انجامش دادیم “we did it ourselves.” Formal edited Persian keeps خودمان، خودتان، خودشان. The colloquial forms are ordinary in their register, not errors.
ما خودمون همهچی رو آماده کردیم.
mâ khod-emun hame-chi ro âmâde kardim.
We prepared everything ourselves. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Mismatching the enclitic with the emphasized pronoun
❌ ما خودم انجام دادیم.
Incorrect — first-person plural ما requires خودمان in standard Persian.
✅ ما خودمان انجام دادیم.
mâ khod-emân anjâm dâdim.
We did it ourselves.
2. Marking a subject emphatic with را
❌ لیلا خودش را گزارش را نوشت.
Incorrect — emphatic خودش reinforces the subject and does not take را.
✅ لیلا خودش گزارش را نوشت.
leylâ khod-ash gozâresh râ nevesht.
Leila wrote the report herself.
3. Omitting ezâfe after preposed خود
❌ خود کتاب گران نبود.
khod ketâb gerân nabud
Incorrect pronunciation — preposed خود links to the emphasized noun with ezâfe.
✅ خود کتاب گران نبود.
khod-e ketâb gerân nabud.
The book itself wasn't expensive.
4. Giving polite شما singular agreement
❌ شما خودت تصمیم میگیری.
polite address
Incorrect in polite address — both خود and the verb take plural marking.
✅ شما خودتان تصمیم میگیرید.
shomâ khod-etân tasmim mi-girid.
You decide for yourself. (polite singular or plural)
