Persian scrambling can place an object, quantifier phrase, or adverbial before material that would precede it in neutral SOV order. Its pronunciation is overtly “high,” but its interpretation is not always calculated only from that surface position. When a moved phrase can receive a reading associated with its lower, argument position, syntacticians call the effect scope reconstruction.
The label belongs to an analysis, not to a visible Persian morpheme. Speakers directly judge meanings in context; theoretical accounts disagree about which movements reconstruct, which orders are base-generated, and how discourse structure constrains the result. The practical lesson is firmer: surface order creates strong scope preferences, while را, specificity, prosody, and clause boundaries can preserve or block alternative readings.
Surface scope, lower scope, and an honest diagnostic
Suppose a sentence contains an existential phrase “one/a report” and a distributive phrase “every manager.” Two readings are logically possible:
| Reading | Paraphrase | Notation |
|---|---|---|
| existential wide scope | there is one particular report that every manager signed | one > every |
| distributive wide scope | for every manager, there may be a different report | every > one |
Neutral order, object marking, and lexical clarification make the contrast easier:
هر مدیر یک گزارش جداگانه امضا کرد.
har modir yek gozâresh-e jodâgâne emzâ kard.
Each manager signed a separate report. (unambiguous distributive reading; reports differ)
یک گزارش مشخص را همهی مدیران امضا کردند.
yek gozâresh-e moshakhkhas râ hame-ye modirân emzâ kardand.
All the managers signed one specific report. (unambiguous existential-wide reading)
The second object appears before the universal subject, but the decisive evidence is not order alone: مشخص and را establish one discourse-identifiable report. A bare یک گزارش in neutral object position more readily varies with each manager.
What “reconstruction” claims
Consider a marked long-distance topic in which an object associated with an embedded predicate appears at the left edge:
یک مقاله را هر پژوهشگری گفت که خوانده است.
yek maqâle râ har pazhuheshgari goft ke khânde ast.
One article, every researcher said that they had read. (marked long-distance scrambling; most accessible reading: one article shared across researchers)
Some speakers, in a specially prepared distributive context, can also understand the article as varying with the researchers—as though یک مقاله were interpreted in its lower object position. That is the reconstruction reading. Other speakers strongly resist it, especially with را and a clear topic intonation. Published analyses of Persian consequently differ: some treat particular long-distance orders as scope-ambiguous, while more recent work emphasizes that ambiguity depends on the size and discourse type of the scrambling.
This variation must not be hidden behind a categorical rule. For editing, write the intended truth conditions:
هر پژوهشگری گفت که یک مقالهی متفاوت خوانده است.
har pazhuheshgari goft ke yek maqâle-ye motefâvet khânde ast.
Every researcher said that they had read a different article. (explicit lower/distributive reading)
همهی پژوهشگران گفتند که همان مقاله را خواندهاند.
hame-ye pazhuheshgarân goftand ke hamân maqâle râ khânde-and.
All the researchers said that they had read the same article. (explicit shared-object reading)
The marked sentence is useful for linguistic analysis; the paraphrases are better public prose.
Clause-internal scrambling is construction-specific
Within one clause, a را-marked object can move before the subject for topic or contrast. Specificity tends to give it wide scope and makes a low, nonspecific reading difficult.
این دو پیشنهاد را هر عضو هیئت باید جداگانه بررسی کند.
in do pishnehâd râ har ozv-e hey'at bâyad jodâgâne barrasi konad.
Each board member must examine these two proposals separately. (specific objects scope over the distributive subject)
By contrast, an indefinite close to the predicate naturally remains within the distributive domain:
هر عضو هیئت باید دو پیشنهاد انتخاب کند.
har ozv-e hey'at bâyad do pishnehâd entekhâb konad.
Each board member must select two proposals. (the selected pairs may differ)
Moving دو پیشنهاد leftward without را is possible only in a suitably contrastive discourse and does not automatically turn it into one shared pair. Conversely, adding را often signals discourse-linked specificity, so an apparent scope effect may come from referential status rather than movement alone.
Negation: prosody can compete with surface order
With همه and verbal negation, Persian permits readings that English learners often try to derive mechanically from order. The sentence below is genuinely unsafe without context:
همهی اعضای گروه گزارش را نخواندهاند.
hame-ye a'zâ-ye goruh gozâresh râ na-khânde-and.
Not all the group members have read the report. (usual reading; a collective ‘none read it’ reading is possible for some speakers in a supporting context)
Fronting the object does not by itself decide whether negation scopes over totality:
این گزارش را همهی اعضای گروه نخواندهاند.
in gozâresh râ hame-ye a'zâ-ye goruh na-khânde-and.
As for this report, not all the group members have read it. (usual reading; object topicalization does not eliminate contextual scope variation)
The “not all” reading is normally the easiest one. A collective “none” interpretation is reported for some speakers under a supporting context and prosodic contour, but it should not be treated as equally available in every variety. In writing, reconstructing an intended prosody is unreliable. Use بعضی ... نـ for a proper subset and هیچکدام ... نـ for zero.
بعضی از اعضای گروه هنوز این گزارش را نخواندهاند.
ba'zi az a'zâ-ye goruh hanuz in gozâresh râ na-khânde-and.
Some group members still have not read this report. (unambiguous not-all reading)
This practical system is developed on Scope of Negation, Quantifiers, and Modals.
Modal scope and displaced phrases
Modals introduce another operator. Compare a requirement applying to every person with a claim that one action must occur:
هر کارمند باید یک دورهی آموزشی بگذراند.
har kârmand bâyad yek dowre-ye âmuzeshi be-gozarânad.
Every employee must complete a training course. (courses may differ; obligation distributes)
همین دوره را باید همهی کارکنان بگذرانند.
hamin dowre râ bâyad hame-ye kârkonân be-gozarânand.
It is this course that all employees must complete. (specific course outside the distributive choice)
The fronted همین دوره را is referentially fixed, and contrastive همین reinforces surface-wide scope. A theory may represent its relation to the embedded object position by a lower copy, but the learner should not infer a freely available “possibly different course” reading.
Negating a modal creates a separate issue from scrambling: نباید prohibits, whereas لازم نیست cancels necessity. Movement of the object cannot reverse that lexical contrast.
Prosodic reconstruction is not visible in spelling
A fronted phrase pronounced as a detached topic tends to take wide discourse scope. A phrase with contrastive focus can answer a narrower question. Pauses, pitch accents, and the discourse question all affect judgments, but ordinary Persian spelling marks none of them reliably.
— هر داور چند مقاله بررسی کرد؟ — هر داور دو مقاله بررسی کرد؛ مقالهها برای هر داور فرق داشت.
— har dâvar chand maqâle barrasi kard? — har dâvar do maqâle barrasi kard; maqâle-hâ barâ-ye har dâvar farq dâsht.
— How many articles did each reviewer examine? — Each reviewer examined two; the articles differed for each reviewer. (academic workplace exchange; continuation fixes distributive scope)
The final clause is a scope diagnostic stronger than intuition about isolated word order.
Common Mistakes
1. Assuming the leftmost quantifier always has widest scope
❌ هر دانشجویی یک کتاب خواند همیشه یعنی همه همان کتاب را خواندند.
Incorrect — the indefinite can vary with each student; left-to-right order does not force one shared book.
✅ هر دانشجویی یک کتاب متفاوت برای نقد انتخاب کرد.
har dâneshjuyi yek ketâb-e motefâvet barâ-ye naqd entekhâb kard.
Each student chose a different book to review.
2. Assuming every scrambled phrase reconstructs
❌ یک پروندهی مشخص را هر کارشناس دید یعنی پروندهها میتوانند متفاوت باشند.
Incorrect — مشخص and را establish one specific file despite the distributive subject.
✅ یک پروندهی مشخص را هر سه کارشناس دیدند.
yek parvande-ye moshakhkhas râ har se kârshenâs didand.
All three experts saw one specific file.
3. Claiming every marked order has two readings
❌ هر جابهجایی در فارسی حتما دو تعبیر دامنهای دارد.
Incorrect — scope ambiguity is construction-specific and many scrambled phrases have one strongly preferred reading.
✅ دامنه به نوع کمیتنما، را، جایگاه و بافت بستگی دارد.
dâmane be now'-e kammiyat-namâ, râ, jâygâh va bâft bastegi dârad.
Scope depends on the type of quantifier, râ, position, and context. (academic metalinguistic statement)
4. Relying on inaudible stress in formal writing
❌ همهی داوطلبان پذیرفته نشدند پس خواننده حتما میفهمد چند نفر پذیرفته شدند.
Incorrect — without context or audible stress, the sentence does not specify a number and can invite competing readings.
✅ فقط بعضی از داوطلبان پذیرفته شدند.
faqat ba'zi az dâvtalabân pazirofte shodand.
Only some of the applicants were accepted.
Key Takeaways
- Reconstruction is a theoretical account of a lower-scope reading, not an overt Persian operation.
- Persian strongly prefers surface scope in many environments, but particular clause-internal and long-distance scrambling structures can show ambiguity for some speakers.
- را, specificity, topicality, clause boundaries, and prosody interact with order; no one factor predicts every judgment.
- Quantifier–negation and quantifier–modal relations should be paraphrased when truth conditions matter.
- Distinguish observed interpretations from the syntactic mechanism proposed to derive them.
