Persian را marks a direct object according to its discourse interpretation, not merely its grammatical role. At B2, the simple “definite objects take را” shortcut breaks down: a specific indefinite can take it, a relative clause can make a new referent uniquely identifiable, and an object inside an embedded clause receives را from its own predicate. Specificity, definiteness, presupposition, and topical persistence overlap, but no single one of them exhausts the distribution of را. Animacy encourages individuation but never replaces the discourse analysis.
A useful diagnostic is whether the speaker presents the object as discourse-linked or presupposed, identifiable, delimited, or intentionally selected. These cues can pull together or apart, and they must be evaluated inside the clause that selects the object—even when the noun phrase or sentence is structurally complex.
A multi-factor map
| Environment | Typical pattern | Main reason |
|---|---|---|
| specific indefinite | یک متخصص را میشناسم | speaker has a particular specialist in mind |
| nonspecific role or kind | متخصص استخدام میکنیم | the role, not one individual, is at issue |
| object head plus relative clause | گزارشی را که فرستادی خواندم | the relative identifies the object; را normally precedes the relative |
| embedded direct object | گفت که آن گزارش را خوانده | the embedded predicate licenses its own object marking |
| animate but nonspecific object | پرستار لازم داریم | animacy alone does not force را |
English articles divide a from the, but Persian ـی/یک and را answer different questions. An object can be indefinite for the listener yet specific for the speaker, so یک ... را is not contradictory.
Specific indefinites: new but intended
یک مترجم را میشناسم که در متون حقوقی تخصص دارد.
yek motarjem râ mi-shenâsam ke dar motun-e hoquqi takhassos dârad.
I know a translator who specializes in legal texts. (neutral; one particular translator intended)
برای این پروژه مترجم لازم داریم، اما هنوز کسی را انتخاب نکردهایم.
barâ-ye in porozhe motarjem lâzem dârim, ammâ hanuz kasi râ entekhâb na-karde-im.
We need a translator for this project, but we have not selected anyone yet. (neutral; nonspecific role, then a pronominal object under negation)
The first speaker could identify the translator and continue referring to that person. In the second sentence, bare مترجم names a position to be filled. The pronominal object کسی nevertheless takes را even under the nonspecific reading “anyone,” another reason not to reduce را to specificity alone. Human animacy makes a referent salient once chosen, but it does not turn a job description into a specific object.
دیروز مقالهای خواندم که دربارهی همین موضوع بود.
diruz maqâle-i khândam ke darbâre-ye hamin mowzu' bud.
Yesterday I read an article that was about this very topic. (neutral; a newly introduced indefinite, specificity not foregrounded)
دیروز مقالهای را خواندم که استاد قبلا معرفی کرده بود.
diruz maqâle-i râ khândam ke ostâd qablan mo'arrefi karde bud.
Yesterday I read a particular article that the professor had previously recommended. (neutral; specific indefinite)
Both examples are grammatical. را in the second guides the listener toward a particular intended article; it is not an obligatory translation of English an. See Specific Indefinites with ی plus را.
Objects modified by relative clauses
When a direct-object head is followed by a relative clause, standard Persian strongly favors placing را immediately after the head and before که: کتابی را که معرفی کردی خریدم. Corpus research on written Persian confirms this ordering tendency. The relative clause then modifies the head, while the matrix predicate still selects the whole noun phrase as its object.
گزارشی را که صبح فرستادی با دقت خواندم.
gozâresh-i râ ke sobh ferestâdi bâ deqqat khândam.
I carefully read the report that you sent this morning. (neutral written standard; را before the relative clause)
دانشجویی را که برای کارآموزی معرفی کرده بودید پذیرفتند.
dâneshju-yi râ ke barâ-ye kâr-âmuzi mo'arrefi karde budid paziroftand.
They accepted the student whom you had recommended for the internship. (formal-neutral; animate specific object)
In colloquial speech and informal writing, را/رو also occurs after a heavy relative clause. Many editors disfavor that late placement because it burdens processing; the reliable careful-prose pattern is head + را + که + relative clause + matrix verb.
Do not confuse the matrix را with the role left inside the relative. In گزارشی را که فرستادی خواندم, گزارش is the object of both خواندم and the gapped فرستادی, but only the matrix object is overtly followed by را. The invariant linker که is not a pronoun and never takes را itself.
Embedded objects belong to their own clause
Each finite predicate assigns roles inside its own clause. In مدیر گفت که یک وکیل را میشناسد, یک وکیل را is the object of embedded میشناسد, not of matrix گفت. Moving را across که or attaching it to the entire content clause destroys the analysis.
مدیر گفت که یک وکیل را برای بررسی قرارداد در نظر گرفته است.
modir goft ke yek vakil râ barâ-ye barrasi-ye qarârdâd dar nazar gerefte ast.
The manager said that she had a particular lawyer in mind to review the contract. (formal; specific object inside the complement)
فکر میکنم این نسخه را قبلا برای شما فرستادهام.
fekr mi-konam in noskhe râ qablan barâ-ye shomâ ferestâde-am.
I think I have sent you this copy before. (neutral; که omitted, embedded را unchanged)
Omitting conversational که does not promote the object into the matrix clause. Verb meaning still shows that این نسخه را belongs with فرستادهام, not فکر میکنم. The Complementizer که page explains this optional boundary marker.
Animacy, affectedness, and discourse persistence
Animacy raises the likelihood that a referent is tracked as an individual, but را is not an animate-object marker. An inanimate demonstrative requires it as a direct object; an animate noun denoting an open role can remain bare.
برای شیفت شب پرستار استخدام میکنیم.
barâ-ye shift-e shab parastâr estekhdâm mi-konim.
We are hiring a nurse for the night shift. (neutral; nonspecific animate role)
این دستگاه قدیمی را هنوز هر روز به کار میبریم.
in dastgâh-e qadimi râ hanuz har ruz be kâr mi-barim.
We still use this old device every day. (neutral; identifiable inanimate object)
Affectedness and topicality reinforce object marking in borderline cases: a fully affected or repeatedly discussed object is easier to construe as delimited. They are influences, not separate mechanical rules. Persian speakers can intentionally shift construal by adding or omitting را.
Scope under negation
Compare یک پزشک را پیدا نکردم and هیچ پزشکی پیدا نکردم. The first readily means that there was a particular doctor whom I failed to find; the second denies finding any doctor. Persian uses the noun phrase and را together to guide scope.
یک پرونده را هنوز پیدا نکردهام؛ همان پروندهی مربوط به شکایت دیروز.
yek parvande râ hanuz peydâ na-karde-am; hamân parvande-ye marbut be shekâyat-e diruz.
There is one file I still have not found—the one concerning yesterday's complaint. (specific indefinite under negation)
هیچ پروندهای دربارهی آن شکایت پیدا نکردهام.
hich parvande-i darbâre-ye ân shekâyat peydâ na-karde-am.
I have not found any file concerning that complaint. (negative nonspecific object)
Common Mistakes
1. Marking the same matrix object twice around a relative
❌ گزارشی را که صبح برای مدیر فرستادی را خواندم.
Incorrect — the matrix object receives one را; careful prose places it after the head, before the heavy relative clause.
✅ گزارشی را که صبح برای مدیر فرستادی خواندم.
gozâresh-i râ ke sobh barâ-ye modir ferestâdi khândam.
I read the report that you sent to the manager this morning. (written standard)
2. Mixing direct-object را with a prepositional complement
❌ برای بخش فروش به یک کارشناس را نیاز داریم.
Incorrect — نیاز داشتن selects its complement with به, so that noun phrase is not also marked as a direct object with را.
✅ برای بخش فروش به یک کارشناس باتجربه نیاز داریم.
barâ-ye bakhsh-e forush be yek kârshenâs-e bâ-tajrobe niyâz dârim.
We need an experienced specialist for the sales department.
3. Marking a whole content clause with را
❌ مدیر را که گزارش آماده است گفت.
Incorrect — the content clause is introduced by که; را cannot turn the matrix subject مدیر into its object.
✅ مدیر گفت که گزارش آماده است.
modir goft ke gozâresh âmâde ast.
The manager said that the report was ready.
4. Assuming every indefinite rejects را
❌ یک دوستم میشناسم که میتواند کمکت کند.
Incorrect in the intended specific-object reading — دوست is the identifiable object of میشناسم and needs را; the possessive form also does not combine with یک this way.
✅ دوستی را میشناسم که میتواند کمکت کند.
dusti râ mi-shenâsam ke mi-tavânad komak-at konad.
I know a friend who can help you. (specific indefinite)
Key Takeaways
- را responds to interacting factors such as presupposition, specificity, identifiability, delimitation, and discourse persistence—not simply definiteness or animacy.
- A specific indefinite can take را even though the listener has not previously identified it.
- Before a restrictive relative clause, careful standard Persian prefers head + را + که.
- An embedded object's marking is licensed by its own predicate, whether or not the complementizer is pronounced.
- Animacy and affectedness influence construal but never replace clause-by-clause syntactic analysis.
