Manner Phrases with به طور

The productive frame به‌طورِ + complement turns a quality or category into an adverbial perspective or manner: به‌طور کلی “overall/generally,” به‌طور جدی “seriously,” and به‌طور رسمی “officially.” It is especially common in edited, administrative, and academic Persian because it states explicitly how the writer wants an event or proposition to be understood.

This frame is not a mechanical equivalent of English -ly. Iranian Persian often prefers a shorter adjective, a lexical adverb, or a different prepositional phrase in ordinary speech. Learning به‌طورِ therefore involves two decisions: whether the intended meaning is a perspective or manner, and whether the register benefits from the expanded formal wording.

The structure: a noun phrase with ezafe

طور is a noun meaning “way/manner.” In به‌طورِ کلی, the preposition به introduces it and an unwritten ezafe vowel links طور to its complement. Standard spacing writes به‌طور with a zero-width non-joiner; the phrase is pronounced be-towr-e X, not be-towr X.

The complement does not agree with a subject or object. Persian adjectives do not inflect for gender or number here. What matters is the semantic relation: the complement must describe a recognized way, status, scale, or perspective from which the clause can be evaluated.

به‌طور کلی، کیفیت خدمات بهتر شده است.

be-towr-e kolli, keyfiyyat-e khedmât behtar shode ast.

Overall, the quality of the services has improved. (formal; viewpoint over the whole proposition)

کمیته شکایت‌ها را به‌طور جدی بررسی خواهد کرد.

komite shekâyat-hâ râ be-towr-e jeddi barrasi khâhad kard.

The committee will investigate the complaints seriously. (formal/administrative; event manner)

نتیجه‌ی انتخابات فردا به‌طور رسمی اعلام می‌شود.

natije-ye entekhâbât fardâ be-towr-e rasmi e'lâm mi-shavad.

The election result will be officially announced tomorrow. (formal; official status)

💡
The ezafe after طور is structural, even though ordinary Persian script does not show it. Hear and produce the frame as one unit: be-towr-e kolli, be-towr-e rasmi, be-towr-e mostaqim.

Clause perspective versus event manner

At the beginning of a clause, به‌طور کلی normally comments on the proposition as a whole: it means “viewed as a whole” or “in general,” while allowing exceptions. A comma is customary in careful prose when this framing phrase is detached. Closer to the predicate, phrases such as به‌طور جدی، رسمی، مستقیم، موقت characterize the action, relation, or resulting status.

به‌طور کلی، کارکنان از برنامه‌ی جدید راضی‌اند؛ چند مشکل فنی هنوز باقی مانده است.

be-towr-e kolli, kârkonân az barnâme-ye jadid râzi-and; chand moshkel-e fanni hanuz bâqi mânde ast.

Overall, the staff are satisfied with the new program; a few technical problems remain. (formal; proposition-level assessment)

پژوهشگران با شرکت‌کنندگان به‌طور مستقیم مصاحبه کردند.

pazhuheshgarân bâ sherkat-konandegân be-towr-e mostaqim mosâhebe kardand.

The researchers interviewed the participants directly. (academic; direct procedure rather than an intermediary)

سامانه به‌طور موقت از دسترس خارج شده است.

sâmâne be-towr-e movaqqat az dastres khârej shode ast.

The system is temporarily unavailable. (formal service notice; temporary status)

Position follows scope. A broad frame precedes the clause; a manner phrase tends to occur after the subject and time frame and near the final predicate, often after a specific object. Persian order remains flexible, so discourse context can motivate another position. See Adverb Placement in Neutral Clauses for the larger ordering system.

Adjective and noun complements

Most productive examples take an adjective: کلی، جدی، رسمی، مستقیم، کامل، موقت، مستقل. The construction presents that property as a manner or status rather than attributing it directly to a noun. Certain nouns also form conventional complements, especially when they name a standard of measurement. به‌طور میانگین means “on average,” not “in an average manner.”

هر دانشجو به‌طور میانگین سه ساعت برای این تمرین وقت گذاشت.

har dâneshju be-towr-e miyângin se sâ'at barâ-ye in tamrin vaqt gozâsht.

Each student spent three hours on this exercise on average. (academic; noun complement naming a statistical standard)

Productivity is constrained by idiom. A dictionary adjective does not automatically yield a natural به‌طورِ X phrase. به‌طور سریع is grammatically interpretable, but everyday Persian almost always chooses سریع “quickly.” Corpus familiarity and register, not a single conversion rule, determine which combinations sound established.

Formal phrase versus concise alternative

The expanded form is useful when contrast, official status, or nominal style matters. Concise alternatives are often more natural in conversation and can also improve formal prose when no ambiguity results.

Expanded formConcise alternativeTypical difference
به‌طور کلیدر کل / کلاًدر کل is neutral; کلاً is common in speech
به‌طور جدیجدیshort form is preferred in direct everyday instructions
به‌طور رسمیرسماًboth are standard; expanded form can sound more institutional
به‌طور کاملکاملاًboth express completeness; concise form is frequent in all registers

در کل، سفر خوبی بود؛ فقط هوا سرد بود.

dar koll, safar-e khubi bud; faqat havâ sard bud.

Overall, it was a good trip; only the weather was cold. (neutral conversation; concise alternative)

این موضوع را جدی بگیر و امروز با پزشک تماس بگیر.

in mowzu' râ jeddi be-gir va emruz bâ pezeshk tamâs be-gir.

Take this seriously and call the doctor today. (neutral conversation; concise manner adjective)

وزارتخانه این تغییر را رسما تأیید کرد.

vezâratkhâne in taghyir râ rasman ta'yid kard.

The ministry officially confirmed this change. (formal; concise lexicalized adverb)

The ـاً alternative is available only for established borrowed adverbs, not as a productive ending on any Persian adjective. Its spelling and pronunciation are treated on Adverbs in اً.

💡
Choose به‌طورِ X when the phrase names an explicit analytical perspective, procedure, or institutional status. In direct conversation, test the bare adjective or an established adverb first.

Common Mistakes

1. Joining the preposition as an ordinary letter sequence

❌ بطور کلی نتیجه خوب بود.

Incorrect standard spacing — write the productive phrase به‌طور with به and a ZWNJ.

✅ به‌طور کلی، نتیجه‌ی آزمایش امیدوارکننده بود.

be-towr-e kolli, natije-ye âzmâyesh omidvâr-konande bud.

Overall, the test result was promising.

2. Adding به directly to a manner adjective

❌ لطفا به سریع جواب بده.

Incorrect — به does not directly turn سریع into an adverb; use bare سریع here.

✅ لطفا سریع جواب بده؛ منتظرم.

lotfan sari' javâb be-dah; montazer-am.

Please answer quickly; I'm waiting.

3. Confusing general perspective with completeness

❌ در را به‌طور کلی بستم.

Incorrect for ‘I closed the door completely’ — کلی frames a general assessment, not the degree of closing.

✅ پیش از رفتن در را کاملا بستم.

pish az raftan dar râ kâmelan bastam.

Before leaving, I closed the door completely.

4. Omitting the complement after به‌طور

❌ گزارش به‌طور منتشر شد.

Incomplete — طور requires an ezafe-linked complement that specifies the manner or status.

✅ گزارش پس از جلسه به‌طور عمومی منتشر شد.

gozâresh pas az jalase be-towr-e omumi montasher shod.

The report was released publicly after the meeting.

Key Takeaways

  • The frame is به‌طورِ + complement, with obligatory spoken ezafe after طور and standard ZWNJ in به‌طور.
  • Clause-initial به‌طور کلی sets a general perspective; phrases nearer the predicate usually describe manner, procedure, or status.
  • Adjective complements are productive within conventional limits; nouns occur in established phrases such as به‌طور میانگین.
  • The frame is characteristic of formal and academic prose. Concise در کل، جدی، رسماً، کاملاً are often preferable, especially in conversation.
