Esperanto does not reduce all agreement to jes. You can agree with a person (mi konsentas kun vi), share an opinion (mi samopinias), judge a statement correct (vi pravas), or accept a proposal (mi akceptas la proponon). Disagreement likewise ranges from a neutral difference of view to active opposition.
The central skill is to identify what aligns: people, opinions, facts, or decisions. Once that relation is clear, the fixed frame and its variable slots become predictable. This also helps you disagree without making the other person's character the topic.
Jes confirms; konsenti states agreement
Jes confirms a positive question or assertion. It can accept a proposal in context, but it does not name the relationship of agreement as explicitly as konsenti.
Ĉu la vendejo ankoraŭ estas malfermita? — Jes, ĝis la oka.
Is the shop still open? — Yes, until eight.
Ĉu ni prokrastu la voĉdonon ĝis morgaŭ? — Jes, mi konsentas.
Shall we postpone the vote until tomorrow? — Yes, I agree.
Use konsenti kun + person for the person whose position you share and konsenti pri + topic for the matter. The two slots can occur together.
I agree with you about the goal, but not about the proposed method.
Use konsenti, ke + clause when you state the proposition itself:
Ni ĉiuj konsentas, ke la nuna horaro estas tro komplika.
We all agree that the current schedule is too complicated.
The verb can also express consent to doing something: Ŝi konsentis partopreni. Context distinguishes intellectual agreement from willingness or permission.
Post longa diskuto ŝi konsentis prezenti la komunan raporton.
After a long discussion, she agreed to present the joint report.
Shared opinion versus being right
Samopinii means “have the same opinion.” It is especially useful when the subject is a judgment or preference rather than a provable fact. It can stand alone or take kun and pri.
Pri la nova emblemo mi samopinias kun la plej multaj membroj.
Regarding the new logo, I share the opinion of most members.
Pravi means “be right.” Vi pravas evaluates someone's claim as correct; Tio estas ĝusta evaluates the content directly. Agreement and correctness can come apart: two people may agree and both be mistaken.
You're right: the last bus leaves at ten, not eleven.
We agreed about the date, but later learned that we were both wrong.
Short confirmations include ĝuste “exactly/correct,” tute prave “quite right,” and ankaŭ mi tiel pensas “I think so too.” Tute prave evaluates correctness; ankaŭ mi tiel pensas explicitly aligns opinions.
The problem isn't the price but the lack of time. — Exactly.
Accepting is not always agreeing
Akcepti means accept. You can accept a proposal, invitation, condition, or outcome without believing it ideal. Aprobi gives approval, often in an institutional decision. Subteni means support. These actions are stronger or more specific than merely sharing an opinion.
I do not consider the compromise perfect; nevertheless, I accept it.
The committee approved the budget by eight votes to two.
This distinction matters in meetings. Mi konsentas, ke la problemo ekzistas does not necessarily mean Mi aprobas vian solvon. State the exact scope instead of letting a polite jes be interpreted as full endorsement.
Neutral and softened disagreement
The neutral core is Mi ne konsentas. Add kun vi, pri tio, or a ke-clause as needed. It rejects a position without claiming bad motives.
I disagree with that assessment; the data show a more mixed picture.
For a lower-friction response, use Mi vidas la aferon alimaniere, Mi ne estas konvinkita, or Mi dubas, ĉu …. These locate the disagreement in your analysis or degree of certainty.
Mi vidas la aferon iom alimaniere: la unua paŝo devus esti publika konsulto.
I see the matter somewhat differently: the first step should be a public consultation.
Mi dubas, ĉu tiu ŝanĝo vere reduktos la kostojn.
I doubt whether that change will really reduce the costs.
Mi kontraŭas + object means active opposition, not merely a different view. It is appropriate for policies, proposals, or actions that you intend to resist.
I oppose the proposal because it would remove essential services from the neighborhood.
Vi malpravas is grammatically direct and sometimes necessary, but it can sound confrontational. If only one claim is wrong, Tiu cifero ne estas ĝusta or La fonto ne subtenas tiun konkludon keeps the focus on evidence. The latter is especially useful (academic) or (formal) language.
The report does not say that the project failed; it says that the results are not yet measurable.
Responding to negative statements and questions
Short jes and ne can become ambiguous after a negative question because languages organize such answers differently. If someone asks Ĉu vi ne venos?, a bare answer may be interpreted through the listener's first language.
Don't you support the proposal? — No, I do not support it in its current form.
The same explicitness helps when disagreeing with a negative claim. Mi konsentas could align with the whole negative proposition, while Jes may merely acknowledge that you heard it. State the content: Ankaŭ mi opinias, ke la plano ne funkcios. The dedicated page on jes and ne in answers gives the full answer system.
Give a reason proportional to the setting
Agreement needs no proof in a casual preference—Ankaŭ mi ŝatas tiun kanton is enough. A policy, factual claim, or research conclusion needs a reason.
I disagree with that conclusion because the survey excluded rural participants.
These frames mark evidential responsibility. Laŭ mia sperto limits a claim to experience; it does not turn experience into universal proof. In (academic) discussion, distinguish la rezultoj sugestas from the stronger la rezultoj pruvas. This makes disagreement about evidence more productive than a contest of emphatic adverbs.
Partial agreement and concession
Real discussion often needs more than yes or no. Use parte, ĝis certa grado, or a frame with sed/tamen to preserve the point you accept before naming the limit.
I partly agree: the system is fast, but it is not accessible to everyone.
You are right about the diagnosis; however, I do not agree with the proposed treatment.
The order matters pragmatically. Jes, sed … first acknowledges common ground. It can still sound dismissive if jes is purely ceremonial and the speaker ignores the point. A specific acknowledgment—Vi pravas pri la kosto—is more credible.
Ĉu do ni ĉiuj konsentas?
So do we all agree? — On the goal, yes; on the deadline, not yet.
This exchange demonstrates ellipsis: the repeated ni konsentas is recoverable. The pri-phrases make the changing scope explicit.
Register and attested variation
Konsenti, samopinii, and pravi are transparent, established forms across ordinary speech and writing. Corpus examples strongly attest konsenti kun iu, vi pravas, and qualified disagreement. Mi estas de akordo occurs under influence from several European languages, but it is not the clearest international default. Mi konsentas communicates the relation with a single ordinary verb.
In (formal) minutes, write what was decided: La komitato unuanime aprobis la proponon. In (academic) discussion, identify evidence and scope: La rezultoj parte subtenas tiun interpreton. In (informal) conversation, ĝuste, eble, mi ne kredas, and intonation carry more of the interaction. Do not present the shortest forms as logically vague when their conversational context supplies the proposition.
Common Mistakes
1. Building an English-style auxiliary phrase instead of using the verb.
❌ Mi faras konsenti kun vi.
Incorrect: Esperanto does not build emphatic ‘do agree’ with fari plus an infinitive.
✅ Mi konsentas kun vi.
I agree with you.
2. Omitting kun before the person.
❌ Mi konsentas vi pri la nova plano.
Incorrect: the aligned person needs kun in this frame.
✅ Mi konsentas kun vi pri la nova plano.
I agree with you about the new plan.
3. Treating shared opinion as proof of correctness.
❌ Ni samopinias, do ni certe pravas.
Faulty inference: agreement does not guarantee correctness.
We agree, but let's nevertheless check the facts.
4. Adding a preposition after transitive kontraŭi.
❌ Mi kontraŭas al tiu propono.
Incorrect: kontraŭi takes the opposed proposal as a direct object.
✅ Mi kontraŭas tiun proponon.
I oppose that proposal.
