Academic Prose

Strong academic Esperanto is precise without pretending that complexity proves seriousness. It defines terms, separates evidence from inference, attributes earlier work, exposes method and agency, and connects claims explicitly. Specialist terminology belongs to each field; the transferable skill is building an argument that readers from different scholarly traditions can follow.

English academic prose often tolerates long noun stacks, extensive passives, and strings of abstract nominalizations. Copying those habits can produce grammatical Esperanto that is unnecessarily hard to parse. Esperanto's productive morphology is most effective when it makes structure visible, not when it compresses every clause into one word.

State the argument architecture

Readers should know what question a section answers and how each paragraph advances it. Common moves are: define the object, identify a gap, state a claim, give evidence, address a limitation, and draw a bounded conclusion.

Ĉi tiu studo demandas, ĉu regula retrosciigo plibonigas la retenon de nova vortprovizo.

This study asks whether regular feedback improves retention of new vocabulary.

Unue ni prezentas la metodon; poste ni komparas la du grupojn; fine ni diskutas la limojn de la eksperimento.

First we present the method; then we compare the two groups; finally we discuss the limitations of the experiment.

This signposting is not childish. It prevents section order from being carried only by layout or by assumptions imported from one national academic tradition.

An abstract and introduction should not promise more than the study delivers. If the data show association, do not announce causation. If the sample covers one institution, name that boundary before generalizing.

Define terms operationally

A useful definition gives the meaning used in this text and, when necessary, the criterion for recognizing instances. The frame En ĉi tiu artikolo, X signifas … makes local scope explicit.

En ĉi tiu artikolo, ‘aktiva partopreno’ signifas almenaŭ unu parolaĵon aŭ skriban kontribuon dum ĉiu seminario.

In this article, ‘active participation’ means at least one spoken or written contribution during each seminar.

Avoid the English learner pattern “X is when …” if the complement is not a matching category. Name the class first or use okazas kiam.

Termika ekspansio estas pliiĝo de la dimensioj de materialo pro altiĝo de temperaturo.

Thermal expansion is an increase in a material's dimensions due to a rise in temperature.

A definition can be stipulative—chosen for the study—or report established disciplinary usage. Say which. Quotation marks, italics, capitalization, and citation layout are often house style rather than grammar.

Calibrate claims and evidence

Academic stance is not vague hedging. It matches verbal strength to evidence:

ExpressionTypical commitment
la datumoj montras, kethe evidence directly supports the proposition
la rezultoj sugestas, kea plausible interpretation, not final proof
eblas konkludi, kean inference is available under stated assumptions
ni ne povas ekskludi, kean alternative remains possible

La rezultoj sugestas modestan efikon, sed la malgranda specimeno ne permesas firman konkludon.

The results suggest a modest effect, but the small sample does not permit a firm conclusion.

Ni ne povas ekskludi, ke la observita diferenco parte devenas de antaŭa sperto.

We cannot exclude that the observed difference partly stems from prior experience.

This cautious claim is informative because it names both the current pattern and the limitation. Repeating eble everywhere without specifying why merely weakens prose.

💡
Choose the claim verb after asking what the method licenses: montras, sugestas, kongruas kun, and ne ekskludas are not ornamental synonyms.

Attribute sources and distinguish voices

Use laŭ + source, X argumentas, ke …, X raportas …, or antaŭaj studoj trovis …. The reporting verb tells readers how the cited author presents the information.

Laŭ la metaanalizo de Chen kaj Kumar, la averaĝa efiko estas malgranda sed konsekvenca.

According to the meta-analysis by Chen and Kumar, the average effect is small but consistent.

La aŭtoroj argumentas, ke la modelo klarigas la ĉefan tendencon, sed ili ne asertas, ke ĝi antaŭdiras ĉiun individuan kazon.

The authors argue that the model explains the main trend, but they do not claim that it predicts every individual case.

Do not use laŭ to smuggle the current writer's inference into another source. Close the attribution boundary, then state your interpretation: La aŭtoroj raportas X. Tio laŭ nia interpreto sugestas Y.

Citation form—author–date, numbered notes, bibliography punctuation—is house style. Grammar still determines agreement, case, and clause structure inside citations and discussion.

Describe method and agency honestly

Active first person is often the clearest method style: Ni mezuris …, Ni elektis …, Ni ekskludis …. It identifies who made a methodological decision. The impersonal oni suits a general procedure or an actor irrelevant to the point. A passive backgrounds the agent and foregrounds the material or result.

Ni hazarde dividis la 120 partoprenantojn en du egale grandajn grupojn kaj mezuris ilian progreson post ses semajnoj.

We randomly divided the 120 participants into two equally large groups and measured their progress after six weeks.

En la dua fazo, la respondoj estis anonimigitaj antaŭ la statistika analizo.

In the second phase, the responses were anonymized before the statistical analysis.

The passive is useful here because the procedural state of the responses matters more than the technician. It becomes evasive when the hidden agent made a contestable decision.

Ni forigis tri ekstremajn valorojn laŭ la kriterio antaŭe difinita.

We removed three extreme values according to the previously defined criterion.

Compare Tri valoroj estis forigitaj—which leaves readers asking who decided and why. No universal rule bans passive or first person; transparent responsibility determines the choice. See stance and evidential responsibility.

Unpack English noun stacks

English can place several nouns before a head: “student motivation survey response analysis.” An Esperanto calque may conceal all internal relations. Identify the semantic head, then use compounds only for stable terms and phrases for new relations.

Densa paŭsaĵo: La studentmotivacia enketrespondanalizo montris diferencon inter la grupoj.

Dense calque: The student-motivation survey-response analysis showed a difference between the groups.

Klara revizio: La analizo de la respondoj al la enketo pri studenta motiviĝo montris diferencon inter la grupoj.

Clear revision: The analysis of responses to the survey on student motivation showed a difference between the groups.

The revision is longer in characters but faster to parse because de, al, and pri state the relations. If motivienketo becomes a repeatedly defined technical term, a transparent compound can then improve precision.

Nominalization has the same tradeoff. Mezurado usefully names a recurring procedure. But a chain such as la efektivigo de la taksado de la plibonigo hides actors and time. A clause—ni taksis, ĉu la rezultoj pliboniĝis—often restores them.

Ni taksis, ĉu la partoprenantoj pli rapide rekonis la celvortojn post la ekzercado.

We assessed whether participants recognized the target words faster after the practice.

Connect logic explicitly

Use connectors according to relation: ĉar gives cause, tial/sekve result, tamen concession or counterexpectation, kontraste comparison, krome addition, and alivorte reformulation. A connector cannot repair a missing premise.

La unua grupo progresis pli rapide. Tamen la diferenco malaperis en la posta testo; sekve, la avantaĝo eble estis provizora.

The first group progressed faster. However, the difference disappeared in the follow-up test; consequently, the advantage may have been temporary.

Contrastive paragraph pair:

Malforta ligo: La metodo estis nova. Tamen la specimeno estis malgranda. Tial la rezultoj estis interesaj.

Weakly connected version: The method was new. However, the sample was small. Therefore, the results were interesting.

Reviziita ligo: La nova metodo liveris interesan komencan rezulton; tamen, pro la malgranda specimeno, necesas konfirmi ĝin per pli vasta studo.

Revised version: The new method produced an interesting preliminary result; however, because of the small sample, it must be confirmed by a larger study.

The revised paragraph states why sample size limits the inference. Connector choice now reflects actual logic.

Edit the mini-abstract, not just its vocabulary

Troŝarĝita malneto: Per la efektivigo de kompara ekzamenado estis farita la determinado de la influo de ĉiutaga ekzercado sur vortmemorado.

Overloaded draft: Through the implementation of comparative examination, a determination was made of the influence of daily practice on word recall.

Redaktita resumo: Ni komparis du grupojn por esplori la efikon de ĉiutaga ekzercado sur la memorado de vortoj. Post kvar semajnoj la ekzercinta grupo memoris pli da vortoj, sed la diferenco estis malgranda. La rezultoj sugestas utilon, kiun pli granda studo devas konfirmi.

Edited abstract: We compared two groups to investigate the effect of daily practice on word recall. After four weeks, the practicing group remembered more words, but the difference was small. The results suggest a benefit that a larger study must confirm.

The revision restores agent, action, comparison, result, magnitude, and limitation. It is scholarly because it is accountable, not because it contains more Latin-looking nouns.

Maintain reference across a paragraph

Academic cohesion depends on more than connectors. Each referring expression must let the reader recover exactly what is being discussed. Tiu rezulto should point to one stated result; ĉi tiu interpreto should name an interpretation rather than a whole preceding page. When two studies, groups, or models are active, repeat a short noun instead of relying on ambiguous ĝi or ili.

La unua modelo antaŭdiris la averaĝan rezulton pli precize, dum la dua pli bone klarigis la individuajn diferencojn. Tiu dua avantaĝo tamen malaperis post la aldono de la kontrola variablo.

The first model predicted the mean result more accurately, while the second explained the individual differences better. That second advantage, however, disappeared after the control variable was added.

The phrase tiu dua avantaĝo identifies the exact proposition carried forward. A bare tio could refer to the second model, its explanatory success, or the whole contrast.

Use paragraph openings to connect, not merely to announce. Kontraste kun la unua eksperimento … states the comparison basis. Por testi tiun klarigon … turns the previous interpretation into the next method. These expressions create a chain of questions and answers.

La korelacio sola ne montras kaŭzon. Por testi la kaŭzan klarigon, ni efektivigis duan eksperimenton kun hazarda grupigo.

The correlation alone does not show causation. To test the causal explanation, we conducted a second experiment with random assignment.

Respect disciplinary convention without disguising it as grammar

Fields differ in whether they prefer first person, how they format definitions, and how much methodological detail belongs in an abstract. Journals also impose citation systems and terminology lists. These requirements can be binding for submission, but they are not universal Esperanto grammar.

When a house guide demands a passive or forbids an abbreviation, follow it for that publication and describe it honestly as editorial policy. When no guide decides, choose the form that exposes evidence, agency, and logical scope most clearly. This distinction prevents local custom from becoming a supposed language-wide prohibition.

💡
During revision, underline every tio, ĝi, and passive verb. Keep each one only if its referent or relevant agent remains immediately recoverable.

Common Mistakes

1. Importing a false internationalism.

❌ La aktualaj mezuroj estis pli grandaj ol la teoriaj valoroj.

Incorrect if actual measurements are meant: aktuala means current or topical.

✅ La efektivaj mezuroj estis pli grandaj ol la teoriaj valoroj.

The actual measurements were greater than the theoretical values.

2. Hiding a methodological decision in a passive.

❌ Tri nekonvenaj rezultoj estis forigitaj sen antaŭe difinita kriterio.

Methodologically defective: the agent and decision rule are concealed.

✅ Ni forigis tri rezultojn laŭ la kriterio difinita antaŭ la analizo.

We removed three results according to the criterion defined before the analysis.

3. Treating a suggestive result as proof.

❌ La malgranda observa studo definitive pruvas la kaŭzon.

Incorrect inference: this design and scale cannot establish a definitive cause.

✅ La malgranda observa studo sugestas hipotezon pri la ebla kaŭzo.

The small observational study suggests a hypothesis about the possible cause.

4. Reproducing an English noun stack without clear relations.

❌ Ni reviziis la projekto-partoprenantoj-datumoj-kolekto-planon.

Incorrect: the internal noun and plural endings have been copied into a malformed compound.

✅ Ni reviziis la planon por kolekti datumojn de la projektaj partoprenantoj.

We revised the plan for collecting data from the project participants.

Key Takeaways

  • Academic authority comes from explicit method, evidence, attribution, and inferential limits.
  • Define terms operationally and choose claim verbs according to evidential strength.
  • Use active, impersonal, and passive presentation according to agency—not a blanket ban on first person.
  • Prefer transparent compounds and nominalizations; unpack new or multi-layered relations into clauses and phrases.
