Tamen means “nevertheless,” “even so,” or concessive “still.” It points back to an obstacle, expectation, or contrary fact and says that the new proposition remains true despite it. Unlike sed, tamen is an adverbial particle rather than a coordinating conjunction. It can therefore appear at several positions within its clause and can combine naturally with sed, kaj, kvankam, or malgraŭ.
The core meaning: despite that
The previous context supplies something that might have prevented or contradicted the new event. Tamen explicitly cancels that expectation.
Forte pluvis. Ni tamen promenis ĝis la lago.
It was raining heavily. Nevertheless, we walked to the lake.
La hotelo estis multekosta; tamen ĉiuj ĉambroj estis okupitaj.
The hotel was expensive; nevertheless, every room was occupied.
Mi konis neniun ĉe la festo, sed mi tamen bone amuziĝis.
I didn't know anyone at the party, but I nevertheless had a good time.
In each case, the first proposition creates an expectation: perhaps no walk, fewer guests, or an unpleasant evening. Tamen presents the outcome that holds in spite of it.
The obstacle need not be in the immediately preceding sentence if it is clear from the situation:
— La lasta buso jam foriris. — Mi tamen provos atingi la stacion piede.
— The last bus has already left. — Even so, I'll try to reach the station on foot.
Position inside the clause
As an adverbial element, tamen is movable. Three positions are especially common:
| Position | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| clause-initial | Tamen ni daŭrigis. | strong transition from the previous statement |
| after the subject | Ni tamen daŭrigis. | integrated, neutral concessive focus |
| after a coordinator | sed ni tamen daŭrigis | reinforced contrast |
La vojo estis longa. Tamen ni atingis la vilaĝon antaŭ noktiĝo.
The road was long. Nevertheless, we reached the village before nightfall.
La vojo estis longa, sed ni tamen atingis la vilaĝon antaŭ noktiĝo.
The road was long, but we nevertheless reached the village before nightfall.
La vojo estis longa, kaj tamen neniu plendis.
The road was long, and yet nobody complained.
The word normally sits near the proposition whose validity is surprising. Moving it late can give it narrow rhetorical emphasis, but learners should prefer the clear initial or post-subject positions.
Tamen and sed are different word classes
Sed stands at the boundary and coordinates two contrasting units. Tamen belongs inside the second proposition and refers back to the obstacle.
La komputilo estas malnova, sed ĝi ankoraŭ funkcias.
The computer is old, but it still works.
La komputilo estas malnova. Ĝi tamen funkcias fidinde.
The computer is old. Nevertheless, it works reliably.
La komputilo estas malnova, sed ĝi tamen funkcias fidinde.
The computer is old, but it nevertheless works reliably.
The third sentence is not redundant in a faulty sense. Sed marks coordination and contrast; tamen intensifies the idea that the result persists despite the obstacle. PMEG describes tamen as optional when sed already makes the contrast clear.
Sentence-initial tamen can itself link closely to the preceding sentence and function much like English however:
La propono kostos pli ol ni planis. Tamen ĝi solvus la problemon por multaj jaroj.
The proposal will cost more than we planned. However, it would solve the problem for many years.
This is established standard usage. Grammatically, though, tamen remains adverb-like and can move; sed cannot freely move away from the boundary before its second unit. See Sed: Contrast.
With kvankam
Kvankam introduces the subordinate clause that names the obstacle. Tamen can resume that obstacle in the main clause.
Kvankam mi estis laca, mi finis la raporton.
Although I was tired, I finished the report.
Kvankam mi estis laca, mi tamen finis la raporton.
Although I was tired, I nevertheless finished the report.
Both are correct. The second makes the concessive relation especially explicit. English style often rejects although … but, but Esperanto kvankam … tamen is structurally coherent: kvankam subordinates the obstacle; tamen comments on the main clause.
Kvankam la prezo altiĝis, la nombro de abonantoj tamen kreskis.
Although the price rose, the number of subscribers nevertheless grew.
In the following sentence, kvankam introduces the subordinate obstacle; tamen only resumes that obstacle in the main clause. Tamen alone cannot do the subordinating work:
Kvankam ŝi ne havis multe da tempo, ŝi tamen helpis nin.
Although she did not have much time, she nevertheless helped us.
The concession clauses page covers kvankam, eĉ se, and related subordinators in depth.
With malgraŭ
Malgraŭ is a preposition introducing a noun phrase, not a finite clause. Tamen may appear in the main clause to resume the concessive relation.
Malgraŭ la forta vento, la pramo tamen ekveturis ĝustatempe.
Despite the strong wind, the ferry nevertheless departed on time.
Malgraŭ pluraj teknikaj problemoj, la teamo finis la laboron.
Despite several technical problems, the team finished the work.
Again, tamen is optional when malgraŭ already supplies the relation. Add it for emphasis or to help a reader recover the main-clause turn after a long concessive phrase.
Tense and mood remain independent
Tamen has no control over the verb ending. The new clause selects a tense or mood according to its own time and status.
Hieraŭ ŝi malsanis; tamen ŝi venos morgaŭ, se ŝi resaniĝos.
She was ill yesterday; nevertheless, she will come tomorrow if she recovers.
La plano estas riska. Ni tamen provu ĝin.
The plan is risky. Nevertheless, let's try it.
Past malsanis, future venos, and volitive provu reflect their own meanings. Do not mechanically align tense across the discourse, and do not use conditional -us merely because English reported speech contains would.
Li diris, ke li estas okupita, sed ke li tamen venos.
He said that he was busy but that he would nevertheless come.
Both subordinate clauses retain the viewpoint of what he said: present estas, future venos. Repeating ke keeps both claims within the report.
Tamen is not temporal “still”
English still has at least two meanings. Temporal “continuing up to now” is normally ankoraŭ. Concessive “despite that” is tamen.
La infano ankoraŭ dormas.
The child is still sleeping.
La infano estas laca, sed tamen ne volas dormi.
The child is tired but still does not want to sleep.
In the first, the sleeping continues through time. In the second, refusing to sleep is surprising despite tiredness. Sometimes both meanings can coexist, but the English word alone cannot choose the Esperanto form.
Questions, answers, and register
Tamen can challenge an expectation inside a question:
Ĉu vi tamen venos al la kunveno?
Will you come to the meeting after all / nevertheless?
This is not a neutral question. It implies an obstacle or earlier reason to expect nonattendance.
Some speakers use bare Tamen! as a positive response contradicting a negative question. PMEG records this accepted usage, but international interpretation is not uniform. Prefer a complete answer:
— Ĉu vi ne venos? — Jes, mi tamen venos.
— Aren't you coming? — Yes, I will come after all.
The full clause clearly states the polarity and the concessive nuance. Bare response particles are especially risky after negative questions.
Punctuation and information packaging
Punctuation follows the clause boundary, not the presence of tamen alone. A semicolon or period can separate two independent propositions. Inside one clause, do not automatically place commas around tamen:
La unua provo malsukcesis; tamen la dua donis bonajn rezultojn.
The first attempt failed; however, the second produced good results.
La dua provo tamen donis bonajn rezultojn.
The second attempt nevertheless produced good results.
Initial Tamen foregrounds the discourse turn. Post-subject tamen foregrounds the surprising validity of that subject's action or state.
Common Mistakes
1. Using tamen for temporal continuation.
❌ Mi tamen atendas la respondon de hieraŭ.
Incorrect for ‘I am still waiting’; tamen means ‘nevertheless,’ not continuing time.
✅ Mi ankoraŭ atendas la respondon de hieraŭ.
I am still waiting for the reply from yesterday.
2. Treating tamen as a subordinator meaning although.
❌ Tamen mi estis laca, mi daŭrigis la laboron.
Incorrect — tamen does not introduce a concessive subordinate clause.
✅ Kvankam mi estis laca, mi tamen daŭrigis la laboron.
Although I was tired, I nevertheless continued the work.
3. Using tamen where a simple additive link is intended.
❌ Ŝi aĉetis panon kaj tamen lakton.
Incorrect for simple addition — no contrary expectation connects the two objects.
✅ Ŝi aĉetis panon kaj lakton.
She bought bread and milk.
4. Omitting ke and losing reported scope.
❌ Li diris, ke li estas laca, tamen li venos.
Incorrect for two equally reported claims — the final clause can read as the narrator's conclusion.
✅ Li diris, ke li estas laca, sed ke li tamen venos.
He said that he was tired but that he would nevertheless come.
5. Copying English backshift.
❌ Ŝi diris, ke la vojo estas longa, sed ke ŝi tamen daŭrigus.
Incorrect if she announced a real future continuation; -us makes it hypothetical.
✅ Ŝi diris, ke la vojo estas longa, sed ke ŝi tamen daŭrigos.
She said that the road was long but that she would nevertheless continue.
Key Takeaways
Tamen says that something holds despite a previously stated or understood obstacle. It is movable and adverbial, not a coordinating conjunction. Combine it freely with sed, kvankam, or malgraŭ when that reinforces clarity; use ankoraŭ for temporal “still”; and let the clause choose its tense and mood independently.
