اشتغل ishtaghal / يشتغل yishtaghal is the core Cairene verb for “work, be employed” and for a machine or system “work, run, function.” It is a Pattern VIII verb, but learners need this lexical paradigm and its complement frames more than a theoretical pattern label; the Pattern VIII overview supplies the broader morphology. The same form covers a person doing work and a device operating; the subject and context choose the sense.
Do not confuse intransitive اشتغل with causative شغّل shaghghal “turn on, operate, employ.” That contrast determines whether an object clitic can attach.
Complete practical paradigm
| Person | Perfect | Bare imperfect | b-imperfect | ḥa-future |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The initial vowel supports the perfect and imperative cluster. It is absent from the prefixed imperfect: اشتغل but بيشتغل. In the first-person future, حـ attaches directly to the consonant cluster: حشتغل, not a separately written auxiliary.
اشتغلت في مطعم طول الصيف اللي فات.
ishtaghalt fi maṭʿam ṭūl iṣ-ṣēf illi fāt.
I worked in a restaurant all last summer.
أخويا بيشتغل ست أيام في الأسبوع.
ʾakhūya biyishtaghal sitt ʾayyām fi l-ʾusbūʿ.
My brother works six days a week.
Employment frames and prepositions
The preposition identifies the work relation; English work at/on/for/with is not a reliable one-for-one map.
| Frame | Typical meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| اشتغل في | work in/at a place or field | اِشْتَغَلْ فِي بَنْكْ ishtaghal fi bank |
| اشتغل مع | work with a person, team, or company | اِشْتَغَلْ مَعْ فَرِيقْ ishtaghal maʿ farīʾ |
| اشتغل عند | work for/at a person’s business | اِشْتَغَلْ عِنْدْ دُكْتُورْ ishtaghal ʿand doktōr |
| اشتغل على | work on a task, project, or device | اِشْتَغَلْ عَلَى مَشْرُوعْ ishtaghal ʿala mashrūʿ |
داليا بتشتغل مع شركة شحن في الحسابات.
Dālya bitishtaghal maʿ shirkit shaḥn fi l-ḥisābāt.
Dalia works with a shipping company in accounting.
حنشتغل على النسخة الجديدة بعد الاجتماع.
ḥanishtaghal ʿala n-noskha l-gidīda baʿd il-igtimāʿ.
We'll work on the new version after the meeting.
A profession can follow directly: اشتغلت مدرسة “she worked as a teacher.” كـ appears in professional or formal speech—اشتغل كمدير مشروع—but mechanically inserting it everywhere can sound translated. A work duration also follows directly: اشتغل عشر ساعات.
أمي اشتغلت مدرسة قبل ما تفتح المكتبة.
ʾommi ishtaghalit modarrisa ʾabl ma tiftaḥ il-maktaba.
My mother worked as a teacher before she opened the bookshop.
The common reflexive collocation اشتغل على نفسه means to work deliberately on one’s skills, habits, or professional development. The suffix stays on على, because the person is the object of the preposition, not a direct object of اشتغل.
لازم أشتغل على نفسي في الكتابة قبل ما أقدم.
lāzim ʾashtaghal ʿala nafsi fi l-kitāba ʾabl ma ʾaddim.
I need to improve my writing before I apply.
A machine works or someone turns it on
With a device as subject, perfect اشتغل often means “started working/turned on,” while b-imperfect describes normal operation. State adjective شغال shaghghāl means “working, running, on.” These are not interchangeable in every time frame.
التكييف اشتغل بعد ما غيرنا الفيوز.
it-takyīf ishtaghal baʿd ma ghayyarna l-fyūz.
The air conditioner started working after we changed the fuse.
البرنامج مابيشتغلش على الموبايل القديم.
il-barnāmig ma-biyishtaghalsh ʿala l-mobāyl il-ʾadīm.
The program doesn't run on the old phone.
سيب المروحة شغالة عشان الأوضة حر.
sīb il-marwaḥa shaghghāla ʿashān il-ʾōḍa ḥarr.
Leave the fan running because the room is hot.
To turn something on, operate it, or employ someone, use causative شغّل / بيشغّل shaghghal / biyshaghghal. This is where a direct-object clitic belongs: شغلته “I turned it on/employed him.”
شغلتها، بس صوتها كان عالي فقفلتها.
shaghghaltaha, bass ṣōtha kān ʿāli fa-ʾafaltaha.
I turned it on, but it was loud, so I switched it off. (feminine device understood)
Bare forms, commands, negation, and participles
Bare forms follow modals: عايز أشتغل، لازم تشتغل. Commands are اشتغل ishtaghal, اشتغلي ishtaghali, and اشتغلوا ishtaghalu. Negative commands use ماتشتغلش. Perfect and b-imperfect take ما...ش; current شغال takes مش.
اشتغل من البيت النهارده لو الطريق مقفول.
ishtaghal min il-bēt in-naharda law iṭ-ṭarīʾ maʾfūl.
Work from home today if the road is closed. (to one man)
ماشتغلتش امبارح عشان صوتي كان رايح.
ma-shtaghaltish imbāriḥ ʿashān ṣōti kān rāyiḥ.
I didn't work yesterday because I'd lost my voice.
Pattern-based مشتغل mishtaghal exists, especially meaning “occupied/engaged with” in careful or formal usage (formal/learned), but everyday Cairo normally uses finite بيشتغل for activity and شغال for an operating state. A theoretical passive participle is not a high-frequency part of this verb’s everyday reference paradigm.
A short dialogue
اللاب توب اشتغل ولا لسه واقف؟
il-lāb tōb ishtaghal walla lissa wāʾif?
Did the laptop start working, or is it still frozen?
اشتغل، بس الواي فاي لسه مابيشتغلش عليه.
ishtaghal, bass il-wāy fāy lissa ma-biyishtaghalsh ʿalēh.
It started, but the Wi-Fi still doesn't work on it.
Register and variation
اشتغل / بيشتغل and شغال are neutral mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal writing may prefer عمل، يعمل، يعمل لدى or other MSA occupational frames (formal/MSA). Professional speech commonly code-switches field names, job titles, and technical terms; that is structured workplace usage, not “bad Arabic.” Pronunciation and preferred prepositions vary across Alexandria, the Delta, Upper Egypt, Bedouin communities, class, age, and industry (regional/social/professional). Stage dialogue may exaggerate occupational stereotypes (performance language) and should not be treated as a neutral model.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating occupational work with عمل.
❌ أنا بعمل في مستشفى خاص.
Incorrect ordinary occupational frame—use اشتغل for being employed.
✅ أنا بشتغل في مستشفى خاص قريب من البيت.
ʾana bashtaghal fi mustashfa khāṣṣ ʾarīb min il-bēt.
I work at a private hospital near home.
2. Copying English on for a workplace.
❌ هي بتشتغل على بنك كبير.
Wrong preposition for employment at an institution; على introduces a task or project.
✅ هي بتشتغل في بنك كبير وبتشتغل على نظام جديد.
hiyya bitishtaghal fi bank kibīr wi-bitishtaghal ʿala niẓām gidīd.
She works at a large bank and is working on a new system.
3. Using اشتغل transitively for ‘turn it on.’
❌ اشتغلته ومارضيش يفتح.
Incorrect causative frame—the intransitive verb does not take the device as a direct object.
✅ شغلته تلات مرات وبرضه مارضيش يفتح.
shaghghaltu talāt marrāt wi-barḍo ma-riḍīsh yiftaḥ.
I turned it on three times, and it still wouldn't start.
4. Using MSA-style present morphology in ordinary Cairo.
❌ هو يشتغل هنا كل يوم.
Incorrect for an independent everyday habit—the Cairene b-imperfect needs بـ.
✅ هو بيشتغل هنا من السبت للأربع.
huwwa biyishtaghal hina min is-sabt lil-ʾarbaʿ.
He works here from Saturday through Wednesday.
