English uses the broad words study, learn, and work across many situations. Mainstream Cairene divides that territory among several stable frames: ذاكر for doing the studying or revision, درس for studying a subject or being enrolled in a field, اتعلم for acquiring knowledge or a skill, and اشتغل for having or doing work. Fluency comes from learning the complement that belongs with each verb, not from translating one English word at a time.
These are everyday (informal/neutral Cairene) frames. Formal أدرس، أعمل، أتقدم لوظيفة are valid in MSA and deliberate professional code-switching (formal/MSA), but they should not silently replace the colloquial system in an ordinary conversation.
Four anchors, four kinds of activity
The perfect and b-imperfect anchors are ذاكر / بيذاكر zākar / biyzākir, درس / بيدرس daras / biyidros, اتعلم / بيتعلم itʿallim / biyitʿallim, and اشتغل / بيشتغل ishtighal / biyishtighal. The b-imperfect presents an ongoing, repeated, or characteristic activity; the perfect presents a bounded episode.
| Frame | What it profiles | Typical variable slot |
|---|---|---|
| ذاكر + subject / للامتحان | do revision or schoolwork | عربي، الدرس، للامتحان |
| درس + subject / في institution | study a field; be a student somewhere | هندسة، في الجامعة |
| اتعلم + noun / bare verb | acquire knowledge or a skill | إنجليزي، يسوق |
| اشتغل + في / مع / على | work in a place, with people, or on a task | في بنك، مع فريق، على مشروع |
أنا بذاكر في المكتبة ساعتين بعد الشغل.
ʾana bazākir fil-maktaba sāʿten baʿd ish-shoghl.
I study in the library for two hours after work.
أختي بتدرس هندسة في جامعة خاصة.
ʾokhti bitidros handasa fi gāmʿa khāṣṣa.
My sister studies engineering at a private university.
هو بيتعلم يسوق عشان شغله الجديد.
huwwa biyitʿallim yisūʾ ʿashān shoghlu l-gidīd.
He is learning to drive because of his new job.
The last example has يتعلم + bare verb. English inserts to in “learn to drive”; Egyptian uses a person-marked bare imperfect يسوق with no equivalent of to. See stacked predicates for the wider complement pattern.
Work prepositions identify the relationship
With اشتغل, the preposition is meaningful. في locates employment in a company, sector, or place; مع names a person, team, or organization you collaborate with; على names a project, file, device, or problem receiving your effort. These are productive substitution frames, but they are not interchangeable.
بشتغل في صيدلية قريبة من البيت.
bashtaghal fi ṣedaliyya ʾarība min il-bet.
I work at a pharmacy near home.
النهارده بشتغل مع فريق المبيعات على العرض.
in-nahārda bashtaghal maʿ farīʾ il-mabīʿāt ʿala l-ʿarḍ.
Today I’m working with the sales team on the presentation.
An occupation can follow without an English-style “as”: بشتغل مهندسة “I work as an engineer.” In more formal professional language, بشتغل كمهندسة also occurs (professional/code-switched), but learners should not assume English as always requires كـ.
Applications, assignments, and aspect
“Apply for” is conventionally قدّم على + opportunity in ordinary Cairene. The object after على may be a job, training program, or grant. For an assignment, عمل الواجب means “do the homework,” while سلّم الواجب means “hand it in.” The English noun does not choose the Egyptian verb by itself.
قدمت على تدريب صيفي ولسه مستني الرد.
ʾaddimt ʿala tadrīb ṣefi wi-lissa mistanni r-radd.
I applied for a summer internship and I’m still waiting for the reply.
عملت الواجب امبارح وسلمته الصبح.
ʿamilt il-wāgib imbāriḥ wi-sallamtu ṣ-ṣobḥ.
I did the homework yesterday and handed it in this morning.
Negation surrounds the finite verb. A repeated activity retains بـ: مابذاكرش “I do not study,” مابيشتغلش “it does not work/he does not work.” A bounded past episode has no بـ: ماذاكرتش “I did not study.”
اللابتوب مابيشتغلش، فمش عارف أكمل الشغل.
il-lābtob ma-biyishtighalsh, fa-mish ʿārif ʾakammil ish-shoghl.
The laptop isn’t working, so I can’t continue the work.
Here اشتغل describes a machine functioning, not employment. The subject and context select the reading.
Three everyday situations
Before an exam, ذاكر للامتحان identifies preparation; at university, درس + field identifies a course of study; in the workplace, اشتغل على + task identifies what is receiving effort. Time expressions then choose the viewpoint.
ماذاكرتش كويس الأسبوع اللي فات، فحراجع الدرس الليلة.
ma-zākartish kuwayyis il-ʾosbūʿ illi fāt, fa-ḥa-rāgiʿ id-dars il-lela.
I didn’t study well last week, so I’ll review the lesson tonight.
بعد التخرج اتعلمت أستخدم البرنامج في الشغل.
baʿd it-takharrug itʿallimt ʾastakhdim il-barnāmig fish-shoghl.
After graduating, I learned to use the program at work.
المديرة طلبت مني أشتغل على الملف من البيت.
il-modīra ṭalabit minni ʾashtaghal ʿala l-malaff min il-bet.
The manager asked me to work on the file from home.
A study-planning dialogue
إنت ذاكرت للامتحان ولا لسه؟
ʾinta zākart lil-imtiḥān walla lissa?
Have you studied for the exam yet?
لسه، حخلص الشغل وأذاكر ساعتين قبل ما أنام.
lissa, ḥa-khallaṣ ish-shoghl wa-ʾazākir sāʿten ʾabl ma ʾanām.
Not yet; I’ll finish work and study for two hours before I sleep.
The first turn requests a real progress update. In the reply, future حـ scopes over خلص; coordinated أذاكر is bare under the same projected sequence.
Register and variation
Urban speakers across Egypt share these core frames, though vowel quality and individual lexical preferences vary (regional: Alexandria/Delta/Upper Egypt). Education, age, and professional setting also affect code-switching: أدرس في الجامعة may be deliberate formal Arabic in an interview (formal/professional), while بدرس في الجامعة is the neutral Cairene baseline. Neither variety is “bad Arabic”; mixing them without recognizing the social choice is the problem.
Common Mistakes
Translating “study” with a made-up support-verb phrase
❌ بعمل دراسة للامتحان كل ليلة.
Incorrect for ordinary exam preparation—the English activity maps to بذاكر للامتحان, not a literal ‘do a study.’
✅ بذاكر للامتحان كل ليلة.
bazākir lil-imtiḥān koll lela.
I study for the exam every night.
Using one work preposition for every relation
❌ بشتغل على شركة أدوية.
Incorrect for employment at a company—على introduces a task or project, not the employer location here.
✅ بشتغل في شركة أدوية.
bashtaghal fi sharikit ʾadwiya.
I work at a pharmaceutical company.
Inserting an English-style infinitive marker
❌ باتعلم علشان أسوق.
Incorrect for the intended direct ‘learn to drive’ complement—علشان adds purpose, not English infinitival ‘to.’
✅ باتعلم أسوق.
batʿallim ʾasūʾ.
I’m learning to drive.
Treating a formal choice as the neutral intimate register
✅ أنا أدرس الهندسة وأعمل في مصرف.
ʾana ʾadros il-handasa wa-ʾaʿmal fi maṣrif.
I study engineering and work at a bank. (valid formal/MSA-influenced wording; mismatched for the intended relaxed chat)
✅ أنا بدرس هندسة وبشتغل في بنك.
ʾana badros handasa wi-bashtaghal fi bank.
I study engineering and work at a bank. (ordinary Cairo)
Key Takeaways
Use ذاكر for study activity, درس for a subject or program, اتعلم for acquisition, and اشتغل for work or functioning. Keep في، مع، على with the relationships they mark, let the finite verb carry aspect and negation, and treat formal alternatives as register choices rather than as the only “correct” Arabic.
