عمل Collocations

عمل / بيعمل ʿamal / biyʿamil covers a broad lexical network: doing a task, making or preparing something, causing an event, and supporting conventional expressions such as عمل حسابه على “plan for.” It is tempting to call it the Egyptian equivalent of English do/make, but that shortcut immediately fails with أخد قرار “make a decision” and many other collocations.

The productive grammar and the lexical pairings must be learned together. عمل carries person, aspect, future حـ, negation, and direct-object clitics; the following noun or complement determines the particular sense. The baseline here is everyday Cairo (informal/neutral).

The verb supplies grammar; the complement supplies the event

The main anchors are perfect عمل ʿamal, b-imperfect بيعمل biyʿamil, bare imperfect يعمل yiʿmil, command اعمل iʿmal, and active participle عامل ʿāmil. In a support-verb expression, inflect عمل, not the event noun.

عملت قهوة للضيوف قبل ما يوصلوا.

ʿamilt ʾahwa liḍ-ḍoyūf ʾabl ma yiwṣalu.

I made coffee for the guests before they arrived.

الولد بيعمل واجبه أول ما يرجع.

il-walad biyʿamil wāgbu ʾawwil ma yirgaʿ.

The boy does his homework as soon as he gets back.

اعمل نسخة من العقد وخلي الأصل معاك.

iʿmal noskha min il-ʿaʾd wi-khalli l-ʾaṣl maʿāk.

Make a copy of the contract and keep the original with you.

These objects remain noun phrases: they can be definite, modified, or replaced by an object clitic. The breadth of the frame is real, but it does not license every English collocation.

💡
Treat عمل + noun as a candidate, not an automatic translation rule. The noun may conventionally select another verb: a decision takes أخد, while an application uses قدّم على.

Light-verb combinations are conventional predicates

With event nouns, عمل packages the event as a countable or discussable unit. Common frames include عمل مكالمة “make a call,” عمل دوشة “make a racket,” عمل مشكلة “cause a problem,” and عمل مجهود “make an effort.” A modifier belongs to the noun, while aspect stays on the verb.

هي عملت مكالمة سريعة قبل المحاضرة.

hiyya ʿamilit mokālma sarīʿa ʾabl il-moḥāḍara.

She made a quick phone call before the lecture.

الجيران بيعملوا دوشة كل خميس بالليل.

il-gīrān biyʿamlu dosha koll khamīs bil-lel.

The neighbors make a racket every Thursday night.

إنت عملت مجهود كبير عشان تحل المشكلة.

ʾinta ʿamilt maghūd kibīr ʿashān tiḥill il-mushkila.

You made a big effort to solve the problem.

The simple verb alternative may profile the event differently. اتصلت بيه foregrounds contacting a particular person; عملت مكالمة packages a call as an event without necessarily naming its other participant. See Light and Support Verbs for the structural system.

عمل حسابه: the possessor is inside the expression

عمل حسابه على + noun means that someone planned for or allowed for something. A clause can follow إن. The possessive suffix on حساب tracks the planner: حسابي، حسابك، حسابها، حسابنا.

إحنا عاملين حسابنا على زحمة الطريق.

ʾiḥna ʿāmlīn ḥisābna ʿala zaḥmit iṭ-ṭarīʾ.

We’ve allowed for the traffic. (literally: made our account for it)

اعمل حسابك إن المحلات بتقفل بدري.

iʿmal ḥisābak ʾinn il-maḥallāt bitʾifil badri.

Bear in mind that the shops close early.

Here the active participle عاملين presents a current prepared state. English may translate the whole expression with expect, allow for, or bear in mind; those glosses do not alter the Egyptian internal frame.

عامل نفسه and عامل إيه

With عامل نفسه + predicate, a person presents or pretends themself to be in a state. The reflexive noun carries the matching suffix. Separately, عامل إيه؟ is a conventional everyday greeting meaning “How are you doing?” Its feminine and plural forms agree: عاملة إيه؟، عاملين إيه؟

هو عامل نفسه مش سامع السؤال.

huwwa ʿāmil nafsu mish sāmiʿ is-suʾāl.

He’s pretending not to hear the question.

عاملة إيه بعد أول أسبوع في الشغل؟

ʿāmla ʾeh baʿd ʾawwil ʾosbūʿ fish-shoghl?

How are you doing after your first week at work? (to a woman)

The greeting is socially broad in ordinary Cairo. Formal كيف حالك؟ is correct (formal/MSA) but has a markedly different register in an intimate chat.

Aspect, polarity, and clitics

Perfect عمل bounds an event, b-imperfect بيعمل presents a habit or current activity, and joined حـ projects it. Negation wraps the finite form: ماعملش، مابيعملش. A direct-object clitic comes before -ش.

حعمل الأكل لما أرجع من السوق.

ḥa-ʿmil il-ʾakl lamma ʾargaʿ min is-sūʾ.

I’ll make the food when I get back from the market.

التجربة دي ماعملناهاش قبل كده.

it-tagriba di ma-ʿamilnāhāsh ʾabl kida.

We haven’t done this experiment before.

The feminine object -ها refers back to التجربة and sits inside ماعملناهاش. Do not separate it or place -ش before it.

Three everyday situations

At home, عمل أكل/قهوة describes preparation. At work, عمل مكالمة/نسخة packages a task. In planning, عمل حسابه على identifies an assumption or allowance.

ماما عملت أكل يكفي يومين عشان مسافرة.

māma ʿamilit ʾakl yikfi yomen ʿashān mosāfra.

Mom made enough food for two days because she’s traveling.

قبل الاجتماع حنعمل تجربة للصوت.

ʾabl il-igtimāʿ ḥa-niʿmil tagriba liṣ-ṣot.

Before the meeting, we’ll do a sound check.

عامل حسابك على نص ساعة زيادة.

ʿāmil ḥisābak ʿala noṣṣ sāʿa ziyāda.

Allow an extra half hour.

💡
The active participle is not just “present continuous.” In عامل حسابه it describes a prepared state; in عامل نفسه it presents an adopted pose; in عامل إيه؟ it is part of a greeting.

A workplace dialogue

عملت حسابك على التعديلات الجديدة؟

ʿamilt ḥisābak ʿala t-taʿdīlāt il-gidīda?

Did you account for the latest changes?

آه، وعملت نسخة تانية من العرض احتياطي.

ʾāh, wi-ʿamilt noskha tānya min il-ʿarḍ iḥtiyāṭi.

Yes, and I made another copy of the presentation as a backup.

Register and variation

Formal administrative Arabic may choose أجرى مكالمة، بذل مجهودا، وضع في الحسبان (formal/MSA). These are legitimate in reports or scripted speech, but sound inflated if inserted into a casual Cairo exchange. Regional, age, class, community, and performance varieties may favor different nouns or greeting formulas (regional/social/performance); the argument structure described here is the mainstream urban baseline.

Common Mistakes

Translating English “make” mechanically

❌ عملوا قرار يفتحوا الفرع بدري.

Incorrect ordinary collocation—قرار selects أخد, not عمل.

✅ أخدوا قرار يفتحوا الفرع بدري.

ʾakhadu ʾarār yiftaḥu l-farʿ badri.

They decided to open the branch early. (literally: took a decision)

Losing the possessive suffix in عمل حسابه

❌ اعمل حساب على الزحمة.

Incorrect for ‘take the traffic into account’—the planner is encoded by a suffix on حساب.

✅ اعمل حسابك على الزحمة.

iʿmal ḥisābak ʿala z-zaḥma.

Allow for the traffic.

Separating an attached object

❌ التجربة دي ماعملنا ها ش.

Incorrect—object -ها and negative -ش belong to one orthographic word.

✅ التجربة دي ماعملناهاش.

it-tagriba di ma-ʿamilnāhāsh.

We didn’t do this experiment.

Using عامل نفسه without a matching suffix

❌ هي عاملة نفسه مشغولة.

Incorrect—the reflexive suffix must refer to the feminine subject.

✅ هي عاملة نفسها مشغولة.

hiyya ʿāmla nafsha mashghūla.

She’s pretending to be busy.

Replacing a casual greeting with unlabelled formal Arabic

✅ كيف حالك يا صاحبي؟

kef ḥālak ya ṣāḥbi?

How are you, my friend? (valid formal/MSA-influenced wording; mismatched for the intended relaxed Cairo greeting)

✅ عامل إيه يا صاحبي؟

ʿāmil ʾeh ya ṣāḥbi?

How are you doing, my friend? (ordinary Cairo)

Key Takeaways

Let عمل carry aspect, agreement, future marking, negation, and direct-object clitics. Learn its noun partners as collocations, preserve the suffix inside عمل حسابه and عامل نفسه, and resist treating English do/make as a license to use عمل with every noun.
