Light and Support Verbs

In عمل مكالمة “make a phone call” and أخد قرار “make a decision,” the verb contributes agreement, viewpoint, negation, and much of the event structure, while the noun supplies the more specific action. Linguists call عمل and أخد “light” or “support” verbs in these uses. They are not meaningless: choosing عمل rather than أخد is part of the collocation, and changing the verb can make the phrase unnatural or change its meaning.

English also uses light verbs—make a decision, take a break, have a look—but the pairings do not translate word for word. Learn each Egyptian combination as one predicate, then inflect the support verb normally. The noun-like half follows the principles in The Maṣdar Overview, although not every light-verb noun is synchronically a maṣdar.

A practical collocation map

These combinations are common in mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Some nouns also have a simpler finite-verb alternative.

CombinationNatural meaningCommon alternative or frame
عمل مكالمة ʿamal mokālmamade a phone callاتصل بـ “called”
عمل دوشة ʿamal dōshamade a disturbance/noiseدوّش “bothered with noise”
عمل مشكلة ʿamal mushkilacaused/made a problemسبب مشكلة “caused a problem” (more formal)
أخد قرار ʾakhad ʾarārmade a decisionقرر “decided”
أخد باله من ʾakhad bālu minnoticed; paid attention tothe possessor on بال agrees
أخد وقت ʾakhad waʾttook timeduration follows in context
أخد نفس ʾakhad nafastook a breathcountable event

عملت مكالمة سريعة قبل الاجتماع.

ʿamilt mokālma sarīʿa ʾabl il-igtimāʿ.

I made a quick phone call before the meeting.

العيال عملوا دوشة والجيران اشتكوا.

il-ʿiyāl ʿamilu dōsha wi-l-gīrān ishtaku.

The kids made a racket, and the neighbors complained.

أخدنا قرار نأجل السفر أسبوع.

ʾakhadna ʾarār niʾaggil is-safar ʾosbūʿ.

We decided to postpone the trip for a week. (literally: took a decision)

The noun can be modified—مكالمة سريعة—or followed by a clause—قرار نأجل. That noun-like behavior does not stop the whole combination from functioning as one predicate.

💡
Store the verb and noun together: أخد قرار, not simply “قرار = decision.” English make does not tell you whether Egyptian selects عمل، أخد، ادّى, or a simple verb.

The support verb carries the finite morphology

With عمل مكالمة, only عمل receives person, gender, بـ, حـ, and verbal ما...ش. The noun remains a noun.

Time-context minimal pair

عملت مكالمة للبنك امبارح.

ʿamilt mokālma lil-bank imbāriḥ.

I made a call to the bank yesterday.

بعمل مكالمة للفريق كل يوم الصبح.

baʿmil mokālma lil-farīʾ koll yōm iṣ-ṣobḥ.

I make a call to the team every morning.

The perfect presents one bounded call; the b-imperfect presents a routine. A projected call uses joined حـ: حعمل مكالمة بعد الغدا “I’ll make a call after lunch.” The noun itself never takes بـ or حـ.

Complement frames stay lexical

The participants do not all attach to the same place. In أخد باله من الموضوع, -ه on باله agrees with the person paying attention, while the noticed item follows من. In عملها, an object suffix can replace an already mentioned feminine event noun such as المكالمة.

هي أخدت بالها من الغلطة بدري.

hiyya ʾakhadit bālha min il-ghalṭa badri.

She noticed the mistake early.

خد بالك منه، هو مش مركز.

khod bālak minnu, huwwa mish morakkiz.

Keep an eye on him; he isn’t paying attention.

المكالمة مهمة، فاعملها قبل ما تنزل.

il-mokālma muhimma, fa-ʿmalha ʾabl ma tinzil.

The call is important, so make it before you go out.

English-speaker intuition often puts every pronoun directly after the light verb. Egyptian follows the lexical frame: باله منها, not a mechanically invented direct object.

Negation targets the support verb

To deny the event, wrap ما...ش around the finite support verb. Any direct object clitic remains inside the negative word; a separate event noun follows it.

Positive-to-negative pair

هو أخد قرار بعد الاجتماع.

huwwa ʾakhad ʾarār baʿd il-igtimāʿ.

He made a decision after the meeting.

هو ماخدش قرار بعد الاجتماع.

huwwa ma-khadsh ʾarār baʿd il-igtimāʿ.

He didn’t make a decision after the meeting.

هي مابتعملش مكالمات وقت الشغل.

hiyya ma-bitʿamilsh mokālmāt waʾt ish-shoghl.

She doesn’t make calls during work.

The last negative keeps بـ because it denies a habit. Do not negate مكالمة with verbal ما...ش.

Light construction versus simple verb

The alternatives are not always exact stylistic duplicates. أخد قرار foregrounds the decision as a bounded, nameable act; قرر profiles deciding directly. عمل مكالمة can package one call as an event, while اتصل بحد foregrounds contacting a person. Choice depends on discourse, not on an English tense label.

قررنا نكمل، وبعدها عملنا مكالمة للمحاسب.

ʾarrarna nikammil, wi-baʿdaha ʿamilna mokālma lil-moḥāsib.

We decided to continue, and then we made a call to the accountant.

Formal news and administrative Arabic may prefer قام بـ or أجرى plus an event noun (formal/MSA-influenced). Those are valid register choices, but قام بإجراء مكالمة sounds bureaucratic in an ordinary Cairo chat. Regional, class, age, community, and performance styles can favor different collocations (regional/social/performance); label them instead of blending them into the baseline.

💡
A light construction is partly productive and partly lexical. The verb carries grammar, but the noun chooses its partner; verify the whole combination before extending it to a new noun.

A two-turn Cairene dialogue

عملت المكالمة اللي اتفقنا عليها؟

ʿamilt il-mokālma lli ittafaʾna ʿalēha?

Did you make the call we agreed on?

لسه، حعملها بعد الاجتماع.

lissa, ḥa-ʿmilha baʿd il-igtimāʿ.

Not yet; I’ll make it after the meeting.

Common Mistakes

Translating English make mechanically

❌ عملنا قرار نأجل السفر.

Incorrect collocation—the ordinary Cairene phrase is أخدنا قرار.

✅ أخدنا قرار نأجل السفر.

ʾakhadna ʾarār niʾaggil is-safar.

We decided to postpone the trip.

Putting b- on the noun

❌ أنا عملت بمكالمة كل يوم.

Incorrect—the support verb, not the event noun, carries b- in a habitual clause.

✅ أنا بعمل مكالمة كل يوم.

ʾana baʿmil mokālma koll yōm.

I make a call every day.

Omitting b- from a neutral habit

❌ هو يعمل دوشة كل ليلة.

Incorrect for a neutral Cairene habitual main clause—the support verb needs b-.

✅ هو بيعمل دوشة كل ليلة.

huwwa biyʿamil dōsha koll lēla.

He makes noise every night.

Separating an attached pronoun

❌ خد بال ه منها.

Incorrect—possessive -ه attaches to بال in this lexical expression.

✅ خد باله منها.

khad bālu minha.

He noticed it / paid attention to it.

Importing bureaucratic wording into casual speech

❌ قمت بإجراء مكالمة لأمي.

Mismatched register for the intended casual conversation—this is heavy formal phrasing, not the Cairo baseline.

✅ عملت مكالمة لأمي.

ʿamilt mokālma li-ʾommi.

I made a call to my mother. (ordinary Cairo)

Key Takeaways

Treat عمل مكالمة، عمل دوشة، أخد قرار، أخد باله من، أخد وقت as lexical predicates. The support verb carries person, gender, stem choice, بـ, حـ, and ما...ش; the noun supplies the event type and its own modifiers or complements. A formal light-verb construction can be grammatical yet still be the wrong register for ordinary Cairene speech.
