عمل ʿamal — do; make; work

عمل is the high-frequency Cairene verb behind many meanings translated with English do and make: making coffee, doing homework, causing a problem, carrying out a call, or pretending to be something. It is a strong Form I verb from ع-م-ل, with perfect عمل ʿamal and imperfect يعمل yiʿmil. Its consonants are regular, but the short vowels shift before suffixes, so the forms still need to be learned as spoken forms rather than guessed from spelling.

English divides many situations between do, make, and work. Egyptian packages numerous conventional events as عمل + noun, but it does not use عمل for every English occurrence of those three verbs. Natural usage depends on the collocation.

Bare imperfect follows modal and subordinate frames: عايز أعمل، لازم تعمل، عشان نعمل. The b-imperfect asserts a current, repeated, or characteristic event: بعمل، بيعمل. Future ḥa- attaches to the bare imperfect base.

Imperative and participles

The positive imperative is اعمل iʿmal to one man, اعملي iʿmali to one woman, and اعملوا iʿmalu to a group. The negative command uses ما...ش around the imperfect: ماتعملش.

اعمل نسخة من الملف قبل ما تغير أي حاجة.

iʿmal noskha min il-malaff ʾabl ma tghayyar ʾayy ḥāga.

Make a copy of the file before you change anything.

ماتعملش حسابك على إن القطر هيوصل في معاده.

ma-tiʿmilsh ḥisābak ʿala inni l-ʾaṭar ha-yiwṣal fi maʿādo.

Don't count on the train arriving on time.

The active participle is عامل، عاملة، عاملين. It can describe someone engaged in or responsible for an action, but several uses are lexicalized. Most importantly, عامل إيه؟ is the ordinary greeting “How are you doing?” It is not compositionally “making what?” The result/passive participle معمول means “made, prepared, or done.”

عامل إيه يا كريم؟ بقالي كتير ماشفتكش.

ʿāmil ʾēh ya Karīm? baʾāli ktīr ma-shoftaksh.

How are you, Karim? I haven't seen you in ages.

الحلويات دي معمولة في البيت، مش من محل.

il-ḥalawiyyāt di maʿmūla fi l-bēt, mish min maḥall.

These sweets are homemade, not from a shop.

Direct objects and object clitics

In its ordinary transitive use, عمل takes a direct object with no preposition: عمل القهوة، عمل الواجب، عمل نسخة. A definite pronoun becomes a suffix. After the perfect, عملتها ʿamiltha can mean “I did it” or “I made it,” with feminine ـها agreeing with a referent such as القهوة or النسخة.

عملت القهوة وحطيتها في الترمس عشان تفضل سخنة.

ʿamilt il-ʾahwa wi-ḥaṭṭētha fi t-termos ʿashān tifḍal sokhna.

I made the coffee and put it in the thermos so it would stay hot.

النسخة اللي طلبتها عملتها وبعتها لك على الإيميل.

in-noskha lli ṭalabtha ʿamiltha wi-baʿattha lak ʿala l-ʾēmēl.

I made the copy you requested and sent it to you by email.

Circumfixal negation encloses the verb and all attached object material: ماعملتهاش. This single written word reflects one phonological unit.

لسه ماعملناهاش؛ مستنيين المدير يوافق الأول.

lissa ma-ʿamilnāhāsh; mistanniyīn il-mudīr ywāfiʾ il-awwil.

We haven't done it yet; we're waiting for the manager to approve first.

High-frequency collocations

The broad meaning comes from the noun that follows. Treat these as frames, not as proof that عمل can replace every English verb.

اعمل حسابك إن الطريق بياخد ساعة وقت الزحمة.

iʿmal ḥisābak inni ṭ-ṭarīʾ biyākhod sāʿa waʾt iz-zaḥma.

Allow for the road taking an hour during rush hour.

عمل نفسه مش سامع السؤال وغير الموضوع.

ʿamal nafso mish sāmiʿ is-suʾāl wi-ghayyar il-mawḍūʿ.

He pretended not to hear the question and changed the subject.

This light-verb behavior is productive only within established collocations. The related عمل expressions page groups more frames by meaning.

Does عمل mean “work”?

بيعمل إيه؟ can ask “What does he do?” about occupation, and عامل can describe operation in set contexts: التكييف عامل كويس is possible informally, though many speakers prefer شغال كويس. For the activity “to work at a job,” neutral Cairene generally uses اشتغل / بيشتغل, not bare عمل.

أخوك بيعمل إيه؟ بيشتغل مهندس في شركة اتصالات.

akhūk biyiʿmil ʾēh? biyishtaghal mohandis fi shirkit ittiṣālāt.

What does your brother do? He works as an engineer at a telecom company.

The question uses عمل broadly; the occupational answer uses اشتغل. English encourages learners to map one word onto both, but Cairene chooses by frame.

A short conversation

عملت إيه في موضوع الحجز؟ كلمت الفندق، بس لسه ماعملتش التأكيد النهائي.

ʿamilt ʾēh fi mawḍūʿ il-ḥagz? kallimt il-fondoʾ, bass lissa ma-ʿamiltish it-taʾkīd in-nihāʾi.

What did you do about the booking? I called the hotel, but I haven't made the final confirmation yet.

Here عملت إيه في...؟ asks what action was taken about a matter; عمل التأكيد is a workplace-style light-verb collocation. In more concise speech, speakers may instead use the lexical verb أكد “confirm.”

Common Mistakes

1. Using عمل for every English “work.”

❌ أنا بعمل في بنك من خمس سنين.

Incorrect occupational frame—use اشتغل for working at a job.

✅ أنا بشتغل في بنك من خمس سنين.

ʾana bishtaghal fi bank min khams sinīn.

I've worked at a bank for five years.

2. Adding a preposition before an ordinary direct object.

❌ عملت للقهوة قبل ما الضيوف يوصلوا.

Incorrect—القهوة is the direct object here, with no لـ.

✅ عملت القهوة قبل ما الضيوف يوصلوا.

ʿamilt il-ʾahwa ʾabl ma ḍ-ḍoyūf yiwṣalu.

I made the coffee before the guests arrived.

3. Separating the negative suffix from an attached object.

❌ ماعملتشها لسه.

Incorrect clitic order—the object suffix precedes final -ش inside one word.

✅ ماعملتهاش لسه عشان ناقصني رقم الحساب.

ma-ʿamilthāsh lissa ʿashān nāʾiṣni raʾam il-ḥisāb.

I haven't done it yet because I still need the account number.

4. Reading عامل إيه؟ literally as “What are you making?”

❌ عامل إيه؟ بعمل سندوتش.

This misses the greeting reading unless the context explicitly concerns making something.

✅ عامل إيه؟ الحمد لله، كويس.

ʿāmil ʾēh? il-ḥamd lillāh, kowayyis.

How are you? Thank God, I'm well.

5. Treating the active participle as a general replacement for every finite form.

❌ أنا عامل الواجب كل يوم بعد الغدا.

Wrong for a regular habit—the b-imperfect presents the repeated activity.

✅ أنا بعمل الواجب كل يوم بعد الغدا.

ʾana baʿmil il-wāgib kull yōm baʿd il-ghada.

I do my homework every day after lunch.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn عمل ʿamal / يعمل yiʿmil as a strong verb with predictable consonants but real spoken-vowel alternations.
  • Direct objects attach without a preposition; object suffixes precede negative ـش: ماعملتهاش.
  • عامل إيه؟, عمل حسابه, and عمل نفسه are established frames whose meanings exceed a literal do/make translation.
  • Use اشتغل for ordinary job activity, and learn عمل + noun combinations as collocations rather than translating every English do or make mechanically.
