بقى baʾa — become; remain; then

بقى / يبقى baʾa / yibʾa is one of the structural centers of mainstream Cairene Arabic. As a verb, it means “become, come to be” and also supplies many future or nonpresent forms of English be. As a fixed discourse marker, بقى can mean “then, now, so, come on” or add insistence without changing the factual proposition.

The two uses are historically connected by transition: the verb introduces a new state, while the marker moves the conversation to a new stage. They are not grammatically identical. This page gives the full final-weak verbal paradigm and then shows how agreement, complement type, negation, position, and intonation separate it from discourse بقى.

Complete practical verbal paradigm

The root is ب-ق-ي. In mainstream Cairo, ق is /ʾ/. Final ى appears in unsuffixed masculine singular forms, but before many perfect suffixes the stem has ـقيـ and long ē: بقيت baʾēt. Plural بقوا has -u.

بعد الترميم الشقة بقت أهدى وأنور.

baʿd it-tarmīm ish-shaʾʾa baʾit ʾahda wa-ʾanwar.

After the renovation, the apartment became quieter and brighter.

من ساعة ما نقلنا، بقينا نشوف أهلنا أكتر.

min sāʿit ma naʾalna, baʾēna nishūf ʾahlina ʾaktar.

Since we moved, we've come to see our family more often.

The following verb is bare in بقينا نشوف. The new state is a recurring arrangement; بقى carries the transition, so the complement does not independently take present بـ.

💡
Use the suffix as a diagnostic. بقت، بقيت، بقوا are unmistakably verbal. Fixed discourse بقى does not become feminine or plural to agree with a nearby noun.

Change of state and future “be”

With an adjective, noun, location, or bare verb, lexical بقى introduces a state that comes to hold. The English translation may be became, got, started to, or—especially in the future—simply will be.

بعد الدورة حتبقى مسؤولة عن تدريب الموظفين الجدد.

baʿd id-dawra ḥa-tibʾa masʾūla ʿan tadrīb il-mowaẓẓafīn il-godod.

After the course, she'll be responsible for training the new employees.

لما نخلص الاجتماع حنبقى في الكافيه اللي تحت.

lamma nikhlaṣ il-igtimāʿ ḥa-nibʾa fil-kafē illi taḥt.

When we finish the meeting, we'll be in the café downstairs.

In these future copular frames, insisting on “become” would overtranslate the transition. Egyptian needs an overt future host because the present nominal sentence has no spoken copula; حيبقى provides that host. See past and future copular sentences.

Habitual بيبقى means that a state regularly obtains or develops under certain conditions. It is not a present copula to insert into every description.

الطريق ده بيبقى واقف وقت خروج المدارس.

iṭ-ṭarīʾ da biyibʾa wāʾif waʾt khorūg il-madāris.

This road is usually at a standstill when schools let out.

Present “the road is busy now” needs a zero-copula predicate, not بيبقى. The b-form adds habitual or recurring viewpoint.

Imperative ابقى and prospective reminders

The lexical commands are ابقى ibʾa, ابقي ibʾi, and ابقوا ibʾu. Literal state readings occur—ابقى هادي “stay/be calm”—but a very common Cairo use is prospective: ابقى كلمني means “call me later / remember to call me.” It places the requested action in the addressee’s next relevant state.

ابقى ابعتلي العنوان لما توصل البيت.

ibʾa ibʿatli l-ʿunwān lamma tōṣal il-bēt.

Send me the address when you get home, okay? (to one man; prospective reminder)

ابقوا جاهزين عند الباب قبل العربية ما توصل.

ibʾu gāhzīn ʿand il-bāb ʾabl il-ʿarabiyya ma tōṣal.

Be ready by the door before the car arrives. (to a group)

Negative commands use the imperfect inside ما...ش: ماتبقاش، ماتَبقيش، ماتَبقوش. Positive imperative ابقى and discourse بقى are not interchangeable.

Negation and the meaning “no longer”

Perfect مابقاش commonly means “stopped being, is no longer.” It closes a previously valid state. Imperfect مايبقاش occurs under licensors and in recurring or conditional frames.

بعد ما غيروا النظام، التسجيل مابقاش محتاج ورق.

baʿd ma ghayyaru n-niẓām, it-tasgīl ma-baʾāsh moḥtāg waraʾ.

After they changed the system, registration no longer required paperwork.

راجع المقاس عشان القميص مايبقاش واسع عليك.

rāgiʿ il-maʾās ʿashān il-ʾamīṣ ma-yibʾāsh wāsiʿ ʿalēk.

Check the size so the shirt doesn't end up too loose on you. (to one man)

بقى is a linking/change verb, not a transitive “make.” It therefore does not normally take a direct-object suffix. To say “it made him nervous,” use a causative expression such as خلّاه يتوتر, not a fabricated form of بقى. A suffix found on a following preposition or predicate belongs to that host.

The participial family: باقي is lexicalized

باقي bāʾi is historically related and extremely common, but its everyday meanings are lexicalized: “remaining, left, the rest.” It is not simply a freely interchangeable present participle meaning “becoming.” Agreement gives باقية، باقيين where appropriate.

باقي عشرين دقيقة على بداية العرض.

bāʾi ʿishrīn daʾīʾa ʿala bidāyit il-ʿarḍ.

There are twenty minutes left until the show starts.

خد النسخة دي وسيب باقي الورق عندي.

khod in-noskha di wi-sīb bāʾi l-waraʾ ʿandi.

Take this copy and leave the rest of the papers with me.

Do not infer the finite paradigm from باقي. The principal parts remain بقى / يبقى.

Fixed discourse بقى

Discourse بقى is fixed. It can mark the next relevant stage, shift topic, press for an answer, coax, or show accumulated irritation. Its exact English rendering comes from the turn and intonation.

خلصنا الحسابات؛ نراجع بقى الملاحظات واحدة واحدة.

khallaṣna l-ḥisābāt; nirāgiʿ baʾa l-molāḥaẓāt wāḥda wāḥda.

We've finished the accounts; now let's review the notes one by one. (stage transition)

رد عليا بقى؛ أنا مستني من الصبح.

rodd ʿalayya baʾa; ʾana mistanni min iṣ-ṣobḥ.

Answer me already; I've been waiting since morning. (impatient)

Compare neutral chronological بعدين “after that” with stance-rich بقى. The dedicated particle page develops topic shift, coaxing, and prosody.

Short dialogue

أ: المشروع بقى جاهز للعرض ولا لسه؟

A: il-mashrūʿ baʾa gāhiz lil-ʿarḍ walla lissa?

A: Has the project become ready to present, or not yet?

ب: حيبقى جاهز بكرة؛ قوللي بقى العرض الساعة كام.

B: ḥa-yibʾa gāhiz bukra; ʾulli baʾa l-ʿarḍ is-sāʿa kām.

B: It'll be ready tomorrow; now tell me what time the presentation is.

The first بقى is an inflected perfect verb, the future حيبقى is a copular host, and the final fixed بقى shifts the turn to the next needed fact.

Register and variation

All three functions are mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal Arabic may use أصبح، صار for change of state and ثم، إذن for some discourse connections (formal/MSA), but none replaces every use. Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, Delta, Alexandrian, class-, age-, and community-linked varieties differ in ق realization and discourse frequency (regional/social). A learned /q/ is a marked formal or performance choice here. Drama may lengthen discourse بقى to stage pleading or annoyance (performance language).

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving the weak verb uninflected.

❌ أختي بقى مديرة الفرع السنة اللي فاتت.

Incorrect for the intended verbal reading—feminine ‘became’ is بقت.

✅ أختي بقت مديرة الفرع السنة اللي فاتت.

ʾokhti baʾit mudīrit il-farʿ is-sana lli fātit.

My sister became the branch manager last year.

2. Using بيبقى as a universal present copula.

❌ المكتب بيبقى هادي دلوقتي.

Wrong for the intended one-time state ‘the office is quiet now’—بيبقى normally adds habitual or recurring force.

✅ المكتب هادي دلوقتي، بس بيبقى زحمة بعد الضهر.

il-maktab hādi dilwaʾti, bass biyibʾa zaḥma baʿd iḍ-ḍohr.

The office is quiet now, but it usually gets crowded in the afternoon.

3. Translating every discourse بقى as “became.”

❌ هات بقى معناها هات أصبحت.

Incorrect analysis—after a command, fixed بقى adds transition or insistence.

✅ وريني بقى الصور اللي اخترتها للعرض.

warrīni baʾa ṣ-ṣuwar illi ikhtartha lil-ʿarḍ.

Come on then, show me the photos you chose for the presentation.

4. Importing formal /q/ into the neutral Cairo paradigm.

الشغل بقى أسهل بعد التحديث.

ish-shoghl baʾa ʾashal baʿd it-taḥdīth.

ish-shoghl baqa ʾashal baʿd it-taḥdīth

Pronunciation/register mismatch—mainstream Cairo realizes ق as /ʾ/ here.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn بقى / بقيت / يبقى as a final-weak paradigm with Cairo /ʾ/.
  • Lexical بقى introduces a new state; future حيبقى also supplies ordinary nonpresent “be.”
  • Habitual بيبقى is not required in a present nominal sentence.
  • باقي means “remaining/the rest” in its common lexicalized uses; it does not replace the finite verb.
  • Fixed discourse بقى does not agree and contributes transition, coaxing, insistence, or irritation.
