Past and Future Copular Sentences

Egyptian present copular sentences normally have no verb: المكتب هادي “the office is quiet.” Past and explicitly marked future frames are different. The past uses an agreeing form of كان; a common Cairene future uses joined حـ plus an agreeing form of يبقى: المكتب كان هادي “the office was quiet,” المكتب حيبقى هادي “the office will be quiet.”

The support verb changes the time frame, while the predicate keeps its own type: noun identity, adjective, location phrase, عند possession, or فيه existence. This one architecture explains much more than memorizing separate translations of was, had, and there was. The inflectional details of the past verb are developed further under كان and past nominal sentences.

The three-way time contrast

Time frameEgyptian structureCore example
presentsubject + predicateالمكتب هادي
pastsubject + كان + predicateالمكتب كان هادي
explicit futuresubject + حـ + يبقى + predicateالمكتب حيبقى هادي

المكتب هادي النهارده عشان نص الفريق أجازة.

il-maktab hādi n-nahārda ʿashān noṣṣ il-farīʾ ʾagāza.

The office is quiet today because half the team is off.

المكتب كان هادي امبارح قبل الاجتماع.

il-maktab kān hādi imbāriḥ ʾabl il-igtimāʿ.

The office was quiet yesterday before the meeting.

المكتب حيبقى هادي بكرة بعد ما الضيوف يمشوا.

il-maktab ḥayibʾa hādi bokra baʿd ma ḍ-ḍuyūf yimshu.

The office will be quiet tomorrow after the guests leave.

English has a form of be in all three. Egyptian marks the present with zero, the past with كان, and the explicit future with a future-marked imperfect.

💡
Do not ask for the Egyptian word for English be. Ask which time frame and predicate type you are building.

Rule 1: inflect كان for the past subject

كان is a hollow verb with real person agreement. The high-frequency Cairene forms are:

SubjectPast formReading
أنا / إنتكُنْتْkont
إنتيكُنْتِيkonti
هوكَانْkān
هيكَانِتْkānit
إحناكُنَّاkunna
إنتواكُنْتُواkontu
هماكَانُواkānu

أنا كنت مسؤول عن الحجز السنة اللي فاتت.

ʾana kont masʾūl ʿan il-ḥagz is-sana lli fātit.

I was responsible for the booking last year. (male speaker)

ريم كانت مديرة الفرع قبل ما تنتقل للقاهرة.

Rīm kānit modīrit il-farʿ ʾabl ma tintaʾil lil-ʾāhira.

Reem was the branch manager before she moved to Cairo.

إحنا كنا في نفس المدرسة وإحنا صغيرين.

ʾiḥna kunna fi nafs il-madrasa wi-ʾiḥna ṣughayyarīn.

We were at the same school when we were young.

The noun or adjective after كان takes no MSA case ending. It stays an Egyptian predicate and agrees normally where agreement is visible.

Rule 2: build the explicit future with حـ + يبقى

The future prefix joins the imperfect form. A practical Cairene paradigm is:

SubjectFuture formReading
أناحَبْقَىḥabʾa
إنتحَتِبْقَىḥatibʾa
إنتيحَتِبْقِيḥatibʾi
هوحَيِبْقَىḥayibʾa
هيحَتِبْقَىḥatibʾa
إحناحَنِبْقَىḥanibʾa
إنتواحَتِبْقُواḥatibʾu

بعد التدريب حبقى مسؤول عن الفريق الجديد.

baʿd it-tadrīb ḥabʾa masʾūl ʿan il-farīʾ il-gidīd.

After the training, I’ll be responsible for the new team. (male speaker)

الشهر الجاي حتبقي مديرة المشروع.

ish-shahr il-gayy ḥatibʾi modīrit il-mashrūʿ.

Next month you’ll be the project manager. (to a woman)

بعد النقل حنبقى أقرب لمحطة المترو.

baʿd in-naʾl ḥanibʾa ʾaʾrab li-maḥaṭṭit il-mitro.

After the move, we’ll be closer to the metro station.

يبقى also has lexical meanings such as “remain” and “become,” and present بيبقى often has habitual, generic, or conditional force. It is not a present copula to insert everywhere. Future حيكون is also used, especially in careful, professional, or more MSA-adjacent speech; this page uses productive colloquial حيبقى as its active baseline.

Rule 3: keep predicate agreement separate from copular agreement

Human plural subjects take plural كانوا / حيبقوا and plural predicates. Ordinary nonhuman plurals commonly take feminine-singular كانت / حتبقى and a feminine-singular predicate.

المتدربين كانوا مستعدين يبدأوا بدري.

il-mitdarribīn kānu mistaʿiddīn yibdaʾu badri.

The trainees were ready to start early. (human plural agreement)

الطلبات كانت جاهزة، بس الموظف ماخدهاش.

iṭ-ṭalabāt kānit gāhza, bass il-mowaẓẓaf ma-khad-hāsh.

The applications were ready, but the employee didn’t take them. (nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement)

النسخ الجديدة حتبقى متاحة على الموقع بكرة.

in-nosakh il-gidīda ḥatibʾa motāḥa ʿala l-mawʾiʿ bokra.

The new copies will be available on the website tomorrow. (nonhuman plural future)

English hides adjective agreement. Egyptian asks you to track both the time-support verb and the predicate’s agreement behavior.

Rule 4: possession and existence use the same time frames

Past كان and future يبقى can frame عند possession and فيه existence. In possessor-first and existential frames, masculine singular support is common because the following noun is newly introduced rather than a preceding subject controller.

كان عندي وقت أتمرن كل يوم قبل ما أغير الشغل.

kān ʿandi waʾt ʾatmaran koll yōm ʾabl ma ʾaghayyar ish-shoghl.

I had time to exercise every day before I changed jobs.

ماكانش فيه مواصلات كتير بعد نص الليل.

makānsh fīh mowāṣalāt kitīr baʿd noṣṣ il-lēl.

There wasn’t much transportation after midnight.

قريب حيبقى عندنا فرع تاني في الجيزة.

ʾarīb ḥayibʾa ʿandina farʿ tāni fi l-Gīza.

Soon we’ll have another branch in Giza.

الشتا الجاي حيبقى فيه أتوبيسات أكتر للجامعة.

ish-shita l-gayy ḥayibʾa fīh ʾotobīsāt ʾaktar lil-gāmʿa.

Next winter there’ll be more buses to the university.

Rule 5: negate the time-support verb, not the predicate mechanically

Neutral past negation surrounds كان with ما...ش: ماكنتش، ماكانش، ماكانتش، ماكناش، ماكنتوش، ماكانوش. A future copular clause commonly takes independent مش before the future verb.

ماكنتش فاضي لما اتصلت بيا.

ma-kontish fāḍi lamma ittaṣalt biyya.

I wasn’t free when you called me. (male speaker)

القاعة ماكانتش كبيرة كفاية لكل الناس.

il-ʾāʿa ma-kānitsh kibīra kifāya li-koll in-nās.

The hall wasn’t large enough for everyone.

المحل مش حيبقى مفتوح يوم الجمعة.

il-maḥall mish ḥayibʾa maftūḥ yōm il-gomʿa.

The shop won’t be open on Friday.

كان مش مفتوح can focus or quote the negative predicate “not open,” but ordinary “wasn’t open” is ماكانش مفتوح. The difference is information structure, not free alternation.

💡
Put neutral past negation on كان itself: ماكانش جاهز. For an explicit future negative, put مش before the future verb: مش حيبقى جاهز.

Rule 6: questions preserve the copular frame

Yes–no questions use the same order with question intonation. Question words normally remain where the requested predicate information belongs.

كان الاجتماع مفيد بالنسبة لك؟

kān il-igtimāʿ mofīd bin-nisba lak?

Was the meeting useful for you? (to a man)

حتبقي فاضية إمتى الأسبوع الجاي؟

ḥatibʾi fāḍya imta l-ʾusbūʿ il-gayy?

When will you be free next week? (to a woman)

كان عندكم كام موظف في الفرع القديم؟

kān ʿandukum kām mowaẓẓaf fi l-farʿ il-ʾadīm?

How many employees did you have at the old branch?

A short Cairo exchange

أ: كنتي مشغولة امبارح لما كلمتك؟

A: konti mashghūla imbāriḥ lamma kallimtik?

A: Were you busy yesterday when I called you?

ب: أيوه، بس بكرة حبقى فاضية بعد الضهر.

B: ʾaywa, bass bokra ḥabʾa fāḍya baʿd iḍ-ḍohr.

B: Yes, but tomorrow I’ll be free in the afternoon. (woman speaking)

The first-person future verb does not mark gender; feminine فاضية does.

Register and variation

The كان paradigm and colloquial future حـ + يبقى are mainstream urban Cairene (informal/neutral). Formal MSA uses its own pronunciation, agreement, case system, and future strategies (formal). حيكون is also common in Egyptian, particularly in careful and professional styles, while حيبقى is highly productive in conversation. Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class, age, and community varieties differ in vowel realization and preference between the two verbs (regional/social).

Common Mistakes

Inserting بيكون into a neutral present state

❌ المكتب بيكون هادي دلوقتي.

Mismatched for a simple current observation; بيكون suggests a habitual, generic, or conditional pattern.

✅ المكتب هادي دلوقتي عشان الاجتماع خلص.

il-maktab hādi dilwaʾti ʿashān il-igtimāʿ khiliṣ.

The office is quiet now because the meeting ended.

Leaving a past state with zero copula

❌ امبارح القاعة فاضية بعد الغدا.

Incorrect for the intended past state; add كانت.

✅ امبارح القاعة كانت فاضية بعد الغدا.

imbāriḥ il-ʾāʿa kānit fāḍya baʿd il-ghada.

Yesterday the hall was empty after lunch.

Putting the future prefix on the past form

❌ بكرة حكان في المكتب.

Incorrect—حـ attaches to an imperfect form, not past كان.

✅ بكرة حبقى في المكتب من الساعة عشرة.

bokra ḥabʾa fi l-maktab min is-sāʿa ʿashara.

Tomorrow I’ll be at the office from ten.

Negating neutral past كان with مش

❌ المحل مش كان مفتوح الصبح.

Marked focus order, not the neutral past negative; ordinary negation wraps كان.

✅ المحل ماكانش مفتوح لما وصلنا.

il-maḥall makānsh maftūḥ lamma wiṣilna.

The shop wasn’t open when we arrived.

Forgetting agreement with a preceding human plural

❌ المتدربين كان جاهزين الساعة تسعة.

Incorrect—a preceding human plural requires كانوا.

✅ المتدربين كانوا جاهزين قبل الساعة تسعة.

il-mitdarribīn kānu gāhzīn ʾabl is-sāʿa tisʿa.

The trainees were ready before nine.

Key Takeaways

  • Present copular clauses normally use zero; past clauses use agreeing كان.
  • An explicit conversational future commonly uses joined حـ + يبقى.
  • The predicate keeps its type and agreement inside the past or future frame.
  • كان عندي / حيبقى عندي frame possession; كان فيه / حيبقى فيه frame existence.
  • Negate the past with ما...ش around كان and the future commonly with مش before the future verb.
