An Egyptian sentence does not need an overt verb in the present. A noun, adjective, participle, prepositional phrase, or full clause can serve as the predicate: the part that says what the topic is, what it is like, where it is, or what the problem consists of. English inserts is/are into all of these translations; mainstream Cairene normally uses a zero copula.
The fastest analysis is therefore to locate the predicate type first. That predicts agreement, present negation, past كان, and the most natural word order. The foundational pattern is reviewed on the present nominal sentence.
Diagnostic 1: a noun predicate classifies or identifies
A bare noun predicate normally gives a class, occupation, or role. A definite noun predicate identifies a unique person or thing and may use هو، هي، هما as a linker when the boundary would otherwise be unclear.
رانيا مترجمة في شركة أدوية
rānya mutargima fi shirkit ʾadwiya
Rania is a translator at a pharmaceutical company.
رانيا هي المترجمة المسؤولة عن الاجتماع
rānya hiyya l-mutargima l-masʾūla ʿan il-igtimāʿ
Rania is the translator responsible for the meeting. (definite identification)
The first مترجمة classifies Rania. In the second, linker هي separates the topic from a fully definite identifying phrase. It is not an all-purpose translation of English is.
Diagnostic 2: adjective and participle predicates agree
An adjective or participle describes a property or state and agrees with its subject. Human plurals normally use plural agreement; ordinary nonhuman plurals normally take feminine singular.
الموظفين جاهزين، بس القاعة لسه مقفولة
il-muwaẓẓafīn gāhzīn, bass il-ʾāʿa lissa maʾfūla
The employees are ready, but the room is still closed.
الأسعار الجديدة عالية ومش مناسبة لينا
il-ʾasʿār il-gidīda ʿālya wi-mish munāsba lena
The new prices are high and don’t suit us. (nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement)
English ready, closed, high, and suitable do not reveal gender or number. Egyptian agreement belongs to the predicate even though there is no copular verb.
Diagnostic 3: a prepositional or adverbial phrase predicates location or possession
A place phrase can be the complete predicate of a known topic. Possession-like relations often use مع، عند، لـ plus a suffix.
المفاتيح في درج المكتب الصغير
il-mafātīḥ fi durg il-maktab iṣ-ṣughayyar
The keys are in the small office drawer.
نسخة العقد معايا لو المدير طلبها
nuskhit il-ʿaʾd maʿāya law il-mudīr ṭalabha
I have the contract copy with me if the manager asks for it. (literally, ‘the copy is with me’)
الاجتماع بكرة بعد الضهر
il-igtimāʿ bukra baʿd iḍ-ḍohr
The meeting is tomorrow afternoon. (bare time expression as predicate)
Topic-first المفاتيح في... answers where known keys are. A bare time expression such as بكرة بعد الضهر can also be a complete adverbial predicate. Predicate-first في الدرج مفاتيح would instead present keys as new; that marked order belongs to fronted predicates.
Diagnostic 4: a clause can be the predicate
After a topic noun such as المشكلة، المهم، الفكرة, an إن clause can state its content. English often inserts is that; Egyptian needs no separate present copula before the clause.
المشكلة إن الميعاد بدري على الناس
il-mushkila ʾinn il-mīʿād badri ʿala n-nās
The problem is that the time is too early for people.
المهم إن كل واحد يفهم دوره
il-mohimm ʾinn koll wāḥid yifham doru
What matters is that everyone understands their role.
The content clause completes the topic. This is not the same as an independent quote or advanced focus construction; المشكلة إن... is an ordinary predicate frame.
Rule 5: مش negates the present predicate
Independent مش comes before the noun, adjective, participle, PP, or clause content being denied.
سامح مش محاسب؛ هو مسؤول مبيعات
sāmiḥ mish muḥāsib; huwwa masʾūl mabīʿāt
Sameh isn’t an accountant; he’s a sales manager.
الموبايل مش في الشنطة؛ سيبته في العربية
il-mobāyl mish fi sh-shanṭa; sibto fi l-ʿarabiyya
The phone isn’t in the bag; I left it in the car.
Do not wrap these predicates in verbal ما...ش. There is no present copular verb inside them for the circumfix to attach to.
Rule 6: past and future states need overt support
The present zero copula does not extend automatically to past time. Add an agreeing form of كان for a past state or identity.
رانيا كانت مترجمة في سفارة قبل كده
rānya kānit mutargima fi sifāra ʾabl kida
Rania used to be a translator at an embassy.
المفاتيح كانت على الترابيزة الصبح
il-mafātīḥ kānit ʿala t-tarabeza ṣ-ṣubḥ
The keys were on the table this morning. (nonhuman plural with feminine-singular كانت)
المشكلة كانت إن مفيش وقت كفاية
il-mushkila kānit inn mafīsh waʾt kifāya
The problem was that there wasn’t enough time.
Here كان agrees with the outer subject, not with a noun buried inside the predicate. For a projected future state, Egyptian commonly uses the agreeing ḥa-future of يبقى rather than leaving the present zero copula unchanged.
رانيا حتبقى مسؤولة عن الفريق الجديد
rānya ḥatibʾa masʾūla ʿan il-farīʾ il-gidīd
Rania will be responsible for the new team.
Rule 7: questions keep the predicate structure
Yes/no questions use statement order with question intonation. A question word can itself occupy the predicate slot.
المدير موجود في المكتب؟
il-mudīr mawgūd fi l-maktab?
Is the manager in the office?
المقابلة إمتى وفين؟
il-moʾābla ʾimta wi-fen?
When and where is the interview?
There is no auxiliary to invert. Formal هل can introduce a formal yes/no question (formal), but it is not required in everyday Cairo.
A short contextual exchange
المكان الجديد عامل إيه؟
il-makān il-gidīd ʿāmil ʾeh?
What’s the new place like?
واسع ومريح، وفيه أوضة اجتماعات كبيرة
wāsiʿ wi-murīḥ, wi-fīh ʾoḍit igtimāʿāt kibīra
It’s spacious and comfortable, and there’s a large meeting room.
كان زحمة وقت ما رحت؟
kān zaḥma waʾt ma ruḥt?
Was it crowded when you went?
لأ، كان فاضي وهادي
laʾ, kān fāḍi wi-hādi
No, it was empty and quiet.
The answer can omit an overt subject because the place remains the active topic. The predicates and كان still make complete clauses.
Register and variation
Formal MSA also has present nominal sentences, but its case system, agreement details, and formal clause vocabulary are not the ordinary Cairene paradigm (formal). Newsreading, sermons, official speeches, and staged drama may code-switch. Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class, age, and community repertoires vary in vowels, particles, and preferred lexical predicates (regional/social); the zero-copula analysis remains basic.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting an English-style present copula.
❌ رانيا بتكون مترجمة في الشركة
Incorrect for a neutral current occupation—بتكون adds a habitual or conditional reading.
✅ رانيا مترجمة وبتشتغل هنا من سنتين
rānya mutargima wi-bitishtaghal hina min sanaten
Rania is a translator and has worked here for two years.
2. Treating a prepositional predicate as a fragment.
❌ جملة «الملف على المكتب» ناقصها فعل
Incorrect analysis—على المكتب is a complete present predicate.
✅ الملف على المكتب جنب اللابتوب
il-malaff ʿala l-maktab ganb il-lābtob
The file is on the desk beside the laptop.
3. Omitting كان for a past state.
❌ امبارح المكتب فاضي طول اليوم
Incorrect for the intended past state—add كان.
✅ امبارح المكتب كان فاضي طول اليوم
imbāriḥ il-maktab kān fāḍi ṭūl il-yom
Yesterday the office was empty all day.
4. Using verbal negation on an adjective.
❌ الأسعار ماعاليةش
Incorrect—an adjective predicate takes independent مش.
✅ الأسعار مش عالية الأسبوع ده
il-ʾasʿār mish ʿālya l-ʾusbūʿ da
Prices aren’t high this week.
Key Takeaways
- Nouns, adjectives, participles, PPs, and clauses can all be complete predicates.
- Present nominal predicates normally use zero copula and مش for negation.
- Adjective and participle predicates still agree.
- Past reference needs agreeing كان.
- Questions preserve the same predicate structure rather than adding English-style inversion.
