Egyptian بعدين and وبعد كده both move a story or procedure to a later stage: “then,” “afterward,” or “after that.” Unlike plain و, they explicitly order events; unlike فـ, they do not inherently present the later event as an immediate consequence.
The forms are discourse expressions, not simple one-word replacements for English then. بعدين can stand at the beginning of a new sentence or follow a pause. وبعدين attaches و to it. وبعد كده literally frames the next clause as “and after that,” with كده referring back to the preceding stage.
Rule 1: use them to mark a genuinely later stage
In a past narrative, perfect verbs normally present completed steps. بعدين or وبعد كده tells the listener that the second step comes after the first, often with some interval or change of phase.
khallaṣna l-ghada, wi-baʿdēn nizilna nitmashsha.
We finished lunch, and then we went down for a walk.
rāgaʿna l-ʿaʾd, wi-baʿd kida maḍēna n-noskhatēn.
We reviewed the contract, and after that we signed both copies.
The connector orders the clauses; the perfect verbs make each stage bounded. Plain و would still allow a sequential reading, but it would not foreground the transition.
Rule 2: maintain or change the subject explicitly
With the same subject, the later clause can begin directly with its verb. With a different subject, state the new subject after the connector.
ḥaṭṭēt il-ghasīl fi l-ghassāla, wi-baʿdēn shaghghaltha.
I put the laundry in the washing machine, and then I turned it on.
ʾana khallaṣt il-ʿarḍ, wi-baʿd kida Mona sharaḥit il-ʾarʾām.
I finished the presentation, and after that Mona explained the figures.
In the first, first-person agreement continues and ـها refers to the washing machine. In the second, منى blocks any assumption that the original speaker also explained the figures.
Rule 3: choose aspect for the kind of sequence
Past perfect is common in one-off stories. In routines, بـ-imperfect forms present recurring stages. In instructions, imperatives or bare imperfect forms can sequence actions that have not happened yet.
kull yōm būṣal il-ʾawwil, wi-baʿdēn baftaḥ il-ʾēmēl.
Every day I arrive first, and then I open my email.
sakhkhan il-forn, wi-baʿd kida ḥoṭṭ iṣ-ṣīniyya guwwāh.
Preheat the oven, and then put the tray inside it. (to a man)
ḥa-nikhallaṣ il-igtimāʿ, wi-baʿdēn ḥa-nibʿatlak il-mulakhkhaṣ.
We’ll finish the meeting, and then we’ll send you the summary. (to a man)
Matching aspect is not a mechanical requirement: it follows the intended time frame. What is wrong is switching to a perfect form inside a habitual chain without creating a real one-time event.
Rule 4: negative later steps need their own negation
The connector orders propositions but does not change their polarity. Use verbal ما...ش, predicate مش, or existential مفيش inside the later clause.
ittaṣalt bīh, wi-baʿdēn ma-baʿatsh ir-risāla.
I called him, and then I didn’t send the message.
dakhalna l-maṭʿam, wi-baʿd kida laʾēna mafīsh tarabēza fāḍya.
We went into the restaurant, and then found that there wasn’t a free table.
The second clause reports a later discovery; مفيش negates existence within what was discovered. Do not attach -ش to بعدين.
Rule 5: clause order is part of the meaning
These connectors establish chronology. Reversing the clauses changes the story or produces an impossible order.
dafaʿt il-ḥisāb, wi-baʿdēn kharagt min il-kāfēh.
I paid the bill, and then left the café.
kharagt min il-kāfēh, wi-baʿdēn iftakart ʾinni ma-dafaʿtish.
I left the café, and then remembered that I hadn’t paid.
The second sentence is perfectly possible, but it tells a different story. The explicit connector makes that ordering non-negotiable.
as a conversational move
With question intonation, وبعدين؟ asks “And then?” It can invite continuation, demand the point of a story, or—under sharp intonation—challenge an ongoing situation: “How long is this going to continue?” Context and delivery determine the force.
ʾābilt il-modīr imbāriḥ. wi-baʿdēn?
I met the manager yesterday. And then what happened?
kull yōm nafs it-taʾkhīr; wi-baʿdēn baʾa?
It’s the same delay every day—how long is this going to go on?
The second is pragmatic (informal), not a literal request for the next event. بقى adds impatience or insistence here; it is not part of the neutral sequence connector.
A brief narrative
rakibna l-mitro laḥadd il-ʿAtaba, wi-baʿdēn ghayyarna l-khaṭṭ, wi-baʿd kida mishīna khams daʾāyiʾ laḥadd il-fondoʾ.
We took the metro to Ataba, then changed lines, and after that walked five minutes to the hotel.
The alternation avoids monotonous repetition while preserving three ordered stages. It does not claim that changing lines caused the walk; it only locates the walk later.
Punctuation, register, and variation
A comma ، commonly separates the completed stage from وبعدين / وبعد كده. In rapid messaging, speakers may begin a new line with بعدين. Both are normal. Do not use a Latin question mark after وبعدين؟.
Formal MSA ثم signals sequence (formal) and is natural in formal prose, ceremonial speech, or deliberate code-switching, but it sounds elevated in an ordinary Cairo anecdote. بعد ذلك is likewise formal. بعدها occurs across registers, while بعدين and وبعد كده are central to everyday Egyptian (informal/neutral).
Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties may differ in vowels and preferred sequencing particles (regional/social). Comic and dramatic performance often stretches وبعدين؟ for effect (performance language); neutral speech need not copy that delivery.
Common Mistakes
Using بعدين for simple addition
Wrong for a simple list—بعدين unnecessarily turns the purchases into separate stages.
ishtarēt ʿēsh wi-gibna min nafs il-maḥall.
I bought bread and cheese from the same shop.
Hiding a change of subject
Incorrect for the intended subject switch—the second verb defaults to the same first-person subject.
ʾana gahhazt il-malaf, wi-baʿd kida Hoda baʿatito lil-ʿamīl.
I prepared the file, and after that Hoda sent it to the client.
Breaking a habitual aspect chain
Incorrect for the intended routine—the perfect فتحت describes a completed event.
kull ʾusbūʿ binrāgiʿ iṭ-ṭalabāt, wi-baʿdēn binrattibha.
Every week we review the requests and then organize them.
Key Takeaways
- بعدين and وبعد كده explicitly move discourse to a later stage.
- Keep the subject implicit when it continues; state it when it changes.
- Use perfect for one-off past steps, بـ-imperfect for routines, and commands for instructions.
- Negate the later clause with its own ما...ش, مش, or مفيش.
can request continuation or, with marked intonation, express impatience.
