Sequencing Commands with وبعدين and فـ

Egyptian instructions are not just lists of imperatives. و links closely coordinated actions, وبعدين marks an explicit next step, and prefixed فـ introduces a prompt consequence or result. Compare “open the file and read it,” “open the file and then send it,” and “press the button, so/then the door will open.”

The connector does not replace verbal grammar. Every command still agrees with the addressee, clitics stay attached, and a predicted result uses the appropriate b-, bare, or حـ form rather than an imperative automatically.

For the forms inside each step, review imperative gender and number forms; this page focuses on how speakers package several steps into one coherent instruction.

A practical connector map

ConnectorCore jobTypical structure
وadds a closely linked actioncommand + و + command
وبعدينopens the next ordered stagecommand، وبعدين + command
فـmarks an immediate consequence/resultcommand، فـ + result clause

These meanings overlap at the edges, but they are not interchangeable. وبعدين tells the listener to advance to a later step; فـ presents what follows as flowing from the first action.

Rule 1: use و for tightly coordinated commands

When two actions form one compact task, و is often enough.

افتح الرسالة واقراها كويس.

iftaḥ ir-risāla wi-ʾrāha kuwayyis.

Open the message and read it carefully.

خدي المفتاح واقفلي الباب وراكي.

khodi l-miftāḥ wi-ʾfili l-bāb warāki.

Take the key and close the door behind you. (to a woman)

قوموا اغسلوا إيديكم وتعالوا ناكل.

ʾūmu ighsilu ʾīdīkum wi-taʿālu nākul.

Get up, wash your hands, and come eat. (to a group)

The second and third commands still show feminine or plural agreement. English can leave the addressee implicit across a list; Egyptian repeats agreement on every verb.

Rule 2: use وبعدين for an explicit next step

وبعدين separates stages and answers “what next?” It is especially useful in directions, recipes, software help, and explanations (everyday/instructional).

افتح الملف، وبعدين اختار الصورة.

iftaḥ il-malaf, wi-baʿdēn ikhtār iṣ-ṣūra.

Open the file, then choose the picture.

اخلطي المكونات، وبعدين سيبي العجين يرتاح.

ikhlaṭi l-mukawwināt, wi-baʿdēn sībi l-ʿagīn yirtāḥ.

Mix the ingredients, then let the dough rest. (to a woman)

راجعوا الأسامي، وبعدين ابعتوهالي.

rāgiʿu l-ʾasāmi, wi-baʿdēn ibʿatūhāli.

Check the names, then send them to me. (to a group)

In the last example, plural addressee -وا, nonhuman-plural object -ها, and recipient -لي remain in one command word.

💡
Use وبعدين when reversing the two steps would change the procedure. It explicitly tells the listener that the second stage follows the first.

A gender-and-number sequence paradigm

AddresseeTwo-step instruction
masculine singularافتح الملف، وبعدين ابعته
feminine singularافتحي الملف، وبعدين ابعتيه
pluralافتحوا الملف، وبعدين ابعتوه

The connector stays the same; both commands and the attached object change with the addressee.

Rule 3: use فـ for a consequence, not merely another item

Spoken Cairene فـ can attach to the following word and present a result that follows promptly from complying with the instruction. The result clause may be future because it predicts what will happen next.

دوس على الزر، فالباب حيفتح لوحده.

dūs ʿala z-zirr, fa-l-bāb ḥa-yiftaḥ liwaḥdo.

Press the button, and the door will open by itself.

حط الكارت هنا، فحتظهرلك البيانات.

ḥoṭṭ il-kārt hina, fa-ḥa-tiẓharlak il-bayānāt.

Put the card here, and your details will appear.

The first verb is imperative; the result has حـ because it predicts a later event. Omitting حـ would change the aspect/mood interpretation. Formal instructions may use ثم or more formal result connectors (formal/MSA); وبعدين and clitic فـ are natural in ordinary Egyptian.

Rule 4: negative sequencing marks the forbidden boundary

Place ما...ش around the command whose action is prohibited. A قبل ما clause can state the condition that must be completed first.

احفظ الملف، وبعدين اقفل البرنامج.

iḥfaẓ il-malaf, wi-baʿdēn iʾfil il-barnāmig.

Save the file, then close the program.

ماتقفلش البرنامج قبل ما تحفظ الملف.

ma-tiʾfilsh il-barnāmig ʾabl ma tiḥfaẓ il-malaf.

Don’t close the program before you save the file.

This positive-to-negative pair encodes the same ordering from two perspectives: a next-step instruction versus a prohibition against acting too early.

A time-context minimal pair

افتح الطلب وبعدين راجعه دلوقتي.

iftaḥ iṭ-ṭalab wi-baʿdēn rāgiʿho dilwaʾti.

Open the application and then review it now.

حتفتح الطلب وبعدين حتراجعه بكرة.

ḥa-tiftaḥ iṭ-ṭalab wi-baʿdēn ḥa-tirāgiʿho bokra.

You’ll open the application and then review it tomorrow.

The sequence relation stays constant. Imperatives frame instructions now; joined حـ frames two predicted future actions.

Social force and longer procedures

A long chain of bare imperatives can sound efficient in a recipe or urgent task but bossy in a favor. Add لو سمحت، ممكن، ياريت, or an inclusive form such as خلينا when cooperation matters. For more than three stages, signposting with أول حاجة، بعد كده، في الآخر is easier to follow than repeating و.

لو سمحتي افتحي الرابط، وبعدين ابعتيلي صورة للشاشة.

law samaḥti iftaḥi r-rābiṭ, wi-baʿdēn ibʿatīli ṣūra lish-shāsha.

Please open the link, then send me a screenshot. (to a woman)

💡
In a procedure, connector choice tells the listener whether the next clause is another task, a later stage, or a predicted result. Preserve that distinction in translation.

A two-turn Cairo dialogue

أعمل إيه بعد ما أفتح الرابط؟

ʾaʿmil ēh baʿd ma ʾaftaḥ ir-rābiṭ?

What should I do after I open the link?

دوس على زر التأكيد، وبعدين استنى لحد ما الصفحة تفتح.

dūs ʿala zirr it-taʾkīd, wi-baʿdēn istanna laḥadd ma ṣ-ṣafḥa tiftaḥ.

Press the confirm button, then wait for the page to load.

Common Mistakes

Keeping b- on sequenced commands

❌ بتفتح الملف وبعدين بتبعته.

Incorrect as direct instructions—these are b-imperfect statements, not imperatives.

✅ افتح الملف وبعدين ابعته.

iftaḥ il-malaf wi-baʿdēn ibʿatho.

Open the file, then send it.

Marking agreement only on the first command

❌ افتحي الملف وبعدين ابعته.

Incorrect—the second command must also agree with the female addressee.

✅ افتحي الملف وبعدين ابعتيه.

iftaḥi l-malaf wi-baʿdēn ibʿatīh.

Open the file, then send it. (to a woman)

Using وبعدين when no ordering is intended

❌ خد قلم وبعدين ورقة.

Awkward for two jointly needed items—وبعدين falsely presents a later stage.

✅ خد قلم وورقة.

khod ʾalam wi-waraʾa.

Take a pen and a sheet of paper.

Writing clitic فـ separately

❌ دوس هنا، ف حتشوف النتيجة.

Incorrect—resultative فـ attaches to the following word.

✅ دوس هنا، فحتشوف النتيجة.

dūs hina, fa-ḥa-tishūf in-natīga.

Press here, and you’ll see the result.

Separating an object clitic in the second step

❌ افتح الملف وبعدين ابعت ه.

Incorrect—the object pronoun attaches to its command.

✅ افتح الملف وبعدين ابعته.

iftaḥ il-malaf wi-baʿdēn ibʿatho.

Open the file, then send it.

Key Takeaways

  • و coordinates closely linked actions; وبعدين marks a later step.
  • Prefixed فـ introduces a prompt consequence or result.
  • Repeat feminine or plural agreement on every command.
  • Use حـ when the following clause predicts a future result rather than commands it.
  • Keep conjunctions, object pronouns, and negative -ش attached where Egyptian writes them together.
