Everyday Cairene فضل / يفضل fiḍil / yifḍal means “remain, stay, keep doing.” It holds a state, location, or activity across time: فضل ساكت “he stayed quiet,” فضل في المكتب “he stayed at the office,” فضل يشتغل “he kept working.” This continuation viewpoint contrasts with بقى “become,” which introduces a new state.
The broader become-versus-remain contrast places this verb in the copular system. Here the focus is the complete paradigm and the exact complement frames of فضل itself.
Several high-frequency forms share the same unvocalized letters and must not be collapsed. فاضل fāḍil means “remaining/left”; doubled فضّل faḍḍal means “prefer”; and اتفضل itfaḍḍal is the polite “go ahead/please/here you are.” Pointing and romanization make the differences visible, but natural context must do that work in ordinary writing.
Complete practical paradigm
The useful principal parts are فِضِلْ / يِفْضَلْ fiḍil / yifḍal. The perfect has i–i; the imperfect changes to i–a. This vowel pairing is lexical and should be memorized rather than generated from the English gloss.
| Person | Perfect | Bare imperfect | b-imperfect | ḥa-future |
|---|---|---|---|---|
fiḍilna fil-ʿiyāda laḥadd ma t-taḥālīl ṭilʿit.
We stayed at the clinic until the test results came out.
الأوضة دي بتفضل باردة حتى في أغسطس.
il-ʾōḍa di bitifḍal bārda ḥatta fi ʾughusṭus.
This room stays cool even in August.
المكتبة حتفضل مفتوحة لحد الساعة تسعة.
il-maktaba ḥa-tifḍal maftūḥa laḥadd is-sāʿa tisʿa.
The library will remain open until nine.
Three complement types
فضل is not ordinarily transitive. What follows describes the continuing situation, so learn three productive frames.
- فضل + adjective or participle maintains a state: فضل صاحي، فضلت مستنية.
- فضل + place phrase maintains a location: فضل في العربية، فضل عند أهله.
- فضل + bare imperfect maintains an activity: فضل يسأل، فضلت تراجع.
الطفل فضل صاحي لحد ما أبوه رجع.
iṭ-ṭifl fiḍil ṣāḥi laḥadd ma ʾabūh rigiʿ.
The child stayed awake until his father returned.
هي فضلت عند خالتها يومين بعد العملية.
hiyya fiḍlit ʿand khālitha yōmēn baʿd il-ʿamaliyya.
She stayed at her aunt's for two days after the operation.
فضل يسأل نفس السؤال لحد ما فهم الإجابة.
fiḍil yisʾal nafs is-suʾāl laḥadd ma fihim il-ʾigāba.
He kept asking the same question until he understood the answer.
The activity complement is bare. Perfect فضل already anchors the chain, so English “kept working” does not justify فضل بيشتغل in the compact continuation construction. A separate b-imperfect can occur only with a different discourse structure, not as the neutral selected complement.
Commands and negation
The literal commands are افضل ifḍal, افضلي ifḍali, and افضلوا ifḍalu: “stay/remain.” Negative commands use ماتفضلش and agreeing forms. Perfect and b-imperfect negatives use the normal circumfix.
افضلي هنا مع ماما لحد ما أرجع من الصيدلية.
ifḍali hina maʿ Māma laḥadd ma ʾargaʿ min iṣ-ṣēdaliyya.
Stay here with Mom until I get back from the pharmacy. (to one woman)
مافضلناش بره كتير عشان الجو قلب.
ma-fiḍilnāsh barra kitīr ʿashān il-gaww ʾilib.
We didn't stay outside long because the weather turned.
ماتفضلوش صاحيين بعد نص الليل عشان المدرسة.
ma-tifḍalūsh ṣāḥyīn baʿd noṣṣ il-lēl ʿashān il-madrasa.
Don't stay awake past midnight because of school. (to a group)
Because finite فضل is not a direct-object verb, do not attach an English-style object to it. In فضل مستنيها, ـها belongs to مستنيها “waiting for her,” not to فضل.
فضلت مستنياه قدام السينما نص ساعة.
fiḍlit mistanniyāh ʾuddām is-sīnima noṣṣ sāʿa.
She kept waiting for him in front of the cinema for half an hour.
فاضل: what remains
Participle-like فاضل fāḍil presents a quantity, person, or task as left or remaining. A following dative suffix identifies whose remaining allocation or time it is: فاضلنا أسبوع “we have a week left,” فاضله صفحتين “he has two pages left.” This suffix is not a direct object of the finite continuation verb.
فاضلنا تلات محطات وننزل.
fāḍilna talāt maḥaṭṭāt wi-ninzil.
We have three stops left before we get off.
فاضل لها امتحان واحد وتخلص السنة.
fāḍil laha imtiḥān wāḥid wi-tikhlaṣ is-sana.
She has one exam left and then she'll finish the year.
As a noun modifier, باقي often means “the rest of,” while فاضل predicates what is left. Their distribution overlaps semantically but not syntactically in every phrase.
Do not confuse فضل with فضّل “prefer”
Doubled Pattern II فضّل / بيفضّل faḍḍal / biyifaḍḍal means “prefer.” Ordinary unvocalized writing can hide the shadda, but the consonant length, imperfect vowels, and complement frame differ.
أنا بفضل أشتغل بدري، بس النهارده حافضل لحد متأخر.
ʾana bafaḍḍal ʾashtaghal badri, bass in-naharda ḥafḍal laḥadd mitʾakhkhar.
I prefer to work early, but today I'll stay until late.
The first verb has doubled ḍḍ and expresses preference; the second has the simple cluster fḍ and expresses continued presence.
اتفضل is a related but separate polite formula
اتفضل، اتفضلي، اتفضلوا itfaḍḍal, itfaḍḍali, itfaḍḍalu are Pattern V forms used to invite, grant permission, offer something, or yield the floor: “go ahead,” “come in,” “here you are,” “please.” They are not the imperative paradigm of فضل “remain.”
اتفضل ادخل؛ الدكتور مستنيك جوه.
itfaḍḍal idkhul; id-duktūr mistannīk guwwa.
Go ahead and come in; the doctor is waiting for you inside. (polite, to one man)
اتفضلوا القهوة، والسكر جنبكم.
itfaḍḍalu l-ʾahwa, wis-sokkar gambakum.
Please have the coffee; the sugar is beside you. (to a group)
This polite family is conventional and socially broad. Tone and setting determine whether English prefers “please,” “after you,” “come in,” or “here you are.”
Short dialogue
أ: فاضل قد إيه على دورنا؟
A: fāḍil ʾadd ʾēh ʿala dawrna?
A: How long is left until our turn?
ب: حوالي ربع ساعة؛ خلينا نفضل هنا عشان مانفوتوش.
B: ḥawāli robʿ sāʿa; khallīna nifḍal hina ʿashān ma-nfūtūsh.
B: About fifteen minutes; let's stay here so we don't miss it.
Register and variation
فضل / يفضل is the mainstream everyday Cairo continuation verb (informal/neutral). Formal ظلّ is common in news, essays, and prepared speech (formal/MSA-influenced). Other Arabic dialects distribute cognates of فضل، بقي، ظلّ differently, so a Levantine or formal choice should not be presented as unmarked Cairo (regional). The vowels and preferred constructions can vary across Alexandria, the Delta, Upper Egypt, Bedouin-associated and community varieties (regional/social). Service language may repeat اتفضل for warmth or deference (service/performance language).
Common Mistakes
1. Using بقى for persistence.
❌ بقى ساكن في نفس الشقة عشر سنين.
Wrong for the intended ‘remained living’—بقى naturally foregrounds becoming.
✅ فضل ساكن في نفس الشقة عشر سنين.
fiḍil sākin fi nafs ish-shaʾʾa ʿashar sinīn.
He remained in the same apartment for ten years.
2. Keeping b- on the selected activity.
❌ فضلت براجع الأرقام لحد الفجر.
Incorrect in the compact continuation chain—the activity complement after فضل is bare.
✅ فضلت أراجع الأرقام لحد الفجر.
fiḍilt ʾarāgiʿ il-ʾarʾām laḥadd il-fagr.
I kept reviewing the figures until dawn.
3. Confusing remain with prefer.
هو بيفضل في المكتب بعد ستة.
huwwa biyifḍal fil-maktab baʿd sitta.
huwwa biyifaḍḍal fil-maktab baʿd sitta
Pronunciation and meaning error—without doubled ḍ, this says he remains at the office after six, not that he prefers it.
4. Using افضل as the polite ‘go ahead.’
❌ افضل، ادخل المكتب.
Incorrect for the intended polite invitation—plain افضل means ‘stay/remain.’
✅ اتفضل، ادخل المكتب واقعد هنا.
itfaḍḍal, idkhul il-maktab wi-ʾoʿod hina.
Please come into the office and sit here. (to one man)
Key Takeaways
- Learn the lexical pair فِضِلْ / يِفْضَلْ and use it for persistence, not change into a state.
- Select an adjective/participle, place phrase, or bare imperfect according to what continues.
- فاضل predicates what is left; its dative suffix identifies who has that amount remaining.
- Keep فضل “remain,” فضّل “prefer,” and اتفضل “go ahead/please” distinct in sound and syntax.
