Verb–Preposition Government

Verb–preposition government means that a predicate conventionally selects a particular way to introduce its complement. Mainstream Cairene says فكر في “think about,” دور على “look for,” سأل عن “ask about,” and اتكلم مع “speak with.” English glosses cannot predict those choices: about, for, and with divide the semantic field differently.

The most effective learning unit is therefore not an isolated verb or preposition but a complete frame: رد على حد, زعل من حد, اهتم بحاجة, استنى حد. This page gives diagnostics and high-frequency families, not an exhaustive dictionary. Individual preposition pages explain their wider spatial meanings; the suffix overview covers host morphology in depth.

Diagnostic 1: retrieve the Egyptian frame before translating

Start with the intended Egyptian predicate, then supply the complement pattern it selects. Do not choose a preposition by translating the English one.

Egyptian frameNatural EnglishLikely English-driven error
فكر فيthink about / considerchoose عن from “about”
دور علىlook forchoose لـ from “for”
رد علىreply tochoose لـ from “to”
سأل عنask about / ask for someonechoose لـ from “for”
اهتم بـcare about / be interested inchoose في from “in”
زعل منbe upset with/atchoose مع from “with”
اتكلم معspeak with/to a personchoose لـ from “to”
استنى + direct objectwait foradd لـ because English has “for”

بفكر في العرض، بس لسه مارديتش على الشركة

bafakkar fil-ʿarḍ, bass lissa ma-raddētsh ʿala sh-sherka

I'm considering the offer, but I still haven't replied to the company. (informal)

استنيت المدير نص ساعة عشان أسأله عن المعاد

istannēt il-modīr noṣṣ sāʿa ʿashān ʾasʾalo ʿan il-miʿād

I waited for the manager for half an hour so I could ask him about the appointment. (informal)

The second sentence is a useful double warning: استنى takes a direct object, while سأل عن marks the topic of inquiry. English for/about does not supply the Egyptian syntax.

💡
Memorize a frame with one noun and one pronoun form: رد على الرسالة / رد عليها. This stores both government and the host-specific suffix.

A spatial scene built from lexical frames

Spatial meanings motivate many prepositions, but the verb still determines which relation matters. Imagine entering an unfamiliar office.

دخلت المكتب، بصيت على الخريطة، سألت عن الدور التاني، واتكلمت مع موظفة الاستقبال

dakhalt il-maktab, baṣṣēt ʿala l-kharīṭa, saʾalt ʿan id-dōr it-tāni, wi-tkallimt maʿ mowaẓẓafit il-istiʾbāl

I entered the office, looked at the map, asked about the second floor, and spoke with the receptionist. (informal scene)

دخل takes its destination directly here; بص على selects a visual target; سأل عن selects an inquiry topic; اتكلم مع selects an interlocutor. One physical scene does not produce one general “location preposition.”

Diagnostic 2: changing the preposition can change the role

With some verbs, several prepositions are possible because they introduce different participant roles. اتكلم مع منى names the interlocutor; اتكلم عن منى makes Mona the topic; اتكلم في المشكلة means discuss or engage with the issue.

اتكلمت مع منى عن الميزانية في آخر الاجتماع

itkallimt maʿ Mona ʿan il-mīzāneyya fi ʾākhir il-igtimāʿ

I spoke with Mona about the budget at the end of the meeting. (neutral)

دخلنا في تفاصيل التنفيذ بعد ما اتفقنا على السعر

dakhalna fi tafāṣīl it-tanfīz baʿd ma ittafaʾna ʿala s-siʿr

We got into the implementation details after agreeing on the price. (professional conversation)

This is not free variation. اتفق مع الشخص “agree with the person” and اتفق على الخطة “agree on the plan” assign different roles to their complements.

اتفقت مع المقاول على ميعاد التسليم

ittafaʾt maʿ il-moʾāwil ʿala mīʿād it-taslīm

I agreed with the contractor on the delivery date. (professional conversation)

Diagnostic 3: complement type can change the frame

A noun or pronoun may follow a selected preposition, while a content clause may use إن or a question word instead. Do not insert the nominal preposition blindly before every clause.

فكرت في الاقتراح وفكرت إننا نجربه أسبوع

fakkart fil-iʾtirāḥ wi-fakkart innina nigarrabo ʾusbūʿ

I considered the proposal and thought that we could try it for a week. (neutral)

The first complement is a noun introduced by في. The second is a content clause introduced by إن. Lexical government includes complement type, not only the choice among prepositions.

Host allomorphy: the preposition changes before suffixes

Once the complement is pronominal, it normally attaches to the selected preposition. Different hosts use different linking stems: فيه، عليه، عنه، معاه، ليه، بيه، منه. A learner cannot attach one invariant pronoun mechanically.

The full مع paradigm illustrates the principle:

PersonFormCairene readingFrame with اتكلم

kallimtha wi-tkallimt maʿāha ʿan il-moshkila bi-hodūʾ

I called her and spoke with her calmly about the problem. (informal)

The direct object on كلمتها and the suffixed preposition in معاها are different constructions. English “talked to her” can obscure that difference.

Diagnostic 4: relative clauses retain a resumptive preposition

English commonly strands a preposition: “the client I replied to,” “the issue we talked about.” Egyptian normally keeps the selected preposition inside the relative clause and attaches a suffix matching the head.

ده العميل اللي رديت عليه بعد ما راجعت طلبه

da l-ʿamīl illi raddēt ʿalēh baʿd ma rāgeʿt ṭalabo

This is the client I replied to after reviewing his request. (professional conversation)

دي المشكلة اللي سألنا عنها واتكلمنا فيها امبارح

di l-moshkila lli saʾalna ʿanha wi-tkallimna fīha imbāriḥ

This is the issue we asked about and discussed yesterday. (neutral)

The two suffixes refer to the same feminine head but preserve two different frames: سأل عن and اتكلم في. Resumption is not redundant; it is where government becomes visible.

Diagnostic 5: distinguish government from productive spatial meaning

Sometimes a preposition retains a transparent spatial sense; sometimes it is lexically selected; often both contribute. حط الكتاب على الترابيزة has a clear surface goal. In وافق على الخطة, no literal surface remains, but على is still required by the conventional frame.

وافقت على الخطة، بس اعترضت على ميعاد التنفيذ

wāfeʾt ʿala l-khuṭṭa, bass iʿtaraḍt ʿala mīʿād it-tanfīz

I approved the plan, but objected to the implementation date. (professional conversation)

Both predicates select على, despite opposite evaluations. A vague claim that على always means support cannot predict these frames; lexical knowledge is unavoidable.

Register and variation

Government can differ across Egyptian, MSA, and other Arabic varieties. Formal MSA بحث عن “search for” contrasts with conversational Cairene دور على; everyday كلم حد “call/speak to someone” contrasts with more formal اتصل بـ “contact.” Code-switching may bring an MSA verb together with its MSA frame (formal/professional). That is structured register choice, not random error.

بحث الفريق عن بديل مناسب

baḥatha l-farīqu ʿan badīlin munāsibin

The team searched for a suitable alternative. (formal MSA delivery)

الفريق دور على بديل يناسب الميزانية

il-farīʾ dawwar ʿala badīl yināsib il-mīzāneyya

The team looked for an alternative that fit the budget. (ordinary Egyptian)

Regional, class, age, community, and performance varieties may prefer another verb or frame. Label that variation instead of treating every non-Cairene choice as a mistake; the production baseline here remains mainstream urban Cairo.

Common Mistakes

❌ بدور للشاحن من الصبح

Incorrect in the Cairene frame—دور takes على, despite English ‘look for.’

✅ بدور على الشاحن من قبل الفطار

badawwar ʿala sh-shāḥin min ʾabl il-fiṭār

I've been looking for the charger since before breakfast. (informal)

❌ رديت للعميل في آخر اليوم

Incorrect for ‘replied to the client’—رد selects على for its addressee.

✅ رديت على العميل قبل ما المكتب يقفل

raddēt ʿala l-ʿamīl ʾabl ma l-maktab yiʾfal

I replied to the client before the office closed. (neutral)

❌ اتكلمت مع ها عن الفاتورة

Incorrect—the pronoun suffix attaches to مع and triggers the host form معاها.

✅ اتكلمت معاها عن الفاتورة وبعتتلي نسخة

itkallimt maʿāha ʿan il-fātūra wi-baʿatitli noskha

I spoke with her about the invoice, and she sent me a copy. (informal)

❌ ده الموضوع اللي فكرنا طول الأسبوع

Incorrect for ‘the subject we thought about’—the relative clause has lost في plus its resumptive suffix.

✅ ده الموضوع اللي فكرنا فيه طول الأسبوع

da l-mawḍūʿ illi fakkarna fīh ṭūl il-ʾusbūʿ

This is the issue we thought about all week. (neutral)

❌ استنيت لأختي قدام السينما

Incorrect in mainstream Cairene—استنى takes the waited-for person as a direct object.

✅ استنيت أختي قدام السينما ربع ساعة

istannēt okhti ʾuddām is-sīnima robʿ sāʿa

I waited for my sister in front of the cinema for fifteen minutes. (informal)

Key Takeaways

Learn Egyptian valency as predicate + complement frame, including whether the complement is direct, prepositional, nominal, or clausal. Preserve host-specific suffix forms and resumptive prepositions in relatives. English glosses help with meaning but cannot choose among في، على، عن، من، مع، بـ، لـ or a direct object; lexical government must be learned.
