Egyptian speakers command overlapping colloquial and formal repertoires. A destination may appear with no overt preposition, with لـ, or with formal إلى; a topic may be introduced by everyday عن or official بشأن. These are not lists of interchangeable words. Predicate choice, construal, genre, and audience determine which combinations are natural.
This page takes mainstream Cairene conversation as its production baseline (informal) while treating code-switching as structured competence. A formal alternative is not automatically “better,” and a colloquial form is not defective MSA. The goal-preposition comparison gives the fuller spatial system behind the first contrast below.
Rule 1: compare complete constructions, not isolated prepositions
Three destination expressions can describe similar real-world motion while packaging it differently:
أنا رايح الجامعة أخلص ورق التسجيل
ʾana rāyiḥ il-gāmʿa ʾakhallaṣ waraʾ it-tasgīl
I’m going to the university to finish the registration paperwork.
بعتنا الأوراق للجامعة بالبريد
baʿatna l-ʾawrāʾ li-l-gāmʿa bi-l-barīd
We sent the papers to the university by mail.
توجه الوفد إلى الجامعة بعد الاجتماع
tawaggah il-wafd ʾila l-gāmʿa baʿd il-igtimāʿ
The delegation proceeded to the university after the meeting. (formal/news style)
With رايح, an unmarked destination is ordinary Cairo speech. بعت لـ selects لـ as the recipient/goal frame. توجه إلى is a formal lexical pairing (formal). Replacing only the preposition while holding every other word fixed can produce a register clash or an entirely different construction.
Rule 2: colloquial and formal topic frames divide labor
Everyday اتكلم عن introduces a topic. Formal reports and official correspondence often use تحدث عن، بشأن، بخصوص with their own syntax.
اتكلمنا عن مشكلة المواصلات طول الطريق
itkallimna ʿan mushkilit il-muwāṣalāt ṭūl iṭ-ṭarīʾ
We talked about the transportation problem the whole way.
الشركة بعتت بيان بخصوص مواعيد العمل الجديدة
ish-shirka baʿatit bayān bi-khuṣūṣ mawāʿīd il-ʿamal il-gidīda
The company sent a statement regarding the new working hours. (administrative style)
وردنا استفسار بشأن شروط التقديم
waradna stifsār bi-shaʾn shurūṭ it-taʾdīm
We received an inquiry concerning the application requirements. (formal)
بخصوص is widespread in work speech and semi-formal messages (neutral/professional). بشأن strongly cues official or edited language (formal). Neither simply replaces the selected عن after everyday اتكلم.
Rule 3: near-synonymous predicates keep different valency
Register often changes the predicate and its government together.
| Everyday frame | Formal/edited frame | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| دور على حاجة | بحث عن شيء | look/search for something |
| اتكلم عن الموضوع | تحدث عن الموضوع | speak about the topic |
| راح المكان | توجه إلى المكان | go/proceed to the place |
| سأل عن النتيجة | استفسر عن النتيجة | ask/inquire about the result |
بدور على نسخة أوضح من الصورة
badawwar ʿala nuskha ʾawḍaḥ min iṣ-ṣūra
I’m looking for a clearer copy of the picture.
الباحثة بتبحث عن أسباب التغيير في الاستعمال
il-bāḥitha bitibḥath ʿan ʾasbāb it-taghyīr fi l-istiʿmāl
The researcher is investigating the causes of the change in usage. (academic)
The formal lexeme بحث selects عن; everyday دور selects على. Choosing the more formal verb while keeping the colloquial verb’s preposition is not code-switching—it is a valency error.
Rule 4: source, goal, and viewpoint are different construals
A physical scene makes the contrast visible:
خرجت من البيت ورحت للمحطة وعديت على المخبز في السكة
kharagt min il-bet wi-ruḥt li-l-maḥaṭṭa wi-ʿaddet ʿala l-makhbaz fi s-sikka
I left the house, went to the station, and stopped by the bakery on the way.
من marks the source, لـ the goal, عدى على a conventional stop-by frame, and في the path setting. An English translation may use from, to, by, and on, but those English words do not predict the Egyptian distribution.
The speaker can choose a different construal:
جبت العقد من عند المحامي قبل ما أروح البنك
gibt il-ʿaʾd min ʿand il-muḥāmi ʾabl ma ʾarūḥ il-bank
I picked up the contract from the lawyer’s office before going to the bank.
من عند المحامي profiles the lawyer’s place or sphere, not merely the lawyer as a material source. The shorter من المحامي can instead foreground the lawyer as giver/source. These are meaning differences, not free stylistic alternants.
Rule 5: suffix shape itself carries register information
The ordinary Cairo لـ paradigm differs from formal MSA readings. The Egyptian forms below are the production target.
| Person | Cairo form | Cairene reading | Formal comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1sg | ليا | liyya | لي lī |
| 2msg | ليك | lek | لك laka |
| 2fsg | ليك | leki | لك laki |
| 3msg | ليه | leh | له lahu |
| 3fsg | ليها | leha | لها lahā |
| 1pl | لينا | lena | لنا lanā |
| 2pl | ليكو | leku | لكم lakum |
| 3pl | ليهم | lehum | لهم lahum |
القرار ده مناسب لينا ومش مناسب ليهم
il-ʾarār da munāsib lena wi-mish munāsib lehum
This decision suits us and doesn’t suit them.
Writing لكم while pronouncing a community’s ordinary Egyptian form is not inherently an error; Arabic spelling practices are register-sensitive. On this guide’s house system, ليكو transparently represents the mainstream Cairo reading (informal).
Register variation does not license an English-style gap in a relative clause. Everyday Cairo keeps the recipient suffix inside the verb complex:
دي الجهة اللي بعتنالها الأوراق
di l-giha lli baʿatnālha l-ʾawrāʾ
This is the organization we sent the papers to.
Formal الجهة التي أرسلنا إليها الأوراق shifts the relative pronoun, verb, and prepositional form together (formal). Writing colloquial بعتنا ل ها instead would not be a register choice: it would incorrectly separate the bound suffix.
Rule 6: cause, purpose, and instrument only partly overlap
Everyday عشان can introduce cause or purpose; بسبب normally introduces a nominal cause and sounds more expository; instrumental بـ introduces a means.
قفلنا الشباك عشان صوت الشارع عالي
ʾafalna sh-shubbāk ʿashān ṣot ish-shāriʿ ʿāli
We closed the window because the street noise was loud.
قفلنا الشباك بالمفتاح عشان الأطفال مايفتحوهوش
ʾafalna sh-shubbāk bi-l-miftāḥ ʿashān il-ʾaṭfāl ma-yiftaḥūhūsh
We locked the window with the key so the children wouldn’t open it.
The second عشان is purpose, not cause; بالمفتاح is the instrument. Similar English paraphrases do not collapse these semantic roles.
Social and regional variation
Style-shifting depends on speaker, audience, topic, and medium. News delivery, academic lectures, legal documents, customer-service scripts, and joking imitation can activate formal frames (formal/academic/performance). Everyday family and peer interaction favors colloquial frames (informal). Younger speakers and technical workplaces may also code-switch through English-derived nouns while preserving Egyptian prepositional grammar.
Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, and other community repertoires differ in vowel realization, suffix choices, and preferred lexical frames (regional: Egypt). No single “regional preposition swap” applies across all speakers. This page therefore teaches a Cairene baseline and labels formal competitors without presenting other Egyptian repertoires as mistakes.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping the English preposition with an Egyptian verb.
❌ بدور عن شقة قريبة من الشغل
Incorrect in the Cairo frame taught here—دور selects على, not English-like عن.
✅ بدور على شقة صغيرة قريبة من المترو
badawwar ʿala shaʾʾa ṣughayyara ʾarība min il-mitro
I’m looking for a small apartment near the metro.
2. Mixing a formal predicate with another predicate’s valency.
❌ الباحث بحث على النتائج القديمة
Incorrect—بحث ‘research/search’ selects عن in this use.
✅ الباحث بحث عن النتائج القديمة في الأرشيف
il-bāḥith baḥath ʿan in-natāyig il-ʾadīma fi l-ʾarshīf
The researcher searched for the old results in the archive. (formal/academic)
3. Doubling two competing goal markers.
❌ الوفد توجه إلى للمقر الجديد
Incorrect—formal توجه إلى already supplies the goal frame.
✅ الوفد توجه إلى المقر الجديد بعد المؤتمر
il-wafd tawaggah ʾila l-maʾarr il-gidīd baʿd il-muʾtamar
The delegation proceeded to the new headquarters after the conference. (formal)
4. Treating a register mismatch as a grammar improvement.
وردنا استفسار بشأن السعر
waradna stifsār bi-shaʾn is-siʿr
We received an inquiry regarding the price. Correct, but formal/administrative—not a universally better version of everyday سألونا عن السعر.
العملا سألونا عن السعر قبل ما يطلبوا
il-ʿomala saʾalūna ʿan is-siʿr ʾabl ma yiṭlibu
The customers asked us about the price before ordering. (informal/neutral)
Key Takeaways
- Compare complete predicate frames, not translations of isolated prepositions.
- Colloquial and formal alternatives differ in genre, construal, and sometimes valency.
- A formal option is not automatically more correct; a mismatched frame can still be ungrammatical.
- Cairo suffixes and zero-marked destinations belong to Egyptian grammar in their own right.
