عن ʿan connects two ideas that are oriented away from each other. In physical space it marks distance: بعيد عن النار “far from the fire.” In conversation it marks the topic set apart for discussion: اتكلمنا عن الشغل “we talked about work.” The same preposition belongs to lexical frames such as مسؤول عن “responsible for” and دافع عن “defend.”
English translations range across about, from, for, and no preposition. Learn the Egyptian frame as a unit. This is especially important in prepositional relatives, where عن must keep a suffix pointing back to the topic.
Rule 1: عن marks a topic
Speech, questions, stories, and information can be oriented toward a topic with عن.
اتكلمنا عن الشغل الجديد وإحنا في القهوة
itkallimna ʿan ish-shughl il-gidīd wi-ʾiḥna fi l-ʾahwa
We talked about the new job while we were at the café.
سألت البواب عن الشقة اللي فوق
saʾalt il-bawwāb ʿan ish-shaʾʾa lli foʾ
I asked the doorman about the apartment upstairs.
احكيلي عن أول يوم ليك في الجامعة
iḥkīli ʿan ʾawwil yom lek fi l-gāmʿa
Tell me about your first day at university.
The complement can be a person as a topic: سألت عن المدير can mean “I asked about/after the manager,” and context may yield natural English “I asked for the manager.” That translation does not turn عن into a universal equivalent of English for.
Rule 2: physical distance and avoidance use عن
With بعيد، بعد، ابعد, عن identifies the point from which distance is measured. This is not the same as source من: جاي من المحطة gives an origin, while بعيد عن المحطة gives separation.
A spatial scene
بعد الكرسي عن الدفاية وخلي الشنطة بعيد عنها
baʿʿid il-kursi ʿan id-daffāya wi-khalli sh-shanṭa baʿīd ʿanha
Move the chair away from the heater and keep the bag far from it.
ابعد عن الباب شوية عشان الناس تعدي
ibʿad ʿan il-bāb shuwayya ʿashān in-nās tiʿaddi
Move away from the door a little so people can pass.
This spatial sense motivates abstract separation too: مختلف عن “different from” and استغنى عن “do without.” The relationship is no longer literal movement, but the complement remains a reference point from which something differs or detaches.
التصميم النهائي مختلف عن النسخة القديمة
it-taṣmīm in-nihāʾi mukhtalif ʿan in-nuskha l-ʾadīma
The final design is different from the old version.
The suffix paradigm
عن attaches directly to a pronoun. Before vowel-initial singular suffixes and first-person plural, its final /n/ is doubled: عني ʿanni, عنك ʿannak/ʿannik, عنه ʿannu, عننا ʿanna. Before consonant-initial ـها، ـكو، ـهم, the /n/ remains single.
| Person | Written form | Cairene reading | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st singular | عني | ʿanni | about/away from me |
| 2nd masculine singular | عنك | ʿannak | about/away from you |
| 2nd feminine singular | عنك | ʿannik | about/away from you |
| 3rd masculine singular | عنه | ʿannu | about/away from him/it |
| 3rd feminine singular | عنها | ʿanha | about/away from her/it |
| 1st plural | عننا | ʿanna | about/away from us |
| 2nd plural | عنكو | ʿanku | about/away from you all |
| 3rd plural | عنهم | ʿanhum | about/away from them |
المدرس سأل عننا وعايز يعرف اتأخرنا ليه
il-mudarris saʾal ʿanna wi-ʿāyiz yiʿraf itʾakhkharna leh
The teacher asked about us and wants to know why we were late.
The final ليه illustrates a separate ambiguity: here it means “why,” not لـ + ـه “to him.” Syntax and context disambiguate it.
Plural عنكم ʿankum also occurs in conservative spelling and MSA-influenced styles; this page uses everyday Cairene عنكو ʿanku (informal).
Rule 3: predicates govern عن lexically
The topic and separation meanings extend through conventional predicate frames:
| Egyptian frame | Natural English | English mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| مسؤول عن | responsible for | English uses for |
| دافع عن | defend | English commonly uses no preposition |
| مختلف عن | different from | English uses from |
| استغنى عن | do without / dispense with | English changes the whole predicate |
هي مسؤولة عن الحسابات وبتراجعها كل أسبوع
hiyya masʾūla ʿan il-ḥisābāt wi-bitrāgiʿha kull ʾusbūʿ
She’s responsible for the accounts and reviews them every week.
المحامي دافع عن المتهم في المحكمة
il-muḥāmi dāfaʿ ʿan il-mittaham fi l-maḥkama
The lawyer defended the accused in court.
مانقدرش نستغنى عن المية في الحر ده
maniʾdarsh nistaghna ʿan il-mayya fi l-ḥarr da
We can’t do without water in this heat.
دور على “look for” is a useful contrast. Formal Arabic often uses بحث عن “search for” (formal), while mainstream conversational Cairo normally uses دور على. The shared English gloss does not make the prepositions interchangeable after the two different verbs.
Rule 4: relatives keep عنه, عنها, or عنهم
English leaves a gap after stranded about: “the proposal we talked about.” Egyptian keeps عن and attaches a suffix matching the head noun.
ده الموضوع الجديد اللي اتكلمنا عنه بعد الغدا
da l-mawḍūʿ il-gidīd illi tkallimna ʿannu baʿd il-ghada
This is the new subject we talked about after lunch.
دي المشكلة اللي سألتك عنها في العربية
di l-mushkila lli saʾaltak ʿanha fi l-ʿarabiyya
This is the problem I asked you about in the car.
The suffix is not redundant: it supplies the preposition’s local complement. Do not leave عن bare or delete the whole phrase by copying English.
Rule 5: distinguish عن from من
Both can translate English from, but their roles differ. من normally marks source or origin; عن marks distance, avoidance, or a lexically selected relation.
الفندق بعيد عن المحطة بس سهل نروحله من المطار
il-funduʾ baʿīd ʿan il-maḥaṭṭa bass sahl nirūḥlu min il-maṭār
The hotel is far from the station, but it’s easy to get to from the airport.
Here عن المحطة measures separation, while من المطار marks a journey’s source. English uses from twice and hides the Egyptian distinction.
Register and alternatives
عن is neutral across spoken and written Egyptian. Official prose may use بشأن or بخصوص “regarding” (formal), and read MSA may pronounce suffixed forms such as ʿanhu differently. In ordinary Cairene, اتكلمنا عن المشكلة is more direct than تحدثنا بشأن المشكلة in casual conversation.
Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class, age, and community varieties may show different vowels, verb choices, or plural suffixes (regional: Egypt). These are structured varieties, not defective forms; the page’s production baseline remains mainstream Cairo.

ish-shirka masʾūla ʿan iṣ-ṣiyāna laḥadd ʾākhir is-sana
The company is responsible for maintenance through the end of the year.
