Translating English Prepositions Word for Word

English for, to, about, with, and in do not map one-to-one onto Egyptian لـ، على، عن، مع، في. Mainstream Cairo says دور على “look for,” رد على “reply to,” فكر في “think about,” and زعل من “be upset with.” Some English prepositions correspond to no Egyptian preposition at all: استنى صاحبه means “wait for his friend.”

The correction strategy is lexical: retrieve the whole Egyptian frame, not an English preposition. The broader verb–preposition guide develops suffixes and relative clauses; this A2 page trains the highest-frequency transfer errors.

A practical frame list

دور على حاجةlook for something“for” does not produce لـ
استنى حدwait for someonethe person is direct
رد على حدreply to someone“to” does not produce لـ
فكر في حاجةthink about something“about” does not produce عن
زعل من حدbe upset with someone“with” does not produce مع

Store one noun and one pronoun example for each frame: رد على الرسالة / رد عليها. That teaches both the preposition and the form used when its complement becomes a suffix.

Common Mistakes

These six pairs target the most frequent word-for-word transfers from English.

1. Translating English “look for” with لـ

Everyday Cairene دور selects على for the search target.

❌ بدور للشاحن من ساعة ما رجعت.

Incorrect English-driven frame—دور takes على in mainstream Cairo.

✅ بدور على الشاحن من ساعة ما رجعت البيت.

badawwar ʿala sh-shāḥin min sāʿit ma rigiʿt il-bēt.

I've been looking for the charger since I got home.

2. Adding لـ after استنى

استنى takes the person or thing waited for as a direct object. English for has no separate counterpart here.

❌ استنيت لصاحبي قدام السينما.

Incorrect in the taught Cairo frame—the waited-for person is direct.

✅ استنيت صاحبي قدام السينما عشر دقايق.

istannēt ṣāḥbi ʾuddām is-sīnima ʿashar daʾāyiʾ.

I waited for my friend in front of the cinema for ten minutes.

3. Translating English “reply to” with لـ

The addressee or message after ردّ is introduced by على.

❌ رديت للرسالة وأنا في المترو.

Incorrect frame—ردّ selects على for the thing replied to.

✅ رديت على الرسالة وأنا راجع في المترو.

raddēt ʿala r-risāla wi-ʾana rāgiʿ fil-mitro.

I replied to the message while I was coming back on the metro.

4. Translating every English “about” with عن

فكر في is the ordinary frame for considering or thinking about a topic.

❌ بفكر عن العرض الجديد من امبارح.

Incorrect for the intended Cairo frame ‘think about/consider.’

✅ بفكر في العرض الجديد قبل ما أرد عليهم.

bafakkar fil-ʿarḍ il-gidīd ʾabl ma ʾarodd ʿalēhom.

I'm thinking about the new offer before I reply to them.

5. Translating English “upset with” with مع

The source or target of upset after زعلان is commonly introduced by من.

❌ ليلى زعلانة مع أخوها عشان اتأخر.

Incorrect for the baseline predicate frame—زعلان selects من.

✅ ليلى زعلانة من أخوها عشان اتأخر عليها.

Lēla zaʿlāna min ʾakhūha ʿashān itʾakhkhar ʿalēha.

Laila is upset with her brother because he kept her waiting.

6. Giving the person and topic the same preposition

With اتكلم, مع introduces the conversation partner and عن introduces the topic. Changing the preposition changes the role.

❌ اتكلمت لمريم مع مشكلة الإيجار.

Incorrect—neither participant role has its required frame.

✅ اتكلمت مع مريم عن مشكلة الإيجار امبارح.

itkallimt maʿ Maryam ʿan moshkilit il-ʾīgār imbāriḥ.

I spoke with Maryam about the rent problem yesterday.

A different preposition can be grammatical with a different role

Do not replace every nonmatching preposition mechanically. اتكلم مع منى means Mona participated in the conversation; اتكلم عن منى means Mona was its topic.

اتكلمت مع منى عن التدريب الجديد.

itkallimt maʿ Mona ʿan it-tadrīb il-gidīd.

I spoke with Mona about the new training.

اتكلمت عن منى مع مدير القسم.

itkallimt ʿan Mona maʿ mudīr il-ʾism.

I spoke about Mona with the department manager.

Likewise, اتفق مع شخص means agree with a person, while اتفق على خطة means agree on a plan. Both can occur together.

اتفقنا مع صاحب الشقة على ميعاد دفع الإيجار.

ittafaʾna maʿ ṣāḥib ish-shaʾʾa ʿala mīʿād dafʿ il-ʾīgār.

We agreed with the landlord on the rent payment date.

These are role contrasts, not free stylistic alternatives.

Pronouns stay with their prepositions

When the complement becomes a pronoun, attach it to the selected preposition: عليه، فيها، منها، معاه، عنها. Do not write English-like independent pronouns after the preposition.

الرسالة وصلت، بس لسه مارديتش عليها.

ir-risāla wiṣlit, bass lissa ma-raddētsh ʿalēha.

The message arrived, but I still haven't replied to it.

الموضوع مهم، وفكرنا فيه طول الطريق.

il-mawḍūʿ mohimm, wi-fakkarna fīh ṭūl iṭ-ṭarīʾ.

The issue is important, and we thought about it the whole way.

The same forms resume prepositional roles in relative clauses: الموضوع اللي فكرنا فيه “the topic we thought about.” English can strand about at the end; Egyptian normally keeps فيه inside the clause.

Register and real variation

Formal بحث عن “search for” and اتصل بـ “contact” are valid in MSA-oriented or professional discourse (formal/professional). Everyday Cairo often prefers دور على and direct كلم حد. That difference is register, not correctness. Regional, age, class, and community varieties may choose another predicate or preposition (regional/social), and code-switching can import an entire formal frame. Do not take an MSA verb but attach the colloquial frame at random; learn each predicate with its own complement.

Prepositions also keep transparent spatial meanings. حط الكتاب على الترابيزة uses surface على, not lexical government. The correction method still works: learn the whole scene and result, rather than translating English on in isolation.

Final mixed correction set

❌ سألت على ميعاد القطر في الشباك.

Incorrect for asking about information—سأل selects عن for the topic.

✅ سألت عن ميعاد القطر في شباك الاستعلامات.

saʾalt ʿan mīʿād il-ʾaṭar fi shubbāk il-istiʿlāmāt.

I asked about the train time at the information window.

❌ أخويا مهتم في تصوير الشوارع من زمان.

Incorrect predicate frame—مهتم selects بـ.

✅ أخويا مهتم بتصوير الشوارع من أيام المدرسة.

ʾakhūya mohtamm bi-taṣwīr ish-shawāriʿ min ʾayyām il-madrasa.

My brother has been interested in street photography since his school days.

❌ خفت عن الكلب لما قرب مني.

Incorrect frame—خاف takes من for the source of fear.

✅ خفت من الكلب لما قرب مني بسرعة.

khift min il-kalb lamma ʾirib minni bisorʿa.

I got scared of the dog when it came toward me quickly.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn predicate + complement frame, not a translated English preposition.
  • Some Egyptian verbs take a direct object where English uses a preposition.
  • Different prepositions can be grammatical when they introduce different roles.
  • Attach pronouns to the selected preposition and retain that preposition in relative clauses.
  • Formal and regional frames are valid when used as complete systems; label them rather than flattening them into the Cairo baseline.
