English readily leaves an empty position after a preposition: the client I spoke with, the flat we live in, the issue she asked about. Mainstream Cairene does not normally leave that preposition without a complement. It keeps the preposition in its ordinary place and adds a suffix referring back to the head noun: العميل اللي اتكلمت معاه، الشقة اللي ساكنين فيها، الموضوع اللي سألت عنه.
English translates these suffixes silently, but structurally the Egyptian phrases say “the client that I spoke with him” and “the flat that we live in it.” That repetition is not careless. It is the regular resumptive strategy.
Diagnostic 1: reconstruct the complete ordinary clause
Before building the relative, say the statement without اللي. Then replace the repeated noun with a suffix on the same preposition.
| Complete statement | Relative clause | Natural English |
|---|---|---|
| اتكلمت مع العميل | العميل اللي اتكلمت معاه | the client I spoke with |
| ساكنين في الشقة | الشقة اللي ساكنين فيها | the flat we live in |
| سألت عن الميعاد | الميعاد اللي سألت عنه | the time I asked about |
❌ الراجل اللي اتكلمت مع امبارح ساكن جنبنا.
Incorrect—مع is stranded with no complement referring to الراجل.
✅ الراجل اللي اتكلمت معاه امبارح ساكن جنبنا.
ir-rāgil illi tkallimt maʿāh imbāriḥ sākin gambina.
The man I spoke with yesterday lives next door to us.
The repair is not “add any pronoun.” It is مع + ـه → معاه, the prepositional complement that the independent sentence already requires.
Diagnostic 2: preserve the predicate's own preposition
English and Egyptian often choose different prepositions. Learn the full Egyptian frame: اشتغل في “work at/in,” دور على “look for,” وافق على “agree to,” سأل عن “ask about.” Relativization keeps that frame.
❌ الشركة اللي بشتغل في فتحت فرع جديد.
Incorrect—في needs the feminine suffix referring to الشركة.
✅ الشركة اللي بشتغل فيها فتحت فرع جديد في المعادي.
ish-shirka lli bashtaghal fīha fataḥit farʿ gidīd fil-Maʿādi.
The company I work for opened a new branch in Maadi.
❌ الملف اللي بدور على مش موجود في الدرج.
Incorrect—دور على requires عليه when the search target is masculine ملف.
✅ الملف اللي بدور عليه مش موجود في الدرج.
il-malaf illi badawwar ʿalēh mish mawgūd fid-dorg.
The file I'm looking for isn't in the drawer.
Do not translate English for into لـ first and then attach a suffix. Retrieve دور على حاجة as one frame. The verb–preposition guide gives the most frequent combinations.
Diagnostic 3: match the suffix to the antecedent
The relative marker اللي never changes, but the resumptive suffix does. Common sets include معاه / معاها / معاهم, فيه / فيها / فيهم, and عليه / عليها / عليهم.
❌ البنت اللي خرجت مع هو زميلتي في الكلية.
Incorrect—an independent pronoun cannot serve as the complement of مع here.
✅ البنت اللي خرجت معاها زميلتي في الكلية.
il-bint illi kharagt maʿāha zamīlti fil-kolliyya.
The woman I went out with is my classmate at university.
❌ الزمايل اللي سافرت معاها رجعوا بدري.
Incorrect—human plural الزمايل requires plural معاهم, not feminine singular معاها.
✅ الزمايل اللي سافرت معاهم رجعوا بدري من الرحلة.
iz-zamāyil illi sāfart maʿāhom rigʿu badri min ir-riḥla.
The colleagues I traveled with returned from the trip early.
With ordinary nonhuman plural sets, Egyptian often uses feminine-singular resumption: الكتب اللي دورت عليها “the books I looked for.” Human groups take plural ـهم in the production baseline.
Diagnostic 4: place words and لـ also need a resume
English where can hide the preposition completely. Egyptian still says “in it,” “beside it,” or “from it.” With لـ, the suffix often attaches directly to the preceding verb in everyday writing: بعتلها “I sent to her.”
❌ الكافيه اللي اتقابلنا قفل الأسبوع اللي فات.
Incorrect for ‘the café where we met’—the meeting location must be resumed with فيه.
✅ الكافيه اللي اتقابلنا فيه قفل الأسبوع اللي فات.
il-kafēh illi tʾābilna fīh ʾafal il-ʾusbūʿ illi fāt.
The café where we met closed last week.
❌ الموظفة اللي بعت الإيميل ل ردت بسرعة.
Incorrect—the recipient role after لـ needs a feminine suffix.
✅ الموظفة اللي بعتلها الإيميل ردت بسرعة.
il-mowaẓẓafa lli baʿattilha l-ʾimēl raddit bisorʿa.
The employee I sent the email to replied quickly.
The exact host matters. A direct object resumes on the verb, a prepositional complement resumes on the preposition, and a possessor resumes on its noun.
Subject relatives are the important nonexample
Do not add a resumptive pronoun when the antecedent itself is the subject of the relative verb. المدير اللي وصل means “the manager who arrived.” There is no missing prepositional complement.
المدير اللي وصل بدري فتح القاعة.
il-modīr illi wiṣil badri fataḥ il-ʾāʿa.
The manager who arrived early opened the hall.
المدير اللي هو وصل can occur with special focus or topic packaging, but it is not the neutral subject-relative template. Resumption is required by object and prepositional roles, not by the mere presence of اللي.
Definite and indefinite heads
Definite heads normally use اللي. A neutral nonspecific indefinite head commonly omits اللي, but it still keeps the resumptive suffix inside its descriptive clause.
بدور على أوضة أقدر أذاكر فيها بالليل.
badawwar ʿala ʾōḍa ʾaʾdar ʾazākir fīha bil-lēl.
I'm looking for a room where I can study at night.
The missing اللي after indefinite أوضة is grammatical; missing فيها would not be. These are two separate decisions.
Formal and regional systems
Formal MSA likewise normally completes the preposition, for example الرجل الذي تكلمت معه (formal/MSA). It uses a different relative-pronoun paradigm, but English preposition stranding is still not its model. Alexandria, the Delta, Upper Egypt, Bedouin-associated varieties, and different age or community networks may differ in suffix vowels or relative markers (regional/social). Bilingual speech may occasionally show contact-driven gaps, especially in rapid conversation, but that is not the dependable mainstream Cairo production pattern. Scripted comedy can exaggerate a gap or a formal relative for character voice (performance language).
Common Mistakes
1. Stranding عن
❌ المشكلة اللي حذرتك من حصلت فعلا.
Incorrect—من needs a feminine suffix referring to المشكلة.
✅ المشكلة اللي حذرتك منها حصلت بجد امبارح.
il-moshkila lli ḥazzartak minha ḥaṣalit bigadd imbāriḥ.
The problem I warned you about really happened yesterday.
2. Resuming on the wrong host
❌ الاقتراح اللي وافقته المدير اتنفذ.
Incorrect—وافق selects على; the proposal must be resumed as عليه, not as a direct object.
✅ الاقتراح اللي وافق عليه المدير اتنفذ بسرعة.
il-iʾtirāḥ illi wāfaʾ ʿalēh il-modīr itnaffaz bisorʿa.
The proposal the manager approved was implemented quickly.
3. Forgetting resumption after a long clause
❌ البيت اللي كنا ساكنين قبل الجواز اتباع.
Incorrect—the distance from البيت does not remove required فيه.
✅ البيت اللي كنا ساكنين فيه قبل الجواز اتباع.
il-bēt illi konna sāknīn fīh ʾabl il-gawāz itbāʿ.
The house we lived in before getting married was sold.
Final mixed correction set
❌ الكرسي اللي حطيت الشنطة على مكسور.
Incorrect—على is stranded after the object الشنطة.
✅ الكرسي اللي حطيت الشنطة عليه مكسور.
il-korsi lli ḥaṭṭēt ish-shanṭa ʿalēh maksūr.
The chair I put the bag on is broken.
❌ الطريق اللي جينا من كان زحمة.
Incorrect—من needs a masculine resumptive suffix.
✅ الطريق اللي جينا منه كان زحمة طول الصبح.
iṭ-ṭarīʾ illi gēna minno kān zaḥma ṭūl iṣ-ṣobḥ.
The road we came by was congested all morning.
Key Takeaways
- Rebuild the complete Egyptian predicate before forming the relative.
- Keep its selected preposition and attach ـه، ـها، ـهم as appropriate.
- English where does not license an empty location in Egyptian.
- Subject relatives have a genuine subject gap; prepositional relatives normally use resumption.
- Omitting اللي after a nonspecific indefinite does not license omitting the resumptive suffix.
