English uses a plural noun after every number above one: two books, three books, eleven books, twenty books. Mainstream Cairene divides the number line differently. Two uses a dual noun; 3–10 use a plural noun; 11 and above normally return to a singular counted noun: كتابين، تلات كتب، حداشر كتاب، عشرين كتاب.
This is grammar, not arithmetic. حداشر كتاب refers to eleven books even though كتاب is morphologically singular. To correct an error, identify the numeral range before choosing the noun form.
The four-range diagnostic
| Quantity | Neutral Cairene pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | singular noun + واحد/واحدة | كتاب واحد، عربية واحدة |
| 2 | dual noun; اتنين may follow for emphasis | كتابين، عربيتين اتنين |
| 3–10 | short numeral + plural noun | تلات كتب، خمس عربيات |
| 11–99 and round hundreds/thousands | numeral + singular counted noun | حداشر كتاب، خمسة وعشرين عربية، مية جنيه |
The pattern selects a noun form. It does not merely ask whether the real-world group contains more than one item.
One follows the singular noun
For an exact count of one, the noun is singular and واحد / واحدة normally follows it. The number agrees with the noun's gender.
❌ واحد تذكرة كفاية للرحلة.
Incorrect neutral order and gender—تذكرة is feminine, and ‘one’ normally follows it as واحدة.
✅ تذكرة واحدة كفاية للرحلة دي.
tazkara waḥda kifāya lir-riḥla di.
One ticket is enough for this trip.
معايا مفتاح واحد للباب الخارجي.
maʿāya miftāḥ wāḥid lil-bāb il-khārgi.
I have one key for the outside door.
Fronted واحد can mean “one person” or “a certain person” in other constructions. The correction here concerns ordinary counting with an overt noun.
Two is built into the noun
Egyptian has productive dual forms, often ـين in ordinary speech. The dual noun itself means “two”; following اتنين can clarify or emphasize the count. Do not put bare اتنين before a singular noun by copying English.
❌ اشتريت اتنين كتاب من المعرض.
Incorrect ordinary count phrase—the noun needs its dual form كتابين.
✅ اشتريت كتابين من المعرض عشان المشروع.
ishtarēt kitābēn min il-maʿraḍ ʿashān il-mashrūʿ.
I bought two books at the fair for the project.
حجزنا أوضتين اتنين جنب بعض.
ḥagazna ʾōḍtēn itnēn gamb baʿḍ.
We booked two rooms next to each other.
The adjective follows the dual noun and agrees with it. The form اتنين after أوضتين reinforces the exact count; it does not replace the dual morphology.
Three through ten require the plural noun
Everyday Cairo uses a short numeral before a plural counted noun. The short form is largely the same with masculine and feminine nouns: تلات كتب، تلات عربيات. Do not import formal MSA gender polarity into the casual baseline.
❌ عندنا تلات موظف جديد في الفرع.
Incorrect—an ordinary noun after 3–10 must be plural.
✅ عندنا تلات موظفين جداد في الفرع الجديد.
ʿandina talat mowaẓẓafīn godād fil-farʿ il-gidīd.
We have three new employees at the new branch.
❌ استنيت خمس دقيقة قدام العيادة.
Incorrect—خمس selects plural دقايق in an ordinary duration.
✅ استنيت خمس دقايق قدام العيادة وبعدين مشيت.
istannēt khamas daʾāyiʾ ʾoddām il-ʿiyāda wi-baʿdēn mishēt.
I waited five minutes outside the clinic and then left.
The hard part is often lexical plural formation: كتاب/كتب، دقيقة/دقايق، شهر/شهور، مشكلة/مشاكل. Learn the plural with the noun; adding a numeral cannot generate it mechanically. The full 3–10 guide covers short numeral forms and unit exceptions.
Eleven and above return to the singular noun
From eleven onward, the ordinary counted noun is singular, even though English translates it as plural. The same basic pattern continues through teens, decades, and compound numbers.
❌ وصل حداشر ضيوف قبل الغدا.
Incorrect in the taught Cairene count phrase—حداشر selects singular ضيف.
✅ وصل حداشر ضيف قبل الغدا بنص ساعة.
wiṣil ḥidāshar ḍēf ʾabl il-ghada binoṣṣ sāʿa.
Eleven guests arrived half an hour before lunch.
❌ الشركة باعت خمسة وعشرين عربيات الشهر ده.
Incorrect—compound numbers above ten normally select a singular counted noun.
✅ الشركة باعت خمسة وعشرين عربية الشهر ده.
ish-shirka bāʿit khamsa wi-ʿishrīn ʿarabiyya sh-shahr da.
The company sold twenty-five cars this month.
The adjective describing that counted noun is commonly singular too: اتناشر عربية جديدة “twelve new cars.” Elsewhere in the clause, a human group can still trigger plural agreement because it refers to multiple people.
Hundreds and thousands keep the counted noun singular
Round quantities normally continue the singular pattern: مية جنيه، ميتين جنيه، تلتمية طالب، ألف رسالة. English plural marking is again a poor guide.
❌ دفعت مية جنيهات عربون.
Incorrect in the ordinary money expression—مية selects singular جنيه.
✅ دفعت مية جنيه عربون والباقي عند الاستلام.
dafaʿt miyya ginēh ʿarbūn wil-bāʾi ʿand il-istilām.
I paid a hundred pounds as a deposit and the rest on delivery.
Some complex large-number constructions require their own grouping rules. At A2, the dependable correction is to keep the unit noun singular after the complete number phrase.
Real unit-label exceptions
Currencies, measures, menu orders, and clock readings can use conventional counter-like patterns. تلاتة جنيه “three pounds” and أربعة كيلو “four kilos” contain a long numeral plus a singular unit label; الساعة عشرة gives a clock time, not ten counted hours. These are genuine lexical constructions, not permission to say singular كتاب after three.
هات تلاتة كيلو بطاطس وكيلو طماطم.
hāt talāta kīlo baṭāṭis wi-kīlo ṭamāṭim.
Bring three kilos of potatoes and one kilo of tomatoes.
Compare ordinary duration تلات ساعات “three hours” with clock label الساعة تلاتة “at three o'clock.” Memorize frequent units as whole expressions.
Formal and regional alternatives
Formal MSA has gender polarity with 3–10, formal dual case distinctions, and case marking on counted nouns (formal/MSA). Those forms are legitimate in a formal announcement or quotation, but they do not improve casual Cairo speech. Alexandria, the Delta, Upper Egypt, Bedouin-associated communities, and different age or professional groups can preserve different numeral shapes or unit collocations (regional/social/professional). This page teaches the mainstream Cairo production baseline rather than calling other internally consistent systems errors.
Common Mistakes
1. Using the dual after three
❌ حجزت تلات تذكرتين للحفلة.
Incorrect—تذكرتين means exactly two; تلات requires plural تذاكر.
✅ حجزت تلات تذاكر للحفلة يوم الخميس.
ḥagazt talat tazākir lil-ḥafla yōm il-khamīs.
I booked three tickets for Thursday's concert.
2. Keeping the plural after a teen
❌ الاجتماع خد تلتاشر دقايق زيادة.
Incorrect—تلتاشر selects singular دقيقة.
✅ الاجتماع خد تلتاشر دقيقة زيادة عن المتوقع.
il-igtimāʿ khad tiltāshar daʾīʾa ziyāda ʿan il-motawaʾʾaʿ.
The meeting took thirteen minutes longer than expected.
3. Putting the noun before a 3–10 numeral
❌ جبت ملفات ست من المخزن.
Incorrect as a neutral exact count—the short numeral precedes the plural noun.
✅ جبت ست ملفات من المخزن للمراجعة.
gibt sitt malaffāt min il-makhzan lil-morāgaʿa.
I brought six files from storage for review.
Final mixed correction set
❌ عندي اتنين مشكلة وسبعتاشر إيميلات.
Incorrect twice—two requires dual مشكلتين, while seventeen requires singular إيميل.
✅ عندي مشكلتين وسبعتاشر إيميل لازم أرد عليهم.
ʿandi moshkiltēn wi-sabʿatāshar ʾimēl lāzim ʾarodd ʿalēhom.
I have two problems and seventeen emails that I have to answer.
❌ طلبنا تمن كرسي وعشرين ترابيزات.
Incorrect in both ranges—eight needs plural كراسي, while twenty needs singular ترابيزة.
✅ طلبنا تمن كراسي وعشرين ترابيزة للمكتب.
ṭalabna taman karāsi wi-ʿishrīn tarābēza lil-maktab.
We ordered eight chairs and twenty tables for the office.
