B2 is the level at which you organize an argument for a listener rather than merely connect clauses. You should control cause, concession, condition, topic and focus, long-distance reference, advanced clitics, and style shifts across interviews, subtitles, and professional interaction. The goal is flexible mainstream Cairene production plus broad, labeled recognition—not a blend in which every variety loses its boundaries.
Prerequisite gate
Complete the B1 path exit checks. Record a three-minute narrative and audit bare imperfect, كان, participles, relative resumption, clitic reference, and evaluation. If those forms collapse under time pressure, repair them before adding B2 clause depth.
kont mitwaʾʾiʿ inn il-khoṭṭa tingaḥ, bass lamma ẓ-ẓorūf itghayyarit iḍṭarrēna nirāgiʿha.
I expected the plan to succeed, but when circumstances changed, we had to review it.
You are ready when you can explain the content clause after إن, the bare verb after اضطرينا, the event boundary with لما, and object ـها.
Module 1: design complex clause relations
Study purpose, cause, result, concession, and real conditions. For each relation, contrast two linkers and ask what the speaker treats as background, new claim, or unexpected result.
maʿ inn it-taʾrīr itbaʿat badri, mawiṣilsh lil-modīr ʿashān il-ʿunwān kān ghalaṭ.
Although the report was sent early, it didn't reach the manager because the address was wrong.
Milestone: give one recommendation supported by a cause, a concession, a consequence, and a condition. Do not stack linkers merely to sound advanced; each must change the relation the listener infers.
Module 2: package old and new information
Sequence topic–comment, left dislocation, right dislocation, and predicate fronting. Compare a neutral clause with a marked order in a real discourse context.
il-iʾtirāḥ illi ʾaddimitu Mona, ʾana shāyif innu miḥtāg taʿdīl.
As for the proposal Mona submitted, I think it needs revision.
Initial الاقتراح... establishes the topic; ـه in قدمته and إنه maintain reference. English speakers often front a phrase but omit the resumptive morphology Egyptian requires.
mofīd giddan kān il-igtimāʿ, bass ṭawīl aktar min il-lāzim.
Very useful, the meeting was—but longer than necessary. (marked evaluative fronting)
Produce marked orders only when you can state their discourse purpose: contrast, correction, evaluation, or topic continuity.
Module 3: advanced clitic chains and reference
Study two-object clitics, clitic climbing, resumptive pronouns, and negation order. Diagram host, object, recipient, and negative ـش before practicing speed.
il-malaf da baʿatt-hū-laha imbāriḥ, bass heyya lissa mafataḥtūsh.
I sent her this file yesterday, but she still hasn't opened it.
kān lāzim ʾaddīhūlak binafsi ʿashān matinsahūsh.
I had to give it to you myself so you wouldn't forget it.
Milestone: maintain two referents across five turns without replacing every clitic with a full noun or creating ambiguity.
Module 4: source, stance, and pragmatic force
Read information source, hedging, agreement and disagreement, and presupposition. Separate the proposition from how strongly the speaker commits to it.
ʿala ḥasab kalāmu, l-igtimāʿ itʾaggal, bass ana lissa matʾakkidtish.
According to him, the meeting was postponed, but I haven't confirmed it yet.
This is a B2 information-quality habit: attribute the report, state the claim, and mark your own evidence status.
Module 5: media listening as comparison
Work through interviews, subtitles, performance language, and news register. Use a three-column transcript: exact audio, displayed subtitle, and your natural English translation.
fi ṣ-ṣōt karrar is-suʾāl marratēn, innama t-targama ikhtaṣaritu fi saṭr wāḥid.
In the audio he repeated the question twice, whereas the subtitles compressed it into one line.
Production goal: summarize content in clear Cairene. Recognition goal: identify subtitle formalization, a performance pause, an MSA headline, or a marked regional feature without treating it as neutral production.
Module 6: controlled style shifting
Compare educated speech, professional settings, and code-switching. Practice the same message to a friend, colleague, and public audience. Change address, vocabulary, explicitness, and formulae while keeping each version internally coherent.
liṣ-ṣāḥib: ibʿatli t-tafāṣīl lamma tifḍa; wi-liz-zimīl: ibʿatli t-tafāṣīl lamma yikūn ʿandak waʾt.
To a friend: send me the details when you're free; to a colleague: send me the details when you have time.
The second is not MSA; it is a more explicit professional Egyptian choice. Style shifting is not synonymous with switching languages.
Review loops and B2 capstone
Every week, select a two-minute interview clip. Transcribe thirty seconds, summarize it orally, rewrite the summary for a professional message, and list recognition-only features. Then revisit one clitic chain and one information-structure decision from your output.
The capstone is a five-minute response to a local issue. Present the issue, attribute two viewpoints, give cause and concession, propose a condition-dependent solution, answer an objection, and close with a calibrated recommendation. Submit an unvocalized written version plus an annotated audio transcript.
law waffarna khidma badīla, niʾdar niʾfil il-makān ʾusbūʿ min ghēr ma niʿaṭṭal in-nās.
If we provide an alternative service, we can close the place for a week without disrupting people.
Common Mistakes
1. Stacking connectors without logical relations
Incorrect connector stack — concession, cause, and condition have no coherent scope.
maʿ inn il-moshkila nādra, lāzim nigahhiz ḥall law ḥaṣalit.
Although the problem is rare, we need to prepare a solution in case it occurs.
2. Fronting without resumption or purpose
Incomplete topic relation — the comment does not mark what role the presentation has.
il-ʿarḍ da, l-lagna rāgaʿitu imbāriḥ wi-ṭalabit taʿdīlēn.
As for this presentation, the committee reviewed it yesterday and requested two changes.
3. Separating advanced clitics
Incorrect segmentation — object, recipient, and negative suffixes join their hosts.
baʿatt-hū-lhum iṣ-ṣobḥ, bass lissa maʾarūhūsh.
I sent it to them this morning, but they still haven't read it.
4. Copying subtitle register into every conversation
Register error — a pan-Arab formal subtitle is not automatically neutral friend-to-friend speech.
ḥaʾūl liṣāḥbi ʿashān kida lāzim, wi-ʾafham iṣ-ṣīgha r-rasmiyya lamma ʾashūfha.
I'll use ʿashān kida lāzim with my friend and understand the formal form when I see it.
