Attribution and Evidential Distance

When Egyptian speakers report information, they can identify a source, describe access to evidence, or distance themselves from a claim. أنا شفت بنفسي marks direct visual access; منى قالت إن... names a speaker; على حسب كلام منى... frames the claim as Mona’s account; بيقولوا إن... presents circulating hearsay; and شكله... marks inference rather than report.

These choices affect more than certainty. They distribute responsibility, protect relationships, and show whether the listener should treat a proposition as witnessed, attributed, rumored, documented, or inferred. No one formula is obligatory for every speaker, but leaving the source unmarked can sound too categorical when the information is sensitive or secondhand.

Diagnostic 1: distinguish access from attribution

Direct-evidence expressions say how the current speaker knows. Attribution says who supplied the proposition. The two can co-occur, but they answer different questions.

أنا شفت بنفسي إن باب المخزن كان مفتوح

ʾana shoft binafsi ʾinn bāb il-makhzan kān maftūḥ

I saw for myself that the storeroom door was open. (direct visual evidence)

الحارس قاللي إن باب المخزن كان مفتوح

il-ḥāris ʾālli ʾinn bāb il-makhzan kān maftūḥ

The guard told me that the storeroom door was open. (named source)

The first commits the speaker to having perceived the state. The second commits the speaker only to the guard having said it; the embedded proposition may still need verification. A natural English translation can make both sound like plain reports, so keep the evidence relation explicit in Egyptian analysis.

💡
Ask two separate questions: “Who supplied the claim?” and “What access did the current speaker have?” Attribution and evidence are related, but they are not the same grammatical job.

Diagnostic 2: choose a named-source frame by responsibility

فلان قال إن... reports speech directly. على حسب كلام فلان... means “according to what so-and-so said” and keeps responsibility for the information visibly with that source. على كلام فلان is also common in conversation; حسب كلام can sound slightly more careful or professional.

ريم قالت إن الاجتماع اتنقل للدور التالت

Rīm ʾālit ʾinn il-igtimāʿ itnaʾal lid-dor it-tālit

Reem said the meeting was moved to the third floor.

على حسب كلام ريم، الاجتماع اتنقل للدور التالت

ʿala ḥasab kalām Rīm, il-igtimāʿ itnaʾal lid-dor it-tālit

According to Reem, the meeting was moved to the third floor. (claim explicitly framed as her account)

The second frame is useful when the claim is not yet independently confirmed or when accuracy matters. It need not imply distrust; it can be responsible source tracking.

Diagnostic 3: unspecified sources create evidential distance

Third-person plural بيقولوا إن... literally means “they say that...” but often functions as a reportative with no specific هما. It signals circulating information while leaving the source vague. سمعت إن... identifies the speaker’s access as hearsay but likewise may omit who said it.

بيقولوا إن الخط الجديد حيفتح الشهر الجاي

biyiʾūlu ʾinn il-khaṭṭ il-gidīd ḥayiftaḥ ish-shahr il-gayy

They say the new line will open next month. (circulating report; source unspecified)

سمعت إن الشركة حتغير نظام الإجازات

simiʿt ʾinn ish-shirka ḥatghayyar niẓām il-ʾigāzāt

I heard the company is going to change the leave system. (hearsay, not a claim of direct knowledge)

Unspecified بيقولوا creates more distance than naming a source, but it can also weaken accountability. For consequential news, a listener can legitimately ask مين قال؟ “who said?” or مصدر الكلام ده إيه؟ “what is the source of that?”

Diagnostic 4: documentary sources differ by register

حسب الرسالة / حسب التقرير and وفقا للتقرير attribute a claim to a text. حسب fits educated conversation and professional speech; وفقا لـ is more formal and MSA-oriented.

حسب رسالة الشركة، الطلب اتشحن امبارح

ḥasab risālit ish-shirka, iṭ-ṭalab itshaḥan imbāriḥ

According to the company’s message, the order shipped yesterday. (professional/neutral)

وفقا للتقرير، نسبة الاستخدام زادت

wifʾan lit-taʾrīr, nisbit il-istikhdām zādit

According to the report, usage increased. (formal MSA-oriented frame with Egyptian clause)

The formal version is not more truthful; it simply fits reports, presentations, and institutional language. An informal conversation may prefer التقرير بيقول إن... “the report says that....”

Diagnostic 5: separate report from inference

شكله / شكلها profiles clues or appearances. واضح إن presents a conclusion as evident. Neither expression means that another person said the claim. The distinction is developed further under evidence and inference.

واضح إن الاجتماع خلص بدري؛ القاعة فاضية

wāḍiḥ ʾinn il-igtimāʿ khalaṣ badri; il-ʾāʿa fāḍya

It’s clear that the meeting ended early; the room is empty. (inference from evidence)

سمعت إن الاجتماع خلص بدري من موظف الاستقبال

simiʿt ʾinn il-igtimāʿ khalaṣ badri min mowaẓẓaf il-istiʾbāl

I heard from the receptionist that the meeting ended early. (reported source)

The same conclusion can therefore have different evidential paths. English apparently often hides whether the basis is appearance or report; Egyptian makes a more useful distinction.

Commitment is not a single scale

Attribution can distance the speaker from truth responsibility, but context decides how much. Naming a trusted eyewitness may strengthen a claim. على حد علمي “as far as I know” limits the speaker’s knowledge boundary, while حسب ما فهمت “as I understood it” marks an interpretation that remains open to correction.

على حد علمي، مفيش رسوم إضافية

ʿala ḥadd ʿilmi, mafīsh rosūm ʾiḍāfiyya

As far as I know, there are no additional fees. (limited knowledge claim)

حسب ما فهمت، النسخة دي للمراجعة مش للنشر

ḥasab ma fihimt, in-noskha di lil-morāgʿa mish lin-nashr

As I understand it, this version is for review, not publication. (interpretation offered for confirmation)

Neither formula is a magic politeness shield. A firm, accusatory contour can still sound confrontational; a calm contour and an invitation to correct complete the stance.

Informal and respectful attribution

Relationship and status affect wording. Friends may use a compact source phrase. With a client, supervisor, or older unfamiliar person, a speaker can name the source and frame possible misunderstanding as their own.

على كلام سامح، الحجز اتأكد

ʿala kalām Sāmiḥ, il-ḥagz itʾakkad

According to Sameh, the booking is confirmed. (informal/neutral)

حسب ما حضرتك وضحت، التسليم يوم الخميس، صح؟

ḥasab ma ḥaḍritak waḍḍaḥt, it-taslīm yom il-khamīs, ṣaḥḥ?

As you explained, delivery is Thursday, correct? (respectful confirmation, to a man)

حضرتك indexes respect, while حسب ما... صح؟ attributes and invites confirmation. A title alone cannot repair a blunt accusation.

A complete adjacency pair

هو المعاد اتغير ولا لسه؟

huwwa l-miʿād itghayyar walla lissa?

Has the appointment changed or not?

على حسب رسالة العيادة، اتنقل للساعة خمسة

ʿala ḥasab risālit il-ʿiyāda, itnaʾal lis-sāʿa khamsa

According to the clinic’s message, it was moved to five.

تمام، ابعتهالي عشان أتأكد من العنوان كمان

tamām, ibʿathāli ʿashān ʾatʾakkad min il-ʿonwān kamān

Okay—send it to me so I can check the address too. (to a man)

The answer repeats the source instead of merely saying “yes.” That repetition is useful, not redundant: it tells the listener how firm the update is and where to verify it.

💡
In consequential exchanges, a source-bearing response is often more cooperative than a bare yes. It gives the listener both the update and a path for checking it.

Repairing attribution that sounded too blunt

إنت قلت معلومات غلط للعميل

ʾinta ʾolt maʿlūmāt ghalaṭ lil-ʿamīl

You gave the client wrong information. (direct accusation, to a man)

أنا قلتله نفس اللي كان مكتوب في الرسالة

ʾana ʾoltilo nafs illi kān maktūb fi r-risāla

I told him exactly what was written in the message.

ممكن أنا فهمت المصدر غلط؛ خلينا نراجع الرسالة سوا قبل ما نحدد المسؤولية

momkin ʾana fihimt il-maṣdar ghalaṭ; khallīna nirāgiʿ ir-risāla sawa ʾabl ma niḥaddid il-masʾūliyya

Maybe I misunderstood the source; let’s review the message together before assigning responsibility.

The repair shifts from personal blame to jointly checking the documentary source. It does not pretend the discrepancy is unimportant.

Register and variation

قال إن، سمعت إن، على كلام، بيقولوا إن are everyday Cairene (informal/neutral). حسب التقرير spans professional conversation and writing (professional). وفقا لـ، بحسب ما ورد belong to MSA-oriented institutional discourse (formal). Code-switching may signal genre or authority, but formal wording cannot compensate for a weak or unnamed source.

Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties differ in reporting verbs, source formulas, and how readily an unnamed plural is accepted (regional/social). News presenters and storytellers may adopt a special reportative voice (performance language). The mainstream Cairo baseline remains: identify access or source when it matters, and match the distance to the relationship and consequences.

Common Mistakes

Translating English “apparently” with one fixed form

❌ شكله المدير قال إن الاجتماع اتلغى

Confused evidential structure for the intended report—شكله marks inference, while the claim actually comes from the manager’s words.

✅ المدير قال إن الاجتماع اتلغى

il-modīr ʾāl ʾinn il-igtimāʿ itilgha

The manager said the meeting was canceled.

Presenting hearsay as direct knowledge

❌ الشركة حتفصل ناس الشهر الجاي

Too categorical when the speaker only heard an unconfirmed rumor.

✅ سمعت إن الشركة ممكن تقلل عدد الموظفين، بس الخبر مش مؤكد

simiʿt ʾinn ish-shirka momkin tiʾallil ʿadad il-mowaẓẓafīn, bass il-khabar mish moʾakkad

I heard that the company may reduce staff, but the report isn’t confirmed.

Giving no source in a consequential answer

❌ أيوه، اتغير

Insufficient for the intended high-stakes update—the listener cannot evaluate or verify the change.

✅ أيوه، حسب الإيميل الرسمي اتغير من الاتنين للتلات

ʾaywa, ḥasab il-ʾimīl ir-rasmi itghayyar min il-itnen lit-talāt

Yes—according to the official email, it changed from Monday to Tuesday.

Treating respectful attribution as empty repetition

❌ حضرتك قلت الخميس

Too blunt in a disagreement with a senior addressee; it can sound like direct blame.

✅ يمكن أنا فهمت غلط، بس حسب ما حضرتك قلت كان المعاد الخميس

yimkin ʾana fihimt ghalaṭ, bass ḥasab ma ḥaḍritak ʾolt kān il-miʿād il-khamīs

Perhaps I misunderstood, but as I understood what you said, the appointment was Thursday. (respectful, to a man)

Key Takeaways

  • Mark direct access, named attribution, documentary source, hearsay, and inference as distinct relations.
  • قال إن reports a speaker; على حسب كلام keeps responsibility visibly with that source.
  • بيقولوا إن and سمعت إن create distance but may require follow-up source checking.
  • على حد علمي limits knowledge; حسب ما فهمت offers an interpretation for correction.
  • Formula, prosody, status, relationship, and response sequence jointly determine appropriateness.
