Clitics inside ما...ش

In joined Egyptian verbal negation, final ـش is the outermost suffix. Subject marking belongs to the verb, then object and recipient clitics attach, and only then does ـش close the negative word. The production template is ما + verbal host + direct object + recipient + ش.

English encourages the wrong analysis because didn't appears before a separate object pronoun: I didn't tell him. Egyptian builds one morphological word: ماقلتلوش ma-ʾoltillūsh. The object cannot be moved after ـش, and ش cannot be written as a separate English-like word.

Rule 1: negate the complete inflected host

First choose and inflect the positive verb. Then add any clitics. Negation wraps the resulting word.

LayerFormMeaning
inflected perfectكتبتI wrote
  • direct object
كتبتهاI wrote it (f.)
  • negative envelope
ماكتبتهاشI did not write it

كتبت الملاحظات على النسخة المطبوعة.

katabt il-molāḥaẓāt ʿala n-noskha l-maṭbūʿa.

I wrote the notes on the printed copy.

ماكتبتهاش على النسخة الأصلية.

ma-katabthāsh ʿala n-noskha l-ʾaṣliyya.

I didn't write them on the original copy.

The initial ماـ and final ـش are discontinuous in pronunciation but one orthographic envelope in the house style. The feminine object ـها is closer to the verb than the negative ending.

سلموا المفاتيح للحارس بالليل.

sallimu l-mafātīḥ lil-ḥāris bil-lēl.

They handed the keys to the guard at night.

ماسلموهاش للحارس عشان المكتب كان مفتوح.

ma-sallimūhāsh lil-ḥāris ʿashān il-maktab kān maftūḥ.

They didn't hand them to the guard because the office was open.

Plural subject ـوا, object ـها, and negative ـش all remain audible in the order سلموا + ها + ش.

Rule 2: the direct object precedes a recipient clitic

When a verb carries both “it” and “to him/her/me,” the direct object comes first and the recipient comes second. Final ـش follows the entire cluster.

Internal analysisWritten wordNatural meaning
ما + قلت + ه + له + شماقلتهولوشI did not tell it to him
ما + بعت + ها + لك + شمابعتهالكشI did not send it to you
ما + وري + ت + ها + لهم + شماوريتهالهمشI did not show it to them

The spelling represents conventional Egyptian clitic sequences, not a row of independently movable pronouns. Exact vowels and stem shapes must be learned with frequent combinations.

بعت الصورة لسلمى بعد الاجتماع.

baʿatt iṣ-ṣūra li-Salma baʿd il-igtimāʿ.

I sent the picture to Salma after the meeting.

مابعتهالهاش عشان الاسم كان ظاهر فيها.

ma-baʿatthālahāsh ʿashān il-ism kān ẓāhir fīha.

I didn't send it to her because the name was visible in it.

المدير ماقالهومش القرار قبل ما يعلنه.

il-modīr ma-ʾalhūmsh il-ʾarār ʾabl ma yiʿlino.

The manager didn't tell them the decision before announcing it.

In ماقالهومش, the human plural object ـهم comes before ـش. In مابعتهالهاش, “it” and “to her” both remain inside. See two-object clitics for the positive inventory.

💡
Final ـش is a closing bracket. If any object or recipient still has to attach, the bracket is not ready to close.

Rule 3: attachment can change vowels without changing the order

Clitics create new syllable shapes. Egyptian may insert a short vowel, shorten a long vowel before a consonant-initial suffix, or select a clitic-conditioned stem. Those are phonological and lexical adjustments; the morphological order stays the same.

هو شاف النسخة النهائية امبارح.

huwwa shāf in-noskha n-nihāʾiyya imbāriḥ.

He saw the final version yesterday.

هو ماشافهاش بعد التعديلات الأخيرة.

huwwa ma-shafhāsh baʿd it-taʿdīlāt il-ʾakhīra.

He didn't see it after the latest changes.

The vowel of shāf is shorter before the consonant-initial object suffix in connected Cairo speech: shāf → shaf-ha. The script still keeps ا, so target and spoken form share the same letters. Romanization records the spoken length.

أنا ماقلتش لحد إنك مسافر.

ʾana ma-ʾoltish li-ḥadd innak mosāfir.

I didn't tell anyone that you're traveling.

أنا ماقلتهالوش عشان المعلومة لسه سرية.

ʾana ma-ʾoltahālūsh ʿashān il-maʿlūma lissa sirriyya.

I didn't tell it to him because the information is still confidential.

Do not manufacture complex clusters by spelling English pronouns separately. Learn high-frequency combinations as whole spoken forms and analyze them afterward.

Rule 4: b-imperfect prefixes stay inside too

With a b-imperfect event, ماـ precedes the aspect/person stack; objects still precede ـش.

المحاسبة بتبعتلنا كشف كل أسبوع.

il-moḥāsiba bitibʿatlina kashf koll ʾosbūʿ.

The accountant sends us a statement every week.

المحاسبة مابتبعتهولناش غير آخر الشهر.

il-moḥāsiba ma-bitbaʿathūlnāsh ghēr ʾākhir ish-shahr.

The accountant doesn't send it to us until the end of the month.

The internal order is ما + بـ + تـ + بعت + ه + لنا + ش. Neither the b-imperfect marker nor the clitics move outside the envelope.

Rule 5: مش and مفيش do not use this verbal template

Independent مش precedes a predicate or focused constituent; it does not wrap an adjective in ما...ش. مفيش is a lexicalized existential negative.

النسخة دي مش كاملة؛ ناقصها صفحتين.

in-noskha di mish kāmla; nāʾiṣha ṣafḥitēn.

This copy isn't complete; it's missing two pages.

مفيش حد بعتلنا النسخة الصح.

mafīsh ḥadd baʿatlina n-noskha ṣ-ṣaḥḥ.

Nobody sent us the right copy.

The first denies a property; the second denies the existence of any sender. Clitic ordering applies inside بعتلنا, but existential مفيش remains its own word.

A corrective dialogue

إنت بعت التقرير لهاني؟

ʾinta baʿatt it-taʾrīr li-Hāni?

Did you send the report to Hany?

لأ، مابعتهولوش؛ بعته لسارة تراجعه الأول.

laʾ, ma-baʿatthūlūsh; baʿatto li-Sāra tirāgʿo l-ʾawwil.

No, I didn't send it to him; I sent it to Sara to review first.

تمام، يبقى هاني لسه ماشافوش.

tamām, yibʾa Hāni lissa ma-shafūsh.

Okay, then Hany still hasn't seen it.

The correction preserves the same direct object while changing its recipient. That is exactly the contrast encoded inside مابعتهولوش.

Register and variation

The joined template is mainstream urban Cairene (informal/neutral). Formal MSA uses separate negative particles and different object-pronoun syntax (formal). Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, age, class, and community varieties can differ in clitic vowels, long-vowel shortening, and how consistently final ـش appears (regional/social). Those surface differences do not justify moving an object after ـش in the Cairo baseline.

Rapid speech may compress vowels; careful speech may make them clearer. Songs and comic performance can stretch a vowel for meter or stance (performance). Spell the grammatical clitics, not every expressive duration.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the object after final ـش.

❌ ماكتبتش ها في التقرير.

Incorrect — ـها must attach before the closing negative marker.

✅ ماكتبتهاش في التقرير عشان المعلومة مش مؤكدة.

ma-katabthāsh fi t-taʾrīr ʿashān il-maʿlūma mish muʾakkada.

I didn't write it in the report because the information isn't confirmed.

2. Separating ش as though it were English not.

❌ مابعتلك ش العنوان.

Incorrect spelling — the recipient and ـش form one word with the verb.

✅ مابعتلكش العنوان الجديد عشان ماكنتش متأكد.

ma-baʿatlaksh il-ʿonwān il-gidīd ʿashān ma-kontish mitʾakkid.

I didn't send you the new address because I wasn't sure.

3. Closing negation before the recipient.

❌ مابعتهوش لها امبارح.

Incorrect for one clitic word meaning ‘I didn't send it to her’ — the recipient belongs before ـش.

✅ مابعتهالهاش امبارح بسبب مشكلة في الإيميل.

ma-baʿatthālahāsh imbāriḥ bisabab moshkila fi l-ʾēmēl.

I didn't send it to her yesterday because of an email problem.

4. Using verbal circumfixes around an adjective.

❌ النسخة ماكاملةش.

Incorrect in neutral Cairo — كاملة is a predicate and takes independent مش.

✅ النسخة مش كاملة من غير الملحق.

in-noskha mish kāmla min ghēr il-molḥaʾ.

The copy isn't complete without the appendix.

5. Importing formal لم into the Cairo clitic template.

❌ لم بعتهولوش.

Incorrect mixture — formal لم and Cairene circumfixal morphology do not form one construction.

✅ مابعتهولوش قبل ما يراجع الأرقام.

ma-baʿatthūlūsh ʾabl ma yirāgiʿ il-ʾarʾām.

I didn't send it to him before he checked the figures.

Key Takeaways

  • Build the positive inflected host and its clitics first; wrap the complete word in ما...ش.
  • Direct objects precede recipient clitics, and ـش comes last.
  • Vowel insertion or shortening can change pronunciation, but not clitic order.
  • b-imperfect and person markers remain inside the negative envelope.
  • مش and مفيش are different negative strategies, not hosts for this clitic template.
