Result Clauses with عشان كده، يبقى، and فـ

A result clause tells the listener what follows from a cause, observation, or premise. Cairene عشان كده makes the consequence explicit as “that’s why,” discourse-marker يبقى draws a conclusion or next practical step, and attached فـ presents the second clause as a direct outcome or response. English so covers all three and several unrelated uses, so translating one word mechanically produces unnatural Egyptian.

Result normally moves from basis to outcome. Each clause still chooses its own subject, aspect, and negation; the connector contributes the relation between them.

Rule 1: عشان كده explicitly resumes the cause

عشان كده refers back to a preceding fact or stretch of discourse and introduces its consequence. It can follow an Arabic comma, semicolon, or sentence boundary.

iṭ-ṭarīʾ ir-raʾīsi kān maʾfūl, ʿashān kida khadna shāriʿ gānbi

The main road was closed, so we took a side street.

il-ʾasʿār zādit; ʿashān kida binrāgiʿ il-mīzāniyya koll ʾusbūʿ

Prices have risen; that’s why we review the budget every week.

Maha bitisāfir kitīr, wi-ʿashān kida shanṭitha gāhza ʿala ṭūl

Maha travels a lot, and that’s why her bag is always ready.

The result may be a completed event, a habit, or a nonverbal state. عشان كده itself does not assign tense.

💡
Use عشان كده when the cause has already been stated and you want to point back to it explicitly. It is a discourse bridge, not a substitute for causal عشان before the reason.

Rule 2: يبقى draws an inference or practical conclusion

As a discourse marker, يبقى means roughly “then,” “in that case,” or “that means.” It often converts information into a conclusion, decision, or next step.

law il-igtimāʿ is-sāʿa tisʿa, yibʾa lāzim nitḥarrak badri

If the meeting is at nine, then we have to leave early.

in-nūr maṭfi, yibʾa yimkin maḥaddish fi l-maktab

The light is off, so maybe nobody is in the office. (inference)

inta khallaṣt il-guzʾ il-ʾawwil? yibʾa ʾana ʾabdaʾ fi t-tāni

Have you finished the first part? Then I’ll start on the second.

This discourse يبقى is not ordinary future morphology and does not agree with the subject of the following clause. Lexical بقى / بيبقى “become/be usually” has its own verbal paradigm; the conclusion marker is a fixed third-person-looking form.

💡
Test discourse يبقى by paraphrasing it as “in that case.” If the meaning is literal becoming or a recurring state, you are dealing with the lexical verb instead.

Rule 3: attached فـ presents the direct next outcome

فـ joins to the following word and packages the second clause as the prompt result, response, or inference. It is more compact than عشان كده.

id-dunya maṭarit fa-sh-shāriʿ itzaḥam bi-surʿa

It rained, so the street quickly became congested.

il-gaww khāniʾ, fa-shaghghal il-marwaḥa shwayya

It’s stuffy, so turn the fan on for a while. (resulting instruction)

il-ʿamīl wāfaʾ fa-ḥanibdaʾ it-tanfīz bukra

The client agreed, so we’ll start implementation tomorrow.

The first pair has different subjects; both are overt. The second has a state followed by an instruction. The third links a completed decision to a projected result. For the wider temporal and responsive uses, see result and sequence with فـ.

Rule 4: subject continuity does not come from the connector

With a shared subject, the result verb can stand without a repeated pronoun. With a changed or contrastive subject, state the new subject.

simiʿt il-monabbih fa-ʾomt min is-sarīr ʿala ṭūl

I heard the alarm, so I got out of bed immediately. (same subject)

ʾana khallaṣt it-taṣmīm, yibʾa Nūra tirāgiʿ il-ʾarʾām

I have finished the design, so Noura should review the figures. (different subject)

il-mudīr musāfir, ʿashān kida Mona hiyya lli ḥatimḍi l-waraʾ

The manager is away, so Mona is the one who will sign the papers.

English requires pronouns in many coordinated clauses. Egyptian repeats them for focus or contrast, not simply to fill every subject slot.

Rule 5: choose aspect for the kind of result

A one-time cause commonly takes a perfect result; a recurring condition commonly takes a b-imperfect result. A current premise can lead to a future or modal conclusion.

koll ma l-ʾasʿār bitzīd binishtiri kammiyya ʾaʾall, wi-ʿashān kida l-maṣrūf thābit

Whenever prices rise, we buy less, and that’s why spending stays stable.

il-mobāyl fiṣil, fa-ma-radditish ʿala l-mukālama

My phone died, so I did not answer the call.

mafīsh waʾt kifāya, yibʾa nikammil in-niʾāsh bukra

There is not enough time, so let’s continue the discussion tomorrow.

The bare نكمل after conclusion يبقى presents a proposed next action. It is not an independently asserted b-imperfect habit.

Rule 6: negation stays inside the result clause

Attach فـ outside the negative word: فما... After عشان كده or يبقى, choose the ordinary negative required by the result predicate.

il-maḥall ʾafal badri fa-ma-lḥaʾnāsh nishtiri l-ḥāga

The shop closed early, so we did not manage to buy the item.

huwwa ma-baʿatsh it-taʾkīd, ʿashān kida l-ḥagz mish nihāʾi

He did not send the confirmation, so the booking is not final.

law mafīsh ḥadd fi l-istiʾbāl, yibʾa ma-tsībsh ish-shanṭa hunāk

If nobody is at reception, then do not leave the bag there.

The connectors organize the inference; they do not replace ش.

Comparing the three result strategies

FormCore discourse jobTypical force
عشان كدهpoints back to an established causeexplicit “that’s why”
يبقىdraws a conclusion or next decision“then / in that case”
فـattaches the direct outcome or responsecompact “so / and then”

in-nuskha fīha ʾakhṭāʾ, ʿashān kida ma-baʿatt-hāsh; yibʾa nirāgiʿha l-ʾawwil

The version has errors, so I did not send it; in that case, let’s review it first.

One stretch can contain an explained outcome and then a practical conclusion. Using one English so for both would hide the different discourse steps.

A short decision exchange

il-ʿamīl ṭalab taʿdīlen gudād

The client requested two new changes.

yibʾa mish ḥanisallim in-nuskha n-naharda

Then we will not deliver the version today.

bi-ḍ-ḍabṭ, wi-ʿashān kida lāzim niballigho bi-l-mīʿād il-gidīd

Exactly, and that is why we have to tell him the new deadline.

ṭabb kallimo dilwaʾti fa-nibʾa wāḍḥīn min il-ʾawwil

Then call him now so we are clear from the start.

Here final فـ links the instruction to its intended/resulting state. It is not the fixed inferential يبقى used in the second turn.

Register and variation

عشان كده، يبقى، فـ are normal mainstream Cairo resources (informal/neutral). لذلك، لذا، إذن belong mainly to formal MSA-oriented prose and prepared speech (formal). بالتالي is common in professional and media speech (professional/formal-leaning) and also enters educated conversation. A formal marker is a legitimate style choice, not an error, when the surrounding register supports it.

Alexandrian, Delta, Upper Egyptian, Bedouin, class, age, and community repertoires differ in connector frequency and pronunciation (regional/social). Scripted argument and comedy may repeat يبقى for rhetorical rhythm (performance language).

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing cause and result around

Incorrect for the intended logic—عشان كده should introduce the result, not the cause.

iṭ-ṭarīʾ kān maʾfūl, ʿashān kida khadna shāriʿ wara l-maḥaṭṭa

The road was closed, so we took a street behind the station.

2. Making discourse-marker يبقى agree with the next subject.

Incorrect—the inferential marker is fixed يبقى; it does not agree with إحنا.

il-khuṭṭa tghayyarit, yibʾa ʾiḥna nirattib il-ʾawlawiyyāt tāni

The plan changed, so we should reorganize the priorities.

3. Writing attached فـ as a separate word.

Incorrect house spelling—result فـ attaches to the following negative verb.

il-mobāyl fiṣil fa-ma-radditish ʿala ʾākhir mukālama

My phone died, so I did not answer the last call.

4. Using formal لذلك as unmarked casual speech.

Grammatical code-switching, but لذلك is mismatched with this ordinary casual sentence.

ʾana taʿbān, ʿashān kida ḥarūḥ ʾanām badri

I’m tired, so I’m going to bed early.

5. Giving a habitual cause a one-time result by accident.

Incorrect for the intended weekly pattern—the perfect result describes one completed Thursday.

ish-shughl biyizīd koll khamīs, fa-biniʾʿud li-waʾt mitʾakhkhar

Work increases every Thursday, so we stay late.
