The Egyptian b-imperfect presents a situation from inside: as a process now, a repeated habit, a general truth, or characteristic behavior. Mainstream Cairene بيكتب can therefore mean “he is writing” or “he writes.” Time expressions and discourse—not two separate conjugations—select the natural English translation.
The بـ is not simply an English “present tense” marker. A bare imperfect appears after words such as عايز and لازم, حـ projects a future, participles often describe a current state, and كان + b-imperfect moves an activity into a past frame.
See person prefixes and suffixes for form building; this page concentrates on what the completed b-imperfect construction does in discourse.
The practical b-imperfect paradigm
Learn شرب / بيشرب shirib / biyishrab “drink” as a perfect–imperfect pair. Person marking is built into the imperfect around the lexical stem.
| Subject | B-imperfect | Romanization |
|---|---|---|
| أنا | بشرب | bashrab |
| إنت | بتشرب | bitishrab |
| إنتي | بتشربي | bitishrabi |
| هو | بيشرب | biyishrab |
| هي | بتشرب | bitishrab |
| إحنا | بنشرب | binishrab |
| إنتوا | بتشربوا | bitishrabu |
| هم | بيشربوا | biyishrabu |
أنا بشرب القهوة من غير سكر.
ʾana bashrab il-ʾahwa min ghēr sukkar.
I drink coffee without sugar. (habit, informal)
إنتي بتشربي ميه كفاية في الشغل؟
ʾinti bitishrabi mayya kifāya fi sh-shoghl?
Do you drink enough water at work? (to one woman, habitual)
هم بيشربوا شاي في البلكونة دلوقتي.
humma biyishrabu shāy fi l-balkōna dilwaʾti.
They're drinking tea on the balcony now. (ongoing)
An explicit pronoun is useful for contrast or clarity. It is not required in every sentence, because prefixes and suffixes already identify most subjects.
Process and habit use the same form
This time-context minimal pair keeps the verb and subject unchanged:
هو بيكتب التقرير دلوقتي.
huwwa biyiktib it-taʾrīr dilwaʾti.
He's writing the report now. (ongoing process)
هو بيكتب تقرير كل أسبوع.
huwwa biyiktib taʾrīr koll ʾusbūʿ.
He writes a report every week. (habit)
English changes between is writing and writes. Egyptian leaves بيكتب intact and lets دلوقتي “now” versus كل أسبوع “every week” do the disambiguating. Without an explicit time phrase, the shared situation and kind of verb usually decide.
The b-imperfect does not guarantee that an action is occurring at this second. أنا بشتغل في بنك normally states an occupation, not that the speaker is working during the conversation.
أنا بشتغل في بنك، بس النهارده أجازة.
ʾana bashtaghal fi bank, bass innaharda ʾagāza.
I work at a bank, but today is a day off. (characteristic employment)
General truths and characteristic behavior
The b-imperfect also describes regular properties and generalizations. These need not be literally eternal facts; the speaker presents them as stable within the relevant frame.
الميه بتغلي لما تسخن كفاية.
il-mayya bitighli lamma tiskhan kifāya.
Water boils when it gets hot enough. (general truth)
المفتاح ده بيفتح الباب الخلفي بس.
il-miftāḥ da biyiftaḥ il-bāb il-khalfi bass.
This key only opens the back door. (characteristic function)
أخويا بينسى المواعيد لو ماكتبهاش.
ʾakhūya biyinsa l-mawāʿīd law ma-katabhāsh.
My brother forgets appointments if he doesn't write them down. (characteristic tendency)
These uses explain why the label “present continuous” is too narrow. Egyptian aspect chooses an internal, unbounded view; repetition and generic force come from the clause and context.
B-imperfect, bare imperfect, and future
The same person-marked imperfect can appear in different outer frames:
| Form | Example | Function |
|---|---|---|
| b-imperfect | بيكتب biyiktib | asserted process, habit, generalization |
| bare imperfect | عايز يكتب ʿāyiz yiktib | desired action after a licenser |
| ḥa-imperfect | حيكتب ḥayiktib | projected future |
عايز يكتب للمدير قبل الاجتماع.
ʿāyiz yiktib lil-modīr ʾabl il-igtimāʿ.
He wants to write to the manager before the meeting. (bare imperfect after عايز)
حيكتب للمدير بكرة.
ḥayiktib lil-modīr bukra.
He'll write to the manager tomorrow. (future projection)
Omitting بـ from an ordinary independent habit does not make the sentence “more basic”; it changes the licensing structure. Adding بـ after عايز is equally wrong because the complement is not independently asserted.
Negation and attached objects
For an ordinary present or habitual negative, wrap ما...ش around the entire b-imperfect. Keep any object clitic inside.
بكلمه كل يوم بعد الشغل.
bakallimu koll yōm baʿd ish-shoghl.
I call him every day after work. (habit)
مابكلمهوش وهو في الشغل.
ma-bakallimhūsh wi-huwwa fi sh-shoghl.
I don't call him while he's at work. (habitual negative)
The positive-to-negative pair preserves the b-imperfect بكلمـ. English do not is not a separate Egyptian auxiliary, and ـه remains attached before -ش.
B-imperfect versus participle
The b-imperfect foregrounds an event or process. A participle can instead describe a state, result, or planned arrangement: هو نايم “he is asleep,” هي رايحة الشغل “she is going to work / headed to work.” Verb meaning matters, so English be + -ing cannot choose mechanically.
هو بينام بدري كل يوم، بس دلوقتي هو نايم بجد.
huwwa biyinām badri koll yōm, bass dilwaʾti huwwa nāyim bi-gadd.
He goes to sleep early every day, but right now he really is asleep. (habit versus state)
A two-turn Cairo dialogue
أ: بتعمل إيه بعد الشغل عادة؟
A: bitiʿmil ʾēh baʿd ish-shoghl ʿāda?
A: What do you usually do after work? (informal, to one man)
ب: بروح الجيم، بس النهارده بقابل صحابي.
B: barūḥ il-gīm, bass innaharda baʾābil ṣuḥābi.
B: I go to the gym, but today I'm meeting my friends. (habit then current plan)
Register and variation
These functions are mainstream urban Cairene (informal/neutral). MSA imperfect forms use a different mood and agreement system (formal); their endings do not belong in these examples. Some regional Egyptian varieties distribute b- and bare forms differently or use different progressives. عمّال + imperfect can intensify an ongoing process in Cairo, while participial and posture-based progressives vary by region and discourse.
Common Mistakes
❌ هو يشتغل في بنك كل يوم.
Incorrect for the intended ordinary Cairene independent habit — the b-imperfect is expected.
✅ هو بيشتغل في بنك كل يوم.
huwwa biyishtaghal fi bank koll yōm.
He works at a bank every day. (informal)
❌ هو عايز بيشتغل من البيت.
Incorrect — عايز licenses a bare imperfect complement.
✅ هو عايز يشتغل من البيت.
huwwa ʿāyiz yishtaghal min il-bēt.
He wants to work from home. (informal)
❌ ما بكلم هوش بالليل.
Incorrect — the b-prefix, object clitic, and negative suffix belong to one verb word.
✅ مابكلمهوش بالليل.
ma-bakallimhūsh bil-lēl.
I don't call him at night. (informal)
❌ هو يكتب الآن.
Mismatched register for ordinary Cairene conversation — this is grammatical formal MSA, not a pronunciation of بيكتب دلوقتي.
✅ هو بيكتب دلوقتي.
huwwa biyiktib dilwaʾti.
He's writing now. (informal, mainstream Cairo)
Key Takeaways
- The b-imperfect covers ongoing processes, habits, generalizations, and characteristic behavior.
- Context distinguishes English “is doing” from “does”; Egyptian need not change the form.
- Use a bare imperfect after a licenser and حـ for future projection.
- Keep بـ, object clitics, and negative ما...ش joined in the verb complex.
