Mainstream Cairene uses the b-imperfect for many activities in progress: بيتكلم can mean “he is talking,” and بجهز can mean “I'm getting things ready.” There is no obligatory equivalent of English am/is/are + -ing. The ongoing reading comes from an event viewed from inside, supported by the situation, a time phrase, or an answer to “What are you doing?”
The same b-imperfect also expresses habits. That overlap is not vagueness to repair with an English tense rule; it is a basic property of the Egyptian system. Participles and marked عمّال constructions occupy neighboring territory but contribute different viewpoints.
The person forms stay ordinary
With شرب / يشرب shirib / yishrab “drink,” the b-imperfect paradigm is the same whether the context is current or habitual.
| Subject | B-imperfect | Romanization |
|---|---|---|
istanna shwayya, ʾana bashrab il-ʾahwa
Wait a moment; I'm drinking my coffee. (current activity)
إنتوا بتشربوا الشاي من غيري؟
ʾintu bitishrabu sh-shāy min ghēri?
Are you all having tea without me? (playful, current situation)
Subject agreement is still real even when the English translation uses the same auxiliary are for several persons. Feminine -i and plural -u remain attached to the imperfect.
Diagnostic 1: a live situation supplies “right now”
Speakers do not have to say دلوقتي in every ongoing clause. If someone answers a ringing phone, comments on visible activity, or explains why they cannot respond, the current frame is already active.
ماقدرش أفتحلك؛ بغسل المواعين
maʾdarsh ʾaftaḥlak; baghsil il-mawāʿīn
I can't open the door for you; I'm washing the dishes. (current activity)
وطي صوتك، البيبي بينام
waṭṭi ṣōtak, il-bēbi biyinām
Lower your voice; the baby is falling asleep. (process underway)
The second example uses eventive بينام “is going to sleep/falling asleep.” Once the baby is asleep, the state is normally البيبي نايم il-bēbi nāyim, with a participle.
Diagnostic 2: time expressions can force a current window
دلوقتي “now,” حاليا “currently” (professional/formal-leaning), النهارده “today,” and duration phrases such as من الصبح “since morning” can locate an event in an open current interval.
الفني بيغير الكابل دلوقتي
il-fanni biyighayyar il-kābil dilwaʾti
The technician is changing the cable now. (ongoing)
الفني بيغير الكابل كل ست شهور
il-fanni biyighayyar il-kābil kull sitt shuhūr
The technician changes the cable every six months. (habitual)
This time-context minimal pair proves that بيغير itself is compatible with both readings. The time phrase, not a hidden conjugation, does the decisive work.
Diagnostic 3: eventive verbs favor process; states often favor participles
Actions with visible development—writing, cooking, repairing, searching—read naturally as ongoing in the b-imperfect. Current states and results often use an active participle: فاهم “understanding,” عارف “knowing,” نايم “asleep,” لابس “wearing.” This division is lexical, not a mechanical ban on particular roots.
بدور على الشاحن، بس مش لاقيه
badawwar ʿala sh-shāḥin, bass mish lāʾīh
I'm looking for the charger, but I can't find it. (activity followed by resulting state)
هي لابسة الجاكت وبتقفل الشنطة
hiyya lābsa l-gākit wi-bitiʾfil ish-shanṭa
She's wearing the jacket and closing the bag. (state plus activity)
English uses progressive-looking forms in both clauses, but Egyptian distinguishes the state لابسة from the dynamic event بتقفل. The b-imperfect versus participle page develops this lexical contrast.
Current negation and scope
Both circumfixal ما...ش and independent مش + b-imperfect occur with current events. مش بيـ is especially transparent when denying or correcting what someone thinks is happening now; مابيـ...ش is especially common for habits, though it can also describe a current non-event.
هو بيحمل الملفات على السيرفر دلوقتي
huwwa biyiḥammil il-milaffāt ʿala s-sērfar dilwaʾti
He's uploading the files to the server now. (positive current event)
هو مش بيحمل الملفات؛ هو بيرتبها
huwwa mish biyiḥammil il-milaffāt; huwwa biyirattibha
He isn't uploading the files; he's organizing them. (current correction)
The object ـها in بيرتبها attaches directly to the verb. With circumfixal negation it would come before final ـش: مابيرتبهاش.
Ongoing does not automatically mean عمّال
The neutral answer to “What are you doing?” is normally a b-imperfect. عمّال + b-imperfect adds marked persistence, conspicuous repetition, or an evaluative stance; it is not required simply because English uses a progressive.
أنا بكلم خدمة العملاء عشان أغير المعاد
ʾana bakallim khidmit il-ʿumala ʿashān ʾaghayyar il-miʿād
I'm calling customer service to change the appointment. (neutral ongoing)
A two-turn Cairo dialogue
بتعملي إيه في المطبخ من بدري؟
bitiʿmali ʾēh fil-maṭbakh min badri?
What have you been doing in the kitchen all this time? (to one woman; informal)
بجهز الأكل للضيوف، ولسه بقطع السلطة
bagahhiz il-ʾakl liḍ-ḍuyūf, wi-lissa baʾaṭṭaʿ is-salaṭa
I'm getting the food ready for the guests, and I'm still chopping the salad. (ongoing activities)
Register and variation
The ongoing b-imperfect is mainstream Cairene (informal/neutral). Formal MSA uses its own imperfect and contextual strategies (formal); English be + -ing does not license importing an MSA mood ending. Progressive choices differ across Egyptian regions and speaker communities, and عمّال, posture expressions, or participles can be more or less frequent by region, age, class, genre, and stance. The Cairo baseline here does not erase that variation.
Common Mistakes
Removing b- because English has be + -ing
❌ أنا أجهز الأكل دلوقتي
Incorrect for the intended ordinary independent Cairo statement—the current activity uses b-.
✅ أنا بجهز الأكل دلوقتي
ʾana bagahhiz il-ʾakl dilwaʾti
I'm getting the food ready now.
Using a b-imperfect for an established state
❌ هو بينام دلوقتي من ساعتين
Wrong for the intended state ‘has been asleep’—بينام presents the transition or a habit.
✅ هو نايم من ساعتين
huwwa nāyim min sāʿtēn
He's been asleep for two hours. (current state)
Treating ongoing and habitual as separate paradigms
❌ لازم أغير شكل الفعل عشان أقول دلوقتي
Incorrect analysis—the b-imperfect can keep the same form; context changes the reading.
✅ هي بتذاكر كل يوم، وبتذاكر دلوقتي كمان
hiyya bitizākir kull yōm, wi-bitizākir dilwaʾti kamān
She studies every day, and she's studying now too.
Adding an MSA mood vowel
هي بتقفل المحل دلوقتي
hiyya bitiʾfil il-maḥall dilwaʾti
hiya bitaqfilu l-maḥalla dilwaqti
Pronunciation error—ordinary Cairene has no final MSA mood or case endings here.
Key Takeaways
Use the ordinary b-imperfect for a dynamic event overlapping the active conversational time window. Context can make the same form ongoing or habitual. Choose a participle when Egyptian lexical convention presents a state or result, and reserve عمّال for a marked persistent or conspicuous viewpoint.
