حط Collocations

Everyday Cairene حط covers physical “put,” adding an ingredient, setting a device, and several abstract collocations such as حط خطة “make/set a plan” and حط في الاعتبار “take into account.” The verb is stable, but its complement frame is not chosen from English: the location or conventional phrase determines whether Egyptian uses في، على، جنب, or no preposition.

As a geminate verb, common forms include perfect حطّ / حطيت, b-imperfect بيحط, imperative حطّ, and negative ماحطّش / ماتحطّش. The stem alternations belong to the wider geminate verb system.

Rule 1: choose the preposition from the resulting location

حط المفاتيح في الدرج عشان ماتضيعش

ḥuṭṭ il-mafātīḥ fi d-durg ʿashān ma-tḍīʿsh

Put the keys in the drawer so they don’t get lost. (to a man)

حطيت الورق على مكتب المدير

ḥaṭṭēt il-waraʾ ʿala maktab il-modīr

I put the papers on the manager’s desk.

حط الكرسي جنب الشباك مش قدام الباب

ḥuṭṭ il-kursi ganb ish-shubbāk mish ʾuddām il-bāb

Put the chair beside the window, not in front of the door.

English put requires a location too, but its prepositions do not predict Egyptian mechanically. Visualize the result: inside في, on a surface على, beside جنب.

💡
Do not memorize حط with one universal preposition. Memorize the result frame: حط في، حط على، حط جنب.

Rule 2: with food and drink, حط often means “add”

حط سكر قد إيه في الشاي؟

ḥaṭṭ sukkar ʾadd ʾēh fish-shāy?

How much sugar did he put in the tea?

ماتحطيش ملح كتير قبل ما تدوقي الشوربة

ma-tiḥuṭṭīsh milḥ kitīr ʾabl ma tidūʾi sh-shorba

Don’t add too much salt before tasting the soup. (to a woman)

The added substance is the direct object; the food or drink is the في container. English learners sometimes reverse them because add salt to the soup uses to.

Rule 3: object clitics replace the thing placed

الكتاب ده مهم، حطه في شنطتك

il-kitāb da mohemm, ḥuṭṭu fi shanṭitak

This book is important; put it in your bag. (to a man)

العلبة كانت في التلاجة، بس أنا طلعتها وحطيتها بره

il-ʿolba kānit fit-tallāga, bass ʾana ṭallaʿtha wi-ḥaṭṭētha barra

The container was in the fridge, but I took it out and put it outside.

The suffix agrees with the object: حطه masculine, حطها feminine, حطهم plural. The location remains separate.

Rule 4: device settings extend physical placement

حط الموبايل على الصامت قبل المحاضرة

ḥuṭṭ il-mobāyl ʿala ṣ-ṣāmit ʾabl il-moḥāḍara

Put your phone on silent before the lecture.

حطيت التكييف على أربعة وعشرين

ḥaṭṭēt it-takyīf ʿala ʾarbaʿa wi-ʿishrīn

I set the air conditioner to twenty-four.

The على phrase names the resulting setting. These collocations are productive with familiar controls, but not every English set is translated by حط.

Rule 5: learn abstract combinations as whole predicates

حطينا خطة نمشي عليها لحد آخر الشهر

ḥaṭṭēna khoṭṭa nimshi ʿalēha la-ḥadd ʾākhir ish-shahr

We made a plan to follow until the end of the month.

لازم نحط تكلفة النقل في الاعتبار

lāzim niḥuṭṭ taklifit in-naʾl fi l-iʿtibār

We need to take the transport cost into account.

صاحب الشقة حط شرط جديد في العقد

ṣāḥib ish-shaʾʾa ḥaṭṭ sharṭ gidīd fi l-ʿaʾd

The landlord added a new condition to the contract.

حط خطة is ordinary conversational language; وضع خطة is more formal/MSA-oriented. في الاعتبار is relatively careful/professional but common in educated Egyptian meetings.

Three everyday situations

In the kitchen, حط means add or place. With a phone, it selects a setting. At work, it helps formulate plans and constraints. These are related extensions, but each has its own complement.

حط الأكل في التلاجة وحط الموبايل على الشاحن

ḥuṭṭ il-ʾakl fit-tallāga wi-ḥuṭṭ il-mobāyl ʿala sh-shāḥin

Put the food in the fridge and put the phone on the charger.

A practical dialogue

ـ أحط الملف فين؟ ـ حطه على المكتب جنب اللابتوب. ـ والنسخة القديمة؟ ـ ماتحطهاش معاه؛ خليها في الدرج

— ʾaḥuṭṭ il-malaff fēn? — ḥuṭṭu ʿala l-maktab ganb il-lābtōb. — wi-n-nuskha l-ʾadīma? — ma-tiḥuṭṭhāsh maʿāh; khallīha fi d-durg

— Where should I put the file? — Put it on the desk beside the laptop. — And the old copy? — Don’t put it with that one; leave it in the drawer.

The clitics retrieve the two files, while the location phrases keep their distinct spatial relations.

Register and variation

حط and these physical/device collocations are mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal writing often uses وضع، أضاف، أدرج، أخذ في الاعتبار according to meaning (formal). Speakers legitimately style-shift in professional settings. Regional varieties differ in the vowel of the imperfect and in preferred abstract collocations (regional/social).

Common Mistakes

❌ حطيت السكر إلى الشاي

Incorrect English-influenced destination preposition for adding an ingredient.

✅ حطيت شوية سكر في الشاي

ḥaṭṭēt shwayyit sukkar fish-shāy

I put a little sugar in the tea.

❌ حط الكتاب

Incomplete in the intended placement instruction—حط normally needs a recoverable resulting location.

✅ حط الكتاب على الرف اللي فوق

ḥuṭṭ il-kitāb ʿala r-raff illi fōʾ

Put the book on the upper shelf.

❌ ماتحطها فيش الدرج

Incorrect negative envelope—the final ـش attaches to حطها, outside the object clitic.

✅ ماتحطهاش في الدرج الصغير

ma-tiḥuṭṭhāsh fi d-durg iṣ-ṣoghayyar

Don’t put it in the small drawer.

Register mismatch, not grammatical error

ضع الهاتف على الوضع الصامت

ḍaʿ il-hātifa ʿala l-waḍʿi ṣ-ṣāmit

Put the phone on silent mode. (formal MSA)

This sentence is grammatical (formal), but it would sound like an instruction manual in an intimate Cairo exchange. حطي الموبايل على الصامت يا ماما is natural (informal). The contrast is register, not correctness.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose في، على, or another location expression from the resulting spatial relation.
  • With food and drink, حط commonly means “add”; the ingredient is the direct object.
  • Object clitics attach to حط, while the location stays separate.
  • Device settings and abstract combinations are conventional extensions that must be learned as whole frames.
