جرّب and عمل in Activity Collocations

Egyptian جرّب and عمل can both precede an activity, but they package it differently. جرّب presents something as a test, experiment, or attempt; عمل presents it as an activity someone carries out, produces, or completes. English try, do, and make overlap with these meanings, but English alone cannot select the Egyptian collocation.

The productive frames are جرّب + noun, جرّب + bare imperfect, and عمل + conventional activity/result noun. Their grammar is stable even when the best English translation changes.

The core substitution frames

FrameReplaceable slotWhat the frame profiles
جرّب + objectالتطبيق، القميص، الطريقةtest or experience something
جرّب + bare imperfectتقفل، تسأل، تغيرattempt an action as a possible solution
عمل + activity nounمكالمة، تمرين، تحليلcarry out a named activity
عمل + result nounحساب، نسخة، جدولcreate a conventional result

Common forms are جرّب / بيجرّب / جرّب / ماجرّبش and عمل / بيعمل / اعمل / ماعملش. A following action after جرّب is normally bare: the first verb carries tense, aspect, and negation.

Rule 1: جرّب plus a noun tests an item, method, or experience

جربت التطبيق الجديد يومين قبل ما أشترك

garrabt it-taṭbīʾ il-gidīd yōmēn ʾabl ma ʾashtarik

I tried the new app for two days before subscribing.

جربي القميص الأول وشوفي مقاسه مناسب ولا لأ

garribi l-ʾamīṣ il-ʾawwil wi-shūfi maʾāsu monāseb walla laʾ

Try the shirt on first and see whether the size works. (to a woman)

The direct object is what enters the trial. With clothes, جرّب القميص naturally includes trying it on; with food, a service, or an app, it means sampling or testing it. The exact English particle belongs to English, not to the Arabic frame.

💡
Ask what is under evaluation. If it is a thing or method, use جرّب + noun. If it is a proposed action, use جرّب + bare imperfect.

Rule 2: جرّب plus a bare imperfect proposes an attempt

جرب تقفل البرنامج وتفتحه تاني

garrab tiʾfil il-barnāmig wi-tiftaḥu tāni

Try closing the program and opening it again. (to a man)

جربنا نسأل في فرع تاني، بس المقاس كان خلصان

garrabna nisʾal fi farʿ tāni, bass il-maʾās kān khalṣān

We tried asking at another branch, but the size was sold out.

The lower verb agrees with the person attempting: تقفل with singular “you,” نسأل with “we.” It lacks habitual بـ because جرّب selects an action as a bounded proposal, not as an independently asserted routine. Compare the wider control pattern on the control and raising page.

Negation normally wraps جرّب, and its scope is “did not even attempt.”

ماجربتش أغير كلمة السر لسه

ma-garrabtish ʾaghayyar kilmit is-sirr lissa

I haven’t tried changing the password yet.

Negating only the lower action gives a different message and needs its own context. Do not automatically put ـش on both verbs.

Rule 3: عمل selects conventionally named activities and results

عملت مكالمة ضرورية قبل الاجتماع

ʿamilt mokālma ḍarūriyya ʾabl il-igtimāʿ

I made an important call before the meeting.

بنعمل تمرين خفيف كل يوم بعد الشغل

biniʿmil tamrīn khafīf koll yōm baʿd ish-shughl

We do a light workout every day after work.

اعمل نسخة احتياطية قبل ما تمسح الملفات

iʿmil nuskha iḥtiyāṭiyya ʾabl ma timsaḥ il-malafāt

Make a backup before deleting the files. (to a man)

These combinations are conventional predicates. عمل مكالمة denotes performing the call; عمل نسخة creates a result. There is no single Arabic boundary matching English do versus make. Learn the noun with its usual verb, as explained more broadly under light and support verbs.

Some nouns choose a different verb altogether: ordinary Cairene says خد قرار “make a decision,” not a mechanical translation with عمل. The lexical restriction is real; there is no completely reliable shortcut.

Rule 4: clitics retrieve the tested thing or the activity noun

البرنامج شكله مفيد، بس لازم أجربه بنفسي

il-barnāmig shaklu mofīd, bass lāzim ʾagarrabu bi-nafsi

The program looks useful, but I need to try it myself.

المكالمة مهمة؛ هعملها بعد ما أوصل البيت

il-mokālma mohimma; haʿmilha baʿd ma ʾōṣal il-bēt

The call is important; I’ll make it after I get home.

In أجربه, ـه is the thing tested. In هعملها, ـها retrieves the feminine noun المكالمة. The suffix does not mean an abstract English it independently; its gender comes from the Arabic antecedent.

Rule 5: aspect belongs to the support verb

بجرب طريقة جديدة لتنظيم المصاريف الشهر ده

bagarrab ṭarīʾa gidīda li-tanẓīm il-maṣārīf ish-shahr da

I’m trying a new way to organize expenses this month.

ماعملناش الاختبار عشان المعمل كان مقفول

ma-ʿamilnāsh il-ikhtibār ʿashān il-maʿmal kān maʾfūl

We didn’t do the test because the lab was closed.

The b-imperfect in بجرب presents an ongoing experiment. The perfect negative ماعملناش denies completion of the activity. The noun does not carry the event’s tense.

Three everyday situations

For troubleshooting, جرّب + action offers a low-cost next step. When shopping or eating out, جرّب + noun invites direct experience. At work or the gym, عمل + activity noun names the task itself.

لو الطعم حراق عليك، جرب الصوص الأبيض

law iṭ-ṭaʿm ḥarrāʾ ʿalēk, garrab iṣ-ṣōṣ il-ʾabyaḍ

If the flavor is too spicy for you, try the white sauce.

A practical dialogue

ـ التطبيق بيقف كل شوية. ـ جرب تمسحه وتنزله تاني. ـ عملت كده ولسه بيقف. ـ طب جرب النسخة اللي على الموقع

— it-taṭbīʾ biyʾaf koll shwayya. — garrab timsaḥu wi-tinazzilu tāni. — ʿamilt kida wi-lissa biyʾaf. — ṭabb garrab in-nuskha lli ʿala l-mawʾiʿ

— The app keeps freezing. — Try deleting and reinstalling it. — I did that, and it still freezes. — Then try the version on the website.

Here عملت كده means “I did that”: كده retrieves the previously proposed procedure. جرّب continues to frame each suggestion as a test rather than a guaranteed fix.

Register and social fit

These frames are mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). In formal reports, speakers may choose اختبر التطبيق، أجرى تحليلا، أجرى مكالمة (formal/MSA-influenced). That wording is grammatical, but it can sound institutional inside intimate conversation. Conversely, عمل تحليل is entirely normal when a patient discusses a medical test; it is not defective Arabic.

أجرى الفريق اختبارا شاملا للنظام

ʾajrā l-farīqu ikhtibāran shāmilan lin-niẓām

The team conducted a comprehensive test of the system. (formal MSA wording)

The formal example intentionally belongs to an MSA report and therefore carries formal morphology; do not treat it as the Cairene production model.

Common Mistakes

❌ جربت بغير كلمة السر

Incorrect after جرّب for one attempt—the following action should be bare, without habitual بـ.

✅ جربت أغير كلمة السر من الموبايل

garrabt ʾaghayyar kilmit is-sirr min il-mobāyl

I tried changing the password from my phone.

❌ عملت قرار من غير ما أكلمهم

English-shaped support verb—ordinary Cairene uses خد with قرار.

✅ خدت قرار بعد ما كلمت كل الفريق

khadt ʾarār baʿd ma kallimt koll il-farīʾ

I made a decision after speaking to the whole team.

❌ جربت على التطبيق الجديد

Incorrect imported preposition—the tested item is the direct object of جرّب.

✅ جربت التطبيق على موبايل قديم

garrabt it-taṭbīʾ ʿala mobāyl ʾadīm

I tested the app on an old phone.

❌ ماجربتش أفتحهش

Incorrect double negative for ‘I didn’t try to open it’—the negative envelope belongs to جرّب.

✅ ماجربتش أفتحه من اللابتوب

ma-garrabtish ʾaftaḥu min il-lābtōb

I didn’t try opening it from the laptop.

Key Takeaways

  • جرّب + noun tests a thing; جرّب + bare imperfect attempts an action.
  • عمل + noun packages a conventionally named activity or result; its collocations must be learned lexically.
  • Tense, aspect, and negation appear on جرّب or عمل, not on the activity noun.
  • Clitics retrieve Arabic antecedents and follow their grammatical gender.
