Egyptian خلّى forms a productive network around “cause,” “let,” “keep,” and “leave.” Its stable core is that one participant causes another participant or thing to enter, continue, or be allowed into a state or action. Context determines whether natural English chooses make, let, keep, or leave.
The key frames are خلّى + object + predicate and خلّى + object + bare imperfect. The object may be a full noun phrase or an attached pronoun. Learn the frame rather than translating English causatives word by word.
Core substitution frames
| Frame | Replaceable slot | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| خلّى + object + adjective/state | مبسوط، مفتوح، جاهز | made/kept/left the object in a state |
| خلّى + object + bare imperfect | يستنى، يدخل، يجرب | made/let the object perform an action |
| خلّي + object + location/possession | هنا، معاك، على المكتب | leave/keep the object somewhere |
| خلّيني + bare imperfect | أفكر، أشوف، أشرح | let me / give me space to act |
The verb is Form II: perfect خلّى, b-imperfect بيخلّي, imperative خلّي, and negative ماخلّاش. The following action is bare—without habitual بـ.
Rule 1: a following predicate names the caused state
الخبر خلاني مبسوط طول اليوم
il-khabar khallāni mabsūṭ ṭūl il-yōm
The news made me happy all day.
سيب الشباك مفتوح وخلي الباب مقفول
sīb ish-shubbāk maftūḥ wi-khalli l-bāb maʾfūl
Leave the window open and keep the door closed. (to a man)
In the first sentence, the event causes an emotional state. In the second, خلّي maintains a physical state. No equivalent of English to be appears before the adjective.
Rule 2: a following action uses the bare imperfect
المدير خلانا نستنى نص ساعة
il-modīr khallāna nistanna nuṣṣ sāʿa
The manager made us wait for half an hour.
خليه يجرب يحل المشكلة لوحده الأول
khallīh yigarrab yiḥill il-moshkila li-waḥdu l-ʾawwil
Let him try to solve the problem by himself first.
The object of خلّى controls the following verb: ـنا corresponds to نستنى, while ـه corresponds to يجرب. English uses an uninflected wait/try; Egyptian preserves person agreement on the bare imperfect. The wider syntax is explained under control and raising.
Whether the frame means coercive “make” or permissive “let” comes from agency and context. Waiting imposed by a manager favors “made”; allowing someone to try favors “let.”
Rule 3: clitics attach to خلّى, not to the lower verb
| Object | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| me | خلّاني | khallāni |
| you, masculine | خلّاك | khallāk |
| him | خلّاه | khallāh |
| her | خلّاها | khallāha |
| us | خلّانا | khallāna |
| them | خلّاهم | khallāhom |
الزحمة خلتها تغير الطريق
iz-zaḥma khallitha tighayyar iṭ-ṭarīʾ
Traffic made her change route.
ماتخليش كلامهم يغير رأيك بسرعة
ma-tkhallīsh kalāmhom yighayyar raʾyak bi-surʿa
Don’t let what they say change your mind quickly. (to a man)
The negative envelope wraps the matrix verb ماتخليش. The lower verb stays bare unless its own event is independently negated.
Rule 4: خلّيني is a conventional turn-management expression
خلّيني + bare imperfect can request time, floor, or permission to act. Its force is often softer than a command to the listener because the speaker frames the desired action as space for themselves.
خليني أفكر في الموضوع وأرد عليك بكرة
khallīni ʾafakkar fi l-mawḍūʿ wi-ʾarudd ʿalēk bukra
Let me think about it and get back to you tomorrow.
خليني أشرح قصدي قبل ما تحكم
khallīni ʾashraḥ ʾaṣdi ʾabl ma tiḥkum
Let me explain what I mean before you judge.
With sharp intonation, خلّيني can still sound insistent. A calm contour and a reason make it easier to grant.
Rule 5: location and possession extend the same result frame
خلي المفتاح معاك لحد ما أرجع
khalli l-miftāḥ maʿāk la-ḥadd ma ʾargaʿ
Keep the key with you until I return. (to a man)
خلوا الطلبات على المكتب عشان أراجعها
khallu ṭ-ṭalabāt ʿala l-maktab ʿashān ʾarāgiʿha
Leave the applications on the desk so I can review them. (to a group)
The preposition belongs to the resulting location: معاك، على المكتب، في العربية. Do not choose it from the English verb leave.
Three everyday situations
At work, the construction can assign a temporary state:
خلي النسخة دي جاهزة قبل اجتماع الضهر
khalli n-nuskha di gāhza ʾabl igtimāʿ iḍ-ḍuhr
Have this copy ready before the afternoon meeting.
In a family setting, it can grant participation:
خلي العيال يساعدوا في ترتيب السفرة
khalli l-ʿiyāl yisāʿdu fi tartīb is-sufra
Let the children help set the table.
In troubleshooting, it can name a cause:
التحديث الجديد خلى البرنامج يفتح أبطأ
it-taḥdīs il-gidīd khalla l-barnāmig yiftaḥ ʾabṭaʾ
The new update made the program open more slowly.
A dialogue where خلّى performs a real action
ـ أقفل التكييف؟ ـ لأ، خليه شغال شوية عشان الأوضة لسه حرة. ـ ماشي، بس خليني أوطيه
— ʾaʾfil it-takyīf? — laʾ, khallīh shaghghāl shwayya ʿashān il-ʾōḍa lissa ḥarra. — māshi, bass khallīni ʾawaṭṭīh
— Shall I turn off the air conditioner? — No, leave it running a little; the room is still hot. — Okay, but let me turn it down.
The first خليه maintains a state; the second خليني negotiates an alternative action.
Register and variation
This network is mainstream Cairo (informal/neutral). Formal MSA uses related جعل، ترك، سمح لـ constructions with different syntax (formal). They are legitimate formal choices, not wordier substitutes to insert into intimate talk. Regional and social varieties differ in vowels and in how readily خلّى receives permissive versus coercive readings (regional/social).
Common Mistakes
❌ الخبر عملني مبسوط
English-shaped support verb—ordinary Cairene uses خلّى for this caused state.
✅ الخبر خلاني مبسوط وفاجأني في نفس الوقت
il-khabar khallāni mabsūṭ wi-fāgaʾni fi nafs il-waʾt
The news made me happy and surprised me at the same time.
❌ خليه بيجرب البرنامج
Incorrect for one licensed attempt—the lower action after خلّى is bare.
✅ خليه يجرب البرنامج على جهاز تاني
khallīh yigarrab il-barnāmig ʿala gihāz tāni
Let him try the program on another device.
❌ ماتخليهوش يدخلش
Incorrect for ‘don’t let him enter’—the matrix negative already scopes over permission.
✅ ماتخليهوش يدخل الأوضة لوحده
ma-tkhallīhūsh yidkhul il-ʾōḍa li-waḥdu
Don’t let him enter the room alone.
Register mismatch, not grammatical error
اترك المفتاح معك لحين عودتي
utruk il-miftāḥa maʿaka li-ḥīni ʿawdati
Leave the key with you until my return. (formal MSA)
This is grammatical (formal), but it is not the intimate Cairene frame. In an everyday exchange, خلي المفتاح معاك وأنا هرجع بسرعة is the register-matched choice. Register difference is not an error; the error would be presenting the formal sentence as neutral Cairo.
Key Takeaways
- خلّى + object + predicate causes or maintains a state.
- خلّى + object + bare imperfect means “make/let someone act”; context selects coercion or permission.
- Object clitics attach to خلّى, while the lower verb agrees with that object.
- خلّيني and location frames are high-frequency extensions of the same causative-result structure.
