Some adverbs don't describe the action at all — they broadcast the speaker's stance toward it. English does this with sentence adverbs and connective phrases: "after all," "anyway," "luckily." Mandarin has crisp single words for each, and choosing the right one is what makes an argument sound like it was made by a native. This page groups three that learners constantly blur together: 毕竟 (bìjìng) offers a reason so weighty it should settle the matter; 反正 (fǎnzhèng) waves the alternatives away as irrelevant; and 幸亏 (xìngkuī) breathes relief that disaster was dodged. Each frames the clause it introduces with a distinct feeling — a concession, a shrug, or a sigh of relief.
毕竟: "after all" — the overriding reason
毕竟 introduces a fact you consider decisive — the consideration that should override everything else on the table. You use it to temper a judgment ("go easy on him — after all…") or to justify a conclusion by appealing to something fundamental. The English match is "after all," "at the end of the day," "when all's said and done."
他毕竟还是个孩子,别太苛刻了。
tā bìjìng háishì ge háizi, bié tài kēkè le
After all, he's still a child — don't be too hard on him. (neutral) — the overriding reason to soften judgment.
毕竟是第一次做,做成这样已经不错了。
bìjìng shì dì-yī cì zuò, zuò chéng zhèyàng yǐjīng búcuò le
It was the first attempt, after all — turning out this well is already pretty good. (informal)
这个方法虽然慢,但毕竟安全。
zhège fāngfǎ suīrán màn, dàn bìjìng ānquán
This method is slow, but it's safe, when all's said and done. (neutral) — 毕竟 flags the decisive plus.
反正: "anyway / regardless" — the alternatives don't matter
反正 dismisses the surrounding possibilities as beside the point: whatever the circumstances, the outcome stands. It carries a shrug — sometimes stubborn ("say what you like, I'm not going"), sometimes easygoing ("I'm free either way, so…"). It very often sets up or follows a clause listing options that 反正 then sweeps aside.
你别劝了,反正我不去。
nǐ bié quàn le, fǎnzhèng wǒ bú qù
Stop trying to talk me into it — I'm not going, and that's that. (informal) — stubborn dismissal.
反正闲着也是闲着,我帮你一起弄吧。
fǎnzhèng xián zhe yěshì xián zhe, wǒ bāng nǐ yìqǐ nòng ba
I'm sitting around idle anyway, so let me help you with it. (informal) — easygoing shrug.
你信不信随你,反正我说的是真的。
nǐ xìn bú xìn suí nǐ, fǎnzhèng wǒ shuō de shì zhēn de
Believe it or not, that's up to you — either way, what I said is true. (informal)
The contrast with 毕竟 is the whole point. 毕竟 gives a reason that matters most; 反正 declares the reasons don't matter. The fuller discourse behaviour of 反正 — how it links clauses and manages a topic — is treated separately under 反正 as a discourse marker.
幸亏: "luckily" — relief at a near-miss
幸亏 (and its close relatives 幸好 xìnghǎo and 好在 hǎozài) marks a fortunate circumstance that averted a bad outcome. Crucially, it implies a close call: something could have gone wrong, and thanks to the lucky fact it didn't. That is why 幸亏 so often pairs with a following 否则 / 不然 / 要不然 ("otherwise…") clause spelling out the disaster that was dodged.
幸亏你提醒我,不然我就忘了。
xìngkuī nǐ tíxǐng wǒ, bùrán wǒ jiù wàng le
Luckily you reminded me, or I'd have forgotten. (informal) — 幸亏 + the averted 'otherwise.'
幸亏走得早,要不然就赶不上火车了。
xìngkuī zǒu de zǎo, yàoburán jiù gǎnbushàng huǒchē le
Good thing we left early, or we'd have missed the train. (informal)
好在雨停了,我们才能出门。
hǎozài yǔ tíng le, wǒmen cái néng chūmén
Fortunately the rain stopped, so we could go out. (neutral) — 好在 is a common synonym of 幸亏.
幸亏有你,不然我真不知道该怎么办。
xìngkuī yǒu nǐ, bùrán wǒ zhēn bù zhīdào gāi zěnme bàn
Thank goodness I had you, or I honestly wouldn't have known what to do. (informal) — 幸亏有 + noun.
The three at a glance
| Adverb | Stance | Signature companion | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 毕竟 (bìjìng) | a decisive reason that overrides | often a 虽然…但 concession | after all, at the end of the day |
| 反正 (fǎnzhèng) | the alternatives are irrelevant | a "whatever the case" clause | anyway, in any case, regardless |
| 幸亏 (xìngkuī) | relief a bad outcome was avoided | a 否则/不然 "otherwise" clause | luckily, fortunately |
Common Mistakes
1. Using 毕竟 where you mean "anyway." 毕竟 must introduce a reason. To wave off the alternatives with indifference, you need 反正.
❌ 你别问了,毕竟我不告诉你。
Wrong feeling — 'after all I won't tell you' has no overriding reason; for flat refusal use 反正.
✅ 你别问了,反正我不告诉你。
nǐ bié wèn le, fǎnzhèng wǒ bú gàosu nǐ
Stop asking — I'm not telling you, and that's final. — 反正 for the shrug of refusal.
2. Using 反正 where you mean a genuine, decisive reason. If the clause explains why — the fact that tips the balance — it needs 毕竟, not the dismissive 反正.
✅ 别怪他了,他毕竟不是故意的。
bié guài tā le, tā bìjìng bú shì gùyì de
Don't blame him — after all, he didn't do it on purpose. — a decisive reason, so 毕竟.
3. Using 幸亏 with no averted bad outcome. 幸亏 needs a near-miss. For plain good fortune with no danger dodged, a simple 很好 or 太好了 is more natural.
❌ 幸亏我很喜欢这个礼物。
Odd — nothing bad was avoided; 幸亏 implies a rescued situation. Say 我很喜欢这个礼物 for simple pleasure.
✅ 幸亏带了伞,不然就淋成落汤鸡了。
xìngkuī dài le sǎn, bùrán jiù lín chéng luòtāngjī le
Lucky I brought an umbrella, or I'd have been soaked to the bone. — a real disaster dodged.
4. Putting the "otherwise" content in the wrong clause. 幸亏 introduces the fortunate fact; 否则 / 不然 introduces the bad thing that would have happened. Don't swap them.
✅ 幸亏他在家,不然没人开门。
xìngkuī tā zài jiā, bùrán méi rén kāimén
Luckily he was home, otherwise no one would have opened the door. — lucky fact after 幸亏, disaster after 不然.
Key Takeaways
- 毕竟 = "after all" — introduces the overriding reason that should settle the matter.
- 反正 = "anyway / regardless" — dismisses the alternatives; carries a shrug of stubbornness or ease.
- 幸亏 = "luckily" — relief at a near-miss, usually paired with a 否则/不然 "otherwise" clause; 幸好 and 好在 are synonyms.
- The classic mix-up is 毕竟 (a decisive reason) vs 反正 (studied indifference) — keep the feelings apart.
- For the impatient "in the end / after all" of 到底, see 到底; for last-resort and decisive-choice adverbs, see 只好 / 干脆 / 尽量.

- 到底 (On Earth / After All)HSK 4 — 到底 (dàodǐ) presses a question for a definitive answer — 你到底去不去? 'are you going or not, come on?' — and in a statement means 'in the end / after all': 他到底成功了. In questions it pairs with a question word or A-not-A form, never with 吗.
- 只好 / 干脆 / 尽量 (Have No Choice / Just / As Much As Possible)HSK 4 — Three adverbs about how you handle a situation: 只好 (zhǐhǎo) 'have no choice but to' marks a reluctant last resort, 干脆 (gāncuì) 'just / might as well' marks a decisive cut through the fuss, and 尽量 (jǐnliàng) 'as much as possible' urges maximum effort within limits.
- 反正 — Anyway, In Any CaseHSK 4 — As a discourse marker, 反正 (fǎnzhèng) links clauses to say 'whatever the options just raised, this outcome holds regardless': 你说什么我都不信,反正我不去 'say what you like, I'm not going either way'. Note the 反正…就… frame and 反正…反正 chaining — and that English topic-switching 'anyway' is 那 or 总之, NOT 反正.
