Using 和 to Join Clauses (*我起床和吃饭)

In English, one little word — "and" — glues almost anything: two nouns (tea and coffee), two verbs (get up and eat), two whole clauses (I like China and I want to go). It is so versatile that learners reach for 和 (hé) to do the same universal job in Mandarin. But 和 is strictly a noun connector. Stretch it across verbs or clauses and it breaks — 我起床和吃早饭 and 我喜欢中国和想去 both land wrong on native ears. The fix is to learn which tool Mandarin uses for each of the jobs English lumps under "and."

和 joins nouns — and only nouns

和 links noun phrases into a single list: people, things, places. If both sides are nouns (or pronouns), 和 is exactly right.

我和你都喜欢喝咖啡。

wǒ hé nǐ dōu xǐhuan hē kāfēi

You and I both like coffee. (informal) — 和 links the two people.

桌子上有苹果、香蕉和橘子。

zhuōzi shang yǒu píngguǒ, xiāngjiāo hé júzi

On the table there are apples, bananas and oranges. (neutral) — a list of nouns, 和 before the last item.

我和我的同事一起去。

wǒ hé wǒ de tóngshì yìqǐ qù

My colleague and I are going together. (neutral) — two noun phrases joined by 和.

There is one honest nuance: 和 can join verb phrases when they act as nouns — as the subject or object of the sentence. In 抽烟和喝酒对身体不好 ("smoking and drinking are bad for you"), 抽烟 and 喝酒 are nominalized topics, not the live actions of the sentence. So the rule is really: 和 joins nominals. It never links the running actions of a sentence.

Actions in a row: stack them, or use 然后 / 再

Sequential actions don't get a single glue-word. Mandarin simply lines the verb phrases up — this is parataxis, clause after clause — often with a sequence adverb like 然后 (then) or 再 (then, next).

❌ 我起床和吃早饭。

Incorrect — 和 can't join two actions in sequence.

✅ 我起床,然后吃早饭。

wǒ qǐchuáng, ránhòu chī zǎofàn

I get up, then eat breakfast. — the actions simply stack, with 然后 marking the sequence.

下了课,我们先吃饭,再去看电影。

xià le kè, wǒmen xiān chī fàn, zài qù kàn diànyǐng

After class we'll eat first, then go see a movie. (informal) — 先…再… orders the actions; no 和 anywhere.

"Both … and …": 又 … 又 … , never 和

To stack two qualities or two ongoing behaviors of one subject, use the paired 又…又…, not 和.

❌ 他高和帅。

Incorrect — 和 can't join two adjectives.

✅ 他又高又帅。

tā yòu gāo yòu shuài

He's both tall and handsome. — 又…又… pairs the two qualities.

这家店的菜又好吃又便宜。

zhè jiā diàn de cài yòu hǎochī yòu piányi

This place's food is both tasty and cheap. (informal) — two qualities, one 又…又… frame.

Two things at once: 一边 … 一边 …

For two actions happening simultaneously, use 一边…一边….

他一边开车一边打电话。

tā yìbiān kāichē yìbiān dǎ diànhuà

He drives and talks on the phone at the same time. (neutral) — 一边…一边… marks simultaneity, not 和.

Joining whole clauses: 也 / 而且, never 和

To add a second thought about the same subject, use 也 (also) or 而且 (moreover). 和 cannot bind two clauses.

❌ 我喜欢中国和想去北京。

Incorrect — 和 can't join two clauses.

✅ 我喜欢中国,也想去北京。

wǒ xǐhuan Zhōngguó, yě xiǎng qù Běijīng

I like China, and I also want to go to Beijing. — 也 adds the second clause.

这个手机很好看,而且很便宜。

zhège shǒujī hěn hǎokàn, érqiě hěn piányi

This phone looks great, and it's cheap too. (informal) — 而且 links the two comments.

💡
Before you say 和, check both sides. Two nouns? 和 is right (你我). But a verb, an adjective, or a whole clause on either side? 和 is wrong — reach instead for a sequence word (然后 / 再), a pair (又…又… , 一边…一边…), or an additive (也 / 而且).

For 和 with nouns in full, see 和 for joining nouns; the "both…and…" pair lives at 又…又…; choosing among 和/跟/同/与 is at 和 vs 跟 vs 同 vs 与; and ordering actions at 先…然后…再. The mirror-image trap — keeping paired connectives whole — is at dropping half of 因为…所以.

Common Mistakes

1. verb 和 verb for a sequence.

❌ 我洗澡和睡觉。

Incorrect — two sequential actions can't be joined by 和.

✅ 我先洗澡,然后睡觉。

wǒ xiān xǐzǎo, ránhòu shuìjiào

I shower first, then go to sleep. — 先…然后… orders them.

2. clause 和 clause.

❌ 我很累和想休息。

Incorrect — 和 can't link two clauses.

✅ 我很累,想休息一下。

wǒ hěn lèi, xiǎng xiūxi yíxià

I'm tired and want to rest a bit. — just stack the clauses.

3. 和 for "both … and …" with adjectives.

❌ 这里的菜便宜和好吃。

Incorrect — use 又…又… to pair qualities.

✅ 这里的菜又便宜又好吃。

zhèlǐ de cài yòu piányi yòu hǎochī

The food here is both cheap and tasty.

4. 和 for English "and then" between events.

❌ 我们去了商店和买了很多东西。

Incorrect — two events in sequence just stack.

✅ 我们去了商店,买了很多东西。

wǒmen qù le shāngdiàn, mǎi le hěn duō dōngxi

We went to the store and bought a lot of stuff. — comma, no 和.

Key Takeaways

  • 和 joins nominals (你和我, 苹果和香蕉) — never the running verbs or clauses of a sentence.
  • Actions in a row stack (parataxis), often with 然后 / 先…再.
  • Paired qualities use 又…又… (又高又帅); simultaneous actions use 一边…一边….
  • Add a clause with 也 / 而且, not 和.
  • The English instinct that "and" glues everything is the whole source of the error — split it into the right Mandarin tool for each job.
